Thanks, but I'm undeserving -- I missed a note in the middle! One of the many great things about that solo is that it is an adventure every time and defies a "note for note" mentality. You ideally have to feel it and let it mesh well with the background at the same time. I have played it much worse and much better than this performance at times. This one's ok but I do think about remaking this cover from time for time and shooting for one of those magic runs (which Lifeson was able to pull off every time he played it!).
Nice job on this great Rush song. I like many of the Rush singles from early 80`s to mid 80`s. This song is probably one of my favourites of theirs. Rush is extra special to me, as they are from my city of Toronto and grew up in my general neighbourhood area.
OMG!! Really great!!! I'm a singer from Italy, I'm editing a video for my vocal cover of this song. May I ask you to use your video for the guitar parts please? I will credit you of course!!!
You recorded this so many years ago and it's just fantastic. So cool that the band released the separate tracks for the vocals, etc. I just listen to your rig run down. All these years later, with your surely evolved rig, would you do any thing different with the blending of the magnetic and piezo patches nowadays? Or even with the amp?
Response to RushResist: Two outpus of guitar go into separate channels in Nuendo through a Fireface UFX. Mag pickups go through Amplitube, piezo goes through eq and compression. The alternating from clean to dirty channel is done using Nuendo automation. I would rather do the switching manually as it would make for smoother transitions, but I haven't yet come up with any way to trigger a change in the channel being monitored in Nuendo with midi (I don't think there is such an option).
I made the track I used from multi-track files. But your new best friend will be found when you google Guitar Backing Tracks. You will find a site with lots of good backtracks -- including one for Limelight which is from the original album and close to what I used.
I like it , I think the delay is fine especially considering how it is played live. What amp model are you using as a amp model ? Marshall 2203 ? Try a DSL next time your at GC , great tube combo amp
For this track, the amp model is an Orange amp that seems to have a better "classic rock" sound than the Marshall models in Amplitube. In real (non TH-cam) life, I have a Marshall TSL100 head and that is a sibling of the DSL line. I love the Marshall sound, always have.
Very cool , I have a DSL 40c. People who actually have the Orange amps love them. Are you using a Ipad also ? I have an I phone4 but amplitude seems difficult to navigate. I do have jamup by positive grid also.
Thanks! Yeah, there's always room to dig deeper into AL's playing and parts. For the backing tracks, type "Guitar Backing Tracks" into Google and one of the top hits will make you very happy. :-) Enjoy.
Hi -- unless your pedal board allows multiple inputs, you probably should just run out the "regular" jack. To get the Piezo alone, unfortunately, your only option there is to turn down the volume on the mag pickups completely. The "real" way to do this, as Alex does, is to send the mags to a normal rig, and Piezo to a mixing board or separate amp with a footswitch to turn it on or off. I even modded my AL to separate the mags and Piezo -- my regular jack is regular only.
Nice playing, man! Great technique - I've been playing Rush songs since the late 80's. That Big Al has very curuis stuff, right? Lol - I have a Les Paul axcess too! Plays like a dream! Where can I get those cool guitar backing tracks? Cheers and rock on!
Very but very good job Big D. I have been watching your videos lately and what a wonderful and enigmatic player you are, but with all due respect, and after being a Lifeson fan for more than 30 years, I strongly believe that if you just added some emotion and deep deep feeling to your performance you could reach a closer sound to the original soundtracks or even the live ones, specially on the solos, that, IMHO must be polished a little bit more in order to achieve that GOAL, TO PLAY K. LERXST
how did you get all that description? is it included with being licensed? and if so i've been trying to do so, i just uploaded something and i selected creative commons attributed, what next ?
Very nice playing, well done! Did you make or acquire the backing track? I've been trying to find a good one but all I can find are of questionable quality.
Fair enough, but have you heard how much delay AL uses live on this tune these days? The studio track is fairly dry, but I actually kicked in a second delay during the solo to go for that live sound. I love the sound of the delayed notes during those trem dives. The studio solo is awesome too though.
Look- Al states that live he uses two delays. One is set 420 and the other at 680 to get “cascading and notes bending and tripping over each other.” There is not too much delay. Maybe the ambiance of the solo section isn’t perfect but he got most of the stops and turns right and he finished in the pocket on the out-tro which is bloody hard to go from 3/4 cut time to 4/4 straight. Like your the way you made it your version of this solo.
the piezo sounds very cool
One of the best if not THE BEST limelight solo!!!

Nope -- this is the PC version. I have the ipad version but PC version is still superior.
That is truly an awesome solo, nearly perfect but then again who is?,,Awesome job brother, awesome!
That Piezo desn't sound bad.

damn that is a sexy guitar! Very nice playing too.
hi, are you using a backing track or the original music?
+dorpho55 I am using a backing track OF the original music. It is the studio track without Alex's guitar.
Nice playing, man! Great technique - I've been playing Rush songs since the late 80's. That Big Al has very curuis stuff, right? Lol - I have a Les Paul axcess too! Plays like a dream! Where can I get those cool guitar backing tracks? Cheers and rock on!
what equipment do you use!!! and how do you switch frm the distortion to the piezo?

Where did you get this audio track from? I would love to get a copy of it so I too can do a cover.
got a little behind at one point in the Goat solo... excellent otherwise :)
Less delay dude!!!

+Luciano Soares I think its more of a reverb, No? But you're right, LESS OF IT!!

dude lifeson uses the same amount come on you are probably the only one who hit a thumbs down as well !!!
