it's not all about beans. the metaphor has two things: bean and bean stalk. bean stalk was mainly used as a heating agency during that time. bean and bean stalk are born from a same root (Cao zhi and Cao pi), but bean stalk can burn beans (Cao Pi wants to kill Cao Zhi). it's a fairly accurate metaphor. because he has to persuade Cao Pi not to kill him.
Kind of disapointing they made Cao Zhi so unlikable it didn't really make me care about him when he made the poem, it was suppose to be quite a brother's fight but Cao Pi feels fully justified here
Sima Yi learned a lot from Cao Cao. I would go on to even say that Sima Yi is the true spiritual successor of Cao Cao. Both are highly talented both are impeccable smart and both are willing to go the extra mile
Ironically Cao Zhi's Poem ended up being a Prophecy of sorts as the Sima Clan in the Anarchy of the 8 Princes would eat each other in their feuds to control the Mentally Challenged/ill Emperor, and thus the Beans and the Bean Stalks formulated their own demise at the hands of the very Nomads they invited to Destroy each other in such fury.
I didn't notice the first time. There was this really interesting scene from the 2010 film where Sima Yi first introduced to Cao Cao sons. He noticed the poet and the youngest child show exceptional intelligence. Cao Pi was not. Sima Yi groom Cao Pi. His first target was Cao Cao favorite. Cao Chong is best known for his ingenious method of weighing an elephant using the principle of buoyancy. He was considered by his father as a possible successor but died prematurely at the age of 12. Since Cao Chong bio doesn't explain how he got the illness, the TV show filled the story where Cao Pi poison his little brother to death. His next target is Cao Zhi. Cao Zhi was so smart, he saved himself by taking on a game of death challenge by creating 7 brotherly poem without using the word brother in it. Once Sima Yi found out Cao Pi has a rare disease that would killed his host at certain age. It was an eureka moment! I bet Cao Pi was poisoned. Same for Cao Rui since they both trust Sima Yi. When Cao Cao was still alive, he explicitly advice Cao Pi not to trust Sima Yi, you can use him but don't trust him. Cao Pi probably didn't understand it. This allows Sima Yi to outlived most of Cao Wei emperors. 😋
I am not a Chinese chauvinist but as an avid military history fan, this segment illustrates how civilised the Chinese were back then. Even if suspected for committing a serious treason, you could be forgiven if you displayed phenomenal talent.
True. Dedication is necessary but you also need genius to create greatness. A genius that works hard is going to beat a less smart but equally hardworking person.@@redsol3629
Cao Pi was going to go through the process anyway. There were theories on the reason for Pi wanting to kill Zhi which one is his jealousy of Zhi literacy skills overshadows his. In romance, he killed Cao Chong because he wants to be the heir. Cao Zhang was forced to retire while historically, Zhang died with an illness with a theory that Pi killed him with poison just to make it 'look' natural without any suspicion from Lady Bian(Cao Pi mother) since Cao Zhang was the favorite son.
Well cao zhi didn't attend cao cao's funeral. There's no way he can let that slide thats a sign of utter contempt over the situation. Cao zhi needed to be put in place to display his power. Publicy shaming Zhi with the test not only highlights his skill but his punishment through demotion also shows all his supporters that supporting him would be a lost cause and who's really running things. His brother's had to be gotten they both wanted his power. Cao zhang in the series at least tried to take over the capital and seize power coupled with Zhi's disobedience...yeah fuck that.
Stupid liguangyao don't understand real China and human history, such as he think Chinese can't invention, kinding me. paper and gunpowder is China invention. our ancestor link the philosophy in our language.

Such good acting on the Seven Steps Verse!
Almost cried...
Superb.
This is one of the aspect that make this better than the classic Three Kingdoms.

@@sephelutis Cao Zhi was spoiled, but that shouldn't make it a capital offense.
I'm rewatching it again after, like years, and this poem is still hitting me right in the feels. Excellent.
nobody cares

It never stops lol. That scene was flawless.
When Sima Yi is at his most merciless, he has that thousand yard stare.

If I recall correctly he is known to have a menacing wolf stare

Basically, Cao Zhi freestyle rap.

Except this is the romance version. There is no historical evidence that this actually happened between the two brothers.
my guy treating Troy starring Brad Pitt like it's a contemporary documentary

How so?
Cao pi acting is good here.
I cried
I wonder if Cao Zhi did not have the poetry talent would Cao Pi still kill him? It shows that talent creates miracles.
正因为曹植的才能在曹丕之上,曹丕才要杀了曹植
Talent is a word lazy people use to explain dedication.

Lol Cao Pi really did what Hua Xin told him to ?🤦 How spineless could a ruler get?
