    I'm currently building a '77 280z. Mild performance plans include a stage 1 cam grind, new down pipe and custom exhaust, and a R200 3.9 diff. Gorgeous car, I can't wait to see more!

    I.Got a 76z stock with 28k miles in delaware. I agree with everything youve said. Those cars have personalities all their own. At car shows people enjoy coming over to check her out. Young car guys weren't even born when my was built. Nice video, made me smile

    Now is a great time to buy a Z. Prices are going to go up and people are going to keep these cars for longer. It is happening in Japan already and will spread around the world.

      You nailed the timing, prices have gone through the roof lately. Just look at bringatrailer and search for Datsun. The 240s are bringing in big money.

    This is my dream project car. The lines and silhouette are fucking beautiful. I'd take one of these over a super car any day (just my preference, not cause I think they're superior spec wise or some shit)
    I appreciate the history of the car - that it was meant to provide a middle class sports car.
    Where I am it's hard to find one that's not rusted, modded to hell and tacky AF (if you can even find one).
    Beautiful car, man! Thanks for the vid

    Hey man welcome to the S30 club. Before you start with engine workings I'd recommend getting the creature comforts setup/improved. For example, you prob have exhaust fumes entering the cabin to at least a small degree. That is fixed by replacing/inspecting the rubber seal that lines the liftgate, the seals behind the taillights, as well as silicon gluing around that vinyl pad on the hatch (noone talks about that one for some reason but it has direct fume access). Also swapping out the door weatherstrips will improve wind noise and the fume issue too. Those are easily grab-able at the junkyard from a 93-01 Kia Sportage (no joke, they are 99% the same mold and you just have to cut a little bit off to fit it). The final thing I'd recommend assuming there aren't any electrical gremlins sneaking around is upgrading the cabin fan motor to the one from a Honda civic which apparently bolts right in but I havent tried that yet.

    • @fullyotto31
      @fullyotto31 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      chaseincats I've swapped all my rubber out and still get fumes from time to time. Pretty much something I have learned to live with.

    • @chaseincats
      @chaseincats 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm
      After you changed the hatch and taillight gaskets, did you check if the drain plugs at the base of your hatch & in the deck were dry rotted/cracked? Also, not 100% sealing that rectangular vinyl panel on the inside of the hatch is often times the issue as fumes sneak through the hatch's lock mechanism and enter the cabin through the vinyl piece.

      Most all the rubber on my 280 has rotted away do you know any other money saving tricks?

    • @chaseincats
      @chaseincats 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually yes. The door seal weatherstripping can be snatched out of a 94-2001 kia sportage . the right angle bend for the top of the door is already molded into the sportage rubber and fits on perfectly. once you have the whole thing on there will be about one foot of extra material on the bottom of the door so just use some scissors and cut it to fit. second tip (this is a no brainer tho) black silicone glue works wonders on sealing up old rubber glass seals so they dont leak. if you stumble on any others, plz let me know.

    Got a 260z that I am currently rebuilding. Going to run the stock L26 for a while to get a good feel for the car, and appreciate how it came. Later on I am going to buy an rb25det and swap that in it. I am planning on doing the front Toyota 4 piston caliper upgrade, and put 240sx rear calipers on it. Since I live in Denmark most people, that race cars are under 300hp, my Z is going to be a weapon with an rb25det in it. Well I guess even a L28 stroked to 3.0/3.1L with the diesel crank and triple webers, lightweight flywheel, exhaust and headers and so on, would be a weapon in Denmark :P

    I know I'm late too the party here, but...
    Putting in a larger master cylinder (7/8, or probably 1'' bore) will make the brake engagement more immediate, pedal firmer and braking more controllable at the limit. The new calipers he installed are a larger cylinder volume than the stockers which is the reason for your mushy pedal. I'd do this first before spending anymore money on your brakes, as you may find that other than the undersized master cylinder, your brakes are well sorted.
    Good luck!

    You're right when talking about the Z. Old cars have a certain charm and soul to them, which is why they're widely appreciated by both car enthusiasts and non-car enthusiasts alike. But it's not exactly easy to pick up or justify an old classic as your only car without breaking the bank. As a secondary car, with money to spend of course. Miata's are the cheapest platform for the "go-kart" feel you can get on the road, which is probably why they're the most heavily used car at AutoX events. Your argument is like saying, "why own a miata when you can own an s2000" or "why own an evo when you can own an r34 gtr?" Most people just don't have the money to pay for a premium, otherwise i'd be in an rx7 fd right now or an acura nsx if money weren't an issue

  • @ColdTouge
    @ColdTouge 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd absolutely love to have a Z, but where I live they're almost impossible to find. And if you do find one, they're either basically a shell, or extremely expensive. So I have a Miata lol

  • @tscooter22
    @tscooter22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice car! I used to own a 240z back when I was in college in the early 80s. Unfortunately, mine lived its life in the rust belt, so it had its fair share of rust going on. That said, it was still a great little car! That was the one car I've owned and looked back on years later thinking I'd love another one in excellent condition. About the same time I bought my brand new '94 RX7 (still own it today). Not long after taking delivery of my RX7, I learned about a refurbishing campaign where you could essentially buy a brand new/old 240z. It was so tempting, but the love for my FD won out. If the refurbs came out before I bought my RX7 I would have bought that instead.
    Oh, more importantly, thank you for helping out Rob Dahm with the driveshaft! That was very nice of you and a smart move at that, 'cause people like me will find your channel. I see great stuff here! Thumbs up and subscribed. -- Cheers from St. Louis, Missouri.

      The Dragon Reborn I feel you. That's the same situation in the Midwest. I'd be pumped to have any Datsun as a project, but specifically a 260 or 280.
      When I had family in Albuquerque and would visit, it was the first time I'd seen a bunch of them not rotted to shit. If you can find one where I am that's workable, they'll charge you quite an it for it.

    The Miata is different. In the way it's small. A, Z ,is larger roomier more of a real personal Sports Car. More Japanese Ferrari.
    The Miata is like a sophisticated grown up MGB
    Even though it was built as the people's lotus elan. Not many people in the states know what that is not have driven one.
    But really, you can only compare the Z to an entry level 911 of the same era.
    Both CAPABLE cars that keep you involved driving.. and smiling from everything a Sports Car , is supposed to be. A metal suit you put on and become part of, to Master the roads.

    CZeroMedia check out "Francisco Gutierrez" here on TH-cam. He is doing a great build.
    I just bought a 280Z. Tottaly rusted but I am rebuilding it from the ground up. I am going for TechToyTuning suspension parts, K-Tec coilovers, wilwood big breaks in the front and rear, ITBs, Megasquirt 3, CompCams Stage 4, DatsunSpirit super light and high compression pistons, DatsunSpirit connection rods, Quaife LSD.... well and a lot of other stuff as well obviously.
    You should check out hybridz.org! Lots of infos there and a lot of competent people willing to help. Nice community.
    Hope that helps a litlle! So happy you are about to build this awesome car!!

    These were the Miata of their day. Now they have cult status and fetch a good penny. Miatas will be the same way in another 10-15 years. Get a Miata now while they are cheap and plenty.

    you probably just have a bad brake master cylinder :) happens all the time on these cars, the land cruiser brakes should be really strong.

    • @datsoon9236
      @datsoon9236 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably right. Just bought a 1980 280zx for $600. It was sitting since 2008 and the brakes weren't functional. Replaced the master cylinder and bled the brakes for $40... one of the cheapest master cylinders I've ever seen. Brakes worked perfect after that.

    there is one at my local auction tomorrow, I want one so bad I just hope it works and doesn't sell for too much. My parents will only pay $500 :(
    what do you all think it will sell for, it has a slight dent in the front bumper but the rest of the body looks good, I will check it out before the auction to check it all out. it's black with bronze original rims :o

      Where are you from first, is it a 240z 260z 280z, in America the 240z is considered the collectors car. They sell for the most

    • @mellifluousangel4076
      @mellifluousangel4076 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      update: it sold for $350 and had 199k miles with rust on bottom of back bumper as well as on hood and trunk. it turned on with some trouble after about 10 tries. it also had some sort of leak (wet spot under car in the middle) manual transmission with teared seats and cracked dash. would that have been a good buy? maybe not to restore it but just to have fun with the car to learn stick shift. it had great tires and tags til next year!

    • @shawnhacker8874
      @shawnhacker8874 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AngelZee that would've been a great buy! To learn, have fun, and eventually restore it. Most rust on the rear bumpers aren't all the way through (from my experience) and would be a straight forward fix and not too costly. Even cheaper if you learned yourself. I picked up a 1974 260z in Minnesota with pretty minimal rust other then the door and rocker which I'm replacing and I got it as a rolling shell for $3100 so that would've been a steal!

    • @mellifluousangel4076
      @mellifluousangel4076 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shawn Hacker yeah but im not in a position to restore a car right now, i saw another 280z automatic sell for $450 at another auction in better shape (body) but it didnt turn on. one day ill get on at an auction.
      i also spoke to a 240z owner and he told me to stay away from 280z because i would have to smog it every 2 years so 240/260z are better because they arent fuel injected. so i still have more research to do

    I think that anyone "upgrading" the suspension should stick with rubber bushes. Polyurethane is too hard and harsh as you can see in this video. I've heard of suspension welds cracking due to there being no give in the ride. I think these macho hard suspensions are a bit of a joke, and do your kidneys a favor too...
