Real World Alaskan Camper Setup Hassles (see comments for fix)

  • ADD: I FOUND WHAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. The screws that set flush in the sliders that the camper rises up and down on had slightly back out due to off roading and older wood. If you keep all the screws installed tight it will go up and down smoothly. If the screws are slightly loose shove a toothpick in the screw hole with the screw or mix some wood & epoxy to fill hole with and reuse.
Normally a quick 5 minute job occasionally nothing seems to go right and the Alaskan Camper can be a huge PITA. I thought I had my truck level but it was not and that caused all this.

Thank you for showing the setup. It provided a true reality of potential challenges for setting up camp and for how things don't always go as planned.
The water loss from the e-bike hitting the switch was a big ouch😢
And your camper is nice for pushing 50 years old. I'm a few years older and wish I looked as good😁
The views are incredible. Thanks for including the trail map.
One of the items on my bucket list is to travel Alaska with a truck camper.
    Thank you.

I found out later it was the screws that hold the metal angle iron rails had backed out a tiny bit and would catch it as it lowers or raises. Easy fix as the holes had wallowed out over time

The beauty of the 8 foot camper is i can close my tailgate with it in there. Good door security.

Also, gives me a nice little porch when I'm camping 😊

Yes I would much prefer an 8ft for access to the rear bumper for accessories and the mini porch as you said. I have too much work invested in this one now to start over tho. One benefit of my 10' is the left side couch is 6' long so I can sleep on it when the top is down without having to put out the entire lower bed.

What is the height of the Alaskan with the top down from truck bed floor to top? I want to see if I can get it into a 10 ft shop ON THE truck. Truck bed is 36 inches off the ground. Thanks.

If you can weld,,you can build a carrier that uses your hitch and built with a hinge so you can literally swing the bike out away from the door.

Love the video. I have a question. Where did you get your front bumper and side bars or brush guard front bumper. I have been looking for something that heavy duty.
Thanks for all the videos you do. Very helpful

Buckstop bumpers, they have several different styles. Very well made, very heavy. Very expensive too but I'm positive it will save the truck from a deer strike.

It's when I like up 3 or 4 it makes it easier to roll up on them instead of popping out

Wow. My 2020 Alaskan set up is fast and easy - less than 2 min.

Mine usually is too, just this one time it was enough off level to cause problems. I normally get out my phone level and check before putting it up.

Turns out it was just a couple of screws in the slides that had slightly backed out and was causing it to hang up.

Yes if course. This time of year monsoon rains hit every afternoon about 4pm. Monsoon season almost over sadly, best time of year in AZ.
