Part 1 of the Fresh Eyes challenge: • These 10 Shapes Unlock...
In this second tutorial in the Fresh Eyes challenge we are bringing back the 3rd dimension. Drawing with 3D forms is intimidating at first. In this video, I cover all the simple 3D form ideas we are going to learn in days 6-10 of the challenge. This is an overview, but when you do the challenge, we will learn these ideas slowly and step by step.
We look at the ribcage egg, the pelvis pants, the ball head and the simple approach to shoulders based on things we can actually see. We also look at dealing with foreshortened limbs using cross contour lines.
There’s a lot to cover in this video, but sign up to the challenge and work through all these skills slowly with us across days 6-10.
Shout out to my wife Lucy for the awesome stop motion animation of woody the awful mannequin!
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    0:48 Ribcage egg
    2:22 Pelvis pants
    3:54 Ribcage pelvis relationship
    4:19 Shoulders
    5:44 Quick Fresh Eyes explanation
    6:32 Twisting
    7:59 Foreshortened limbs
    9:59 Getting good at this
How the Fresh Eyes challenge works:
There are two tutorials here on TH-cam - this is part 2 and part 1 is linked above.
When you make an account with the link at the top, you can access the 2D model and play around with it, trying to match the poses. Each day, you get a new exercise plus 5 specially designed reference photos each day to practise with and drawing. There will be additional mini-tutorials in there to explain how to see the forms in the figure, as well as the side view of the figure, plus optional live sessions for further clarification.
Then on day 6 we start thinking about the ideas in this tutorial. We now switch to thinking in 3D. We will build on the ideas already developed but using simple 3D forms. Again on our website, there will be exercises each day on days 6-10, plus live sessions and extra explanations.
Sign up with the link above and learn to see the figure with Fresh Eyes!

I have ADHD and so it's often extremely difficult for me to follow lessons to completion, because I get lost easily. I also find that most teachers talk about the philosophy rather than giving practical explanations, so I completely lose interest and I get lost even more. Every time I come to your videos, I feel like the fog clears and I can completely follow your instruction from start to finish because you explain things so well and in interesting ways. Thank you so much!!! Your lessons have made my learning journey SO much less frustrating and it's actually helped me to start to enjoy practicing, now that I'm understanding things better and feeling less like a failure.

Oh my god same!! I’m a freshman majoring in animation and was dual diagnosed with adhd and ocd last year. Similar to you, I get overwhelmed quite easily and can get so caught up in the learning that it just confuses me. I’ve tried so many methods for figure drawing and anatomy, but nothing really stuck until I found this channel. Something about this exact technique is perfect for my attention level. I’ve never felt more excited to draw bodies haha

I really enjoy the humor you throw in here. Looks like some, like the mannequin animation, took a bit to set, but I think it helps what you are teaching stick in my mind. I need to really remember your comment about getting good at them simple things rather than rushing to having a collection of complex ideas that I can't attach to a good foundation.

    • @lovelifedrawing
      @lovelifedrawing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks! My wife Lucy animated the mannequin - she loves stop motion. Yeah i actually find it easier to learn more complicated stuff at a surface level than to learn basics at a deeper intuitive level. so it's really tempting to just add more complexity, but the thing that works is drilling fundamentals

And Fresh Eyes challenge is an apt platform to begin seeing the simple and essential in life drawing. Great video Kenzo. Congratulations for both the student who have made massive improvements and for you that taught him into the right direction.
What I find interesting about more spherical forms is that they generally make the figure more organic. And they are excellent for drawing faster.
And that customized form for the pelvis is very good and it's not that hard to use.
I've seen some great comic book artists like David Finch and John Buscema using that and they recommend it a lot in their videos and books (respectively).
Personally I like using other forms when drawing from imagination though.
I think boxy and cylindric forms works better when putting things in perspective, specially when doing more complex angles and such.
The thing about these forms is that the corners are much more clear than spheres, and as such, it's much easier to measure proportions and the perspectiva.
This is very handy when drawing things by your own imagination.
Plenty of animators use these forms in conjunction with triangular shapes and the peculiar "pillow shape" which teachers such as Kevin Chen and Ron Lemen use extensively.
Anyway, just telling my trashy personal opinion here lol.

    • @lovelifedrawing
      @lovelifedrawing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Totally agree Gabriel. So in our course, we emphasise a much more boxy approach for the torso forms. The truth lies somewhere in them middle of course

Also I would like to point out that the printable model of the day one in the community has the filename swapped between male and female. The hyperlink for male downloads a model with female filename, but the hips are from male. When you download female, you get a model with male filename, but the hips are from a female. (If I'm not wrong). I just wanted to point this out just in case someone does not spot the situation and maybe gets confused!

This has been extremely helpful to me. I'm dealing with cartoon characters for animation. As I'm sure you're aware, it's very important to have, at the very least, a rudimentary knowledge of how anatomy affects moment and body shape. Richard Williams (from Roger Rabbit fame) encourages animators to study life drawing. While my characters are very simple designs, basing their body movement on the "pelvis pants" and rig cage relationship helps them look more natural in their movement.

Any way this seem quite interesting again like the mini puzzle structure for the first one I think that the type of thing that could be quite interesting to just get the basic than you can go up in challenge but yah.
I don't actually know how to start a drawing without ref that why am trying to get better at understanding this because if I can understand how posse work may be I will be able to just do the pose than try to had to it after that.
Ref is always nice but it kinda get annoying whene you try to draw your Owen stuff but always need to start form ref always. like (it kinda make sense you need to start form some data it just that one is in your head and the other is outside of it but... still kinda annoying none the less whene you don't got the data to do it in your head and your just trying to do a simple thing.
SORRY FOR THE BAD ENGLISH Also am interested for the muscle and stuff too (like the belly parth it easy to get wrong for exemple like Just a curve in work but it look weird uncanny alot of time :) )

Will the challenge and it’s content still be available after the 10 days? I hope to revisit it next month or sometime after.

@@lovelifedrawing Thank you! I really want to participate in this course/challenge, but I'm in a bit of slump. I'm taking a bit of study a break.

How did you get that 3d figure at 0:05? Do you guys know if there's any good 3d models for looking at the muscles and bones?

For digital 3D models, Scott Breton's 3D models on sketchfab are free and excellent. The anatomy figure i was holding is one my mum bought online somewhere, i will check where
