    Hi Tim. One consistent thing I’ve noticed about people who make games, is that they totally discount the impact their games can have on people. Yes, you made computers go “beep”, “boop”. Yes, you didn’t do open-heart surgery. However, games often help people escape terrible circumstances, or keep depression or anxiety at bay. For some, like me, they help my brain process things on a background thread while I play. I’m just glad you and many others made computers go “beep”, “boop”.

      art is much more valuable than open-heart surgery
      most games don't have redemptive artistic/literary value, but Fallout does
      emotional+spiritual contributions vs. 'this person was negligent to their health and had to burden thousands of other people because they couldn't eat good food or exercise regularly'

    I remember Tim carrying that book around everywhere during Indiana! Tim definitely writes down everything. I had done things that were either wrong or thoughtless and Tim would have a record of them and correct me, thankfully he did so with kindness and grace.
    I also feel guilty for being the one of many at Obsidian that was constantly pestering Tim to be a Lead again. I was (and still am) a fan boy and that was my excuse - I wanted another Tim Cain game.
    Not that I think anyone can make Tim be a Lead if he doesn't want to be a Lead.

    • @CainOnGames
      @CainOnGames  ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Once you mentioned Firefly, I was hooked and fated to become a lead, Anthony. And I don’t remember you doing anything thoughtless, except maybe revealing a book or movie spoiler here and there.

    You didn't just make computers go "beep boop" Tim. You ARE a hero and you DID save the world. You saved people from boredom. You provided people with games they could enjoy when they felt like shit. You worked on games many people will remember playing for the rest of their lives just as I remember how playing Minecraft was the only fun part of my childhood. You're not worse than a doctor or a scientist. You created things with true intentions and were led not by greed but by the pure will to materialise whatever you've always carried inside your mind and to perfect your craft.
    There aren't a lot of people like you in this world and you should give yourself more credit and know that I really believe everything I just wrote

  • @md0015
    @md0015 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    You didn't "save the world," but your work certainly has affected people on that level, relatively speaking. You probably know that already, but I think it is worth saying. You've created systems, and worlds, and characters with which people connected. They made people happy and feel accomplished and feel safe and all sorts of things. What makes me sad (not really...but you know what I mean) is that there is no direct way for me to tell all the people who made Baldur's Gate 1 how much every part of the game is embedded in my being. Xzar became my friend. Greywolf that early accomplishment and being rewarded with the Long Sword +2. Purposely leaving Imoen in Gnoll Stronghold only to feel bad about it after playing Baldur's Gate 2 so that I never did it again. I learned big words as a kid so I could understand Edwin. Etc. The game didn't save my life, sure, but it certainly is a part of me, just like any person who played a huge role in my life up to this point. So thank you for everything you have done with Fallout. Although I never played the first one, New Vegas is one of my favorite games of all time, and without you, that game wouldn't have been all things great games are to people. And thank you for continuing to make these videos; they are infinitely fascinating.

    I kept a very detailed journal starting in 2019. Lost my job, divorced, COVID, all the things happened from then until now. I even spent five years in an apartment I hated. Then I moved, COVID ended, and my ex and I are pals now. I realized when I was unpacking that I had lost my journal, and I REALLY wish I could write a single additional sentence “Everything was fine after all.”

      Tim Cain's work on Fallout is up there with Gollop & Gollop's X-COM, Sid Meier's Civilization, id's Quake II, MechWarrior 2, Oleg Maddox's IL-2 Sturmovik... if you were to relate this to say, music - you were one of the very influential artists that made the beeps & boops that entertained, inspired, and touched the imagination of millions of people. Growing up in the 90s, this is how a lot of people actually got into computing as a career and like I said earlier, changed people's lives in a similar way that Hendrix, Iommi, Dylan inspired people.
      Especially now that with better technology doesn't necessarily mean better games (either gameplay, story-wise, &c...) - I remember being 10 or 11 years old and playing Fallout and then FO2. Very big titles for me and no doubt, many others.

    It's funny to think you were making your own engines in C multiple times, back in the 90's, like Fallout's, Arcanum's and Temple of Elementar Evil (?), and then later you would go on and join Obisidian as a programmer and work in Unity with C# (lol!) on Pillars, with all those years of experience, I wonder how that felt. And then later you would still go and work in Tim Sweeney's engine for Outer Worlds. You pretty much did it all! hahaha I wonder what are your opinions on the engines and how did you felt working on the different techs. Like, what was more fun to do, etc.

    I've been trying to jot down notes in various forms, physical pen & paper, digital in different apps, and I always end up in two major bummers regarding note-taking. Either I completely forget that I have notes about X somewhere, and the second thing is that even if I find the notes later, I don't recognise them (did I really write this? what was I thinking?) or straight up hate them. This is usually related to ideas and thoughts about game design. I've stopped taking any notes for a couple years already because I don't know how to deal with them and I can't seem to get anything out of taking notes.

    How about, each attribute starts as a triangle allowing the player to pick 3 skills to be proficient. Then, if the player increases that attribute, it becomes a square allowing another skill, then a pentagon, etc. Until, the character is a master in that attribute and it becomes a circle and they can use all skills but the character is only allowed so many of each shape, of course.
    Also, I think it's a little unfair to say you haven't saved lives with how inspiring your games and career have been.
