I hate people who see great guitarists and give up on themselves, those guitarists that make them give up on themselves were in the same position but made a different decision
Amnesty Hop Hop yeah I hate people with insecurities and potential mental issues they deal with too. Just BE MORE CONFIDENT ya know? Like what idiots. Gosh. Can’t believe them feeling like that when seeing a goal most people can’t attain. (this was sarcasm by the way) Granted this video isn’t super impressive either way. John is WAYYYY better than this now.
When I watch it I get discouraged but then when I continue my day and pick up the guitar I think about it and get motivated to learn...so it’s actually both for me
My 7 year old daughter was eating dinner and within the opening seconds of this tune she was bopping along with it. After about 15 seconds she came over to the screen and asked "who is that?" She never does that
It also helps when you study Jazz Guitar at Berkeley. But the man breathes guitar, regardless of his education. Every new album is a completely new journey into the world of music. It's never the same sound. He's the genius of our generation.
It was only a couple of semesters lol, and he's not a diligent student either. Well, to have your teacher call you a "phenomenal player" when you're exiting is quite something.
I love how you can get lost in playing music...even if your playing just straight chords....its an indescribable feeling that I think only musicians will understand. Mmmm I love those moments.
SRV and other blues musicians were his influences before he even got famous. He never switched. His first few albums were just to get his name out there. Now, he is doing what he really wanted to do.
This is unbelievable. I literally _scream_ out loud at certain places in this jam. And that tone.. absolutely killer. John, you're the man. And Steve Jordan, huh ;) wow
You have to understand that what Mayer is doing is genious in his career. He has already learned restraint, something that guys like Clapton didn't learn til later. That's exactly why you want more of it(and why you'll coming back). Mayer's strength is his songwriting. That's why guys like Bonamassa, while phenomenal, won't break out of guitar player circles. If Mayer gave ya the whole shabang all the time, you wouldn't have this need for more.
Incredible. I've listened to this over and over. I'm finding that I like his impromptu playing and his jam sessions as much as I like his actually songs. :-)
John was playing blues/heavier stuff before his Sensitive pop stuff. Check out his work with his High School band Villanova Junction. I, for one, am Glad he has decided to take his music in this direction. I think he did what he had to do to sell records and get out there. If someone told me all I had to do was put out two polka albums to release a lifetime of music I was really into, best believe I'd start writing polka songs
Yeah its new, my flipping science teacher took ten minutes of the class to talk about how he's a 'bad influence'. She thought he had a snake wrapped around his arm, talk about being embarrassed. Never talk about JM in class to me, I started dancing around to the music in my head. =]
From Wikipedia - "Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock and pop, BUT GRADUALLY BEGAN A TRANSITION TOWARDS THE BLUES GENRE IN 2005 by collaborating with renowned blues artists such as B. B. King and Eric Clapton, and by forming the John Mayer Trio. The blues influence can be heard on his album Continuum, released in September 2006... Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change".
I haven't exactly placed my finger on it quite yet, but the tone didn't quite come out so awesome on the album as it did here, like I can still listen to this on repeat all day it's just so raw, and on the album it's just so soft and it just does nothing to me, the live version is awesome though !
Amazing solo, and I agree... This version really is pure Mayer, for obivious reasons. Pretty cool thing to hear for the first time on ones birthday no? Thanks!
Britney.... gimme a break!! The song also inspired the 1986 movie called after the song where Ralph "Lightning Boy" Macchio (aka Karate Kid) searches for Robert Johnson's lost song. Also featuring Steve Vai. Great movie. Great song. Nice version John!
Crosswords is a tune that has been composed by Robert Johnson, a bluesman that lived in the 30's. Clapton made a famous version of it in the 60's, when he played with the Cream.
@A7X514 I know John is using a NG2 for Crossroads, but when I listen the sound demo's on Pete Cornish' website, then I hear a completely different tone. More like heavy metal. Does John just have set the NG2 on other settings, or a load of other things on why the sound is so different? I'm just wondering because Crossroads is one of my favorite songs, especially when he plays it live.
The fuzz pedal he typically used for this song on tour is the Pete Cornish NG-2 Fuzz. I assume that's what he's using, but obviously don't know for sure.
I just thumbed up your comment. By far the best and closest to what I was going to say. I can listen to every song on Continum. I don't skip anything. He said on the Mayercraft he was going to make the best F***ING record be to me he already has. All his music is great!
To be honest, it sounds like it would be just the Blues Junior. I dont hear too much Two-Rock tone in this, just a cranked Blues Junior probably overdriven by a Tubescreamer of some sort, probably a TS-808. Hope this helps!
Thats definitely becomes the "Heartbreak Warfare" Strat later. Its got the metal nut on before the headstock and its the same color. All it's missing is the Heartbreak Warfare logo that probably hasnt even been thought of in this video yet!
OMG I LOVE YOU!!!! you are a genius as a person and a songwriter! LOVE YOU!! too bad i misssed u when u came to hk :( hopeful i can catch u in toronto. :D
people saying that the blues stuff is new to him you're wrong. already in his first album you can hear some blues licks in city love and neon. from city love you got covered in rain and i swear there are licks from bold as love. and the first strat i ever saw him using was an srv strat with a pickguard swap
I didn't mean that he lifted the riff verbatim, but it was definitely there in the mix. That can't be denied. But, so what: everything he plays has a basis in music history (like most musicians of that genera). He's not like Hendrix who took the blues and blasted it into outer space, but what makes him unique is his particular personal approach to the music he plays, which I happen to like. He is like the son of a genesis who is always been measured against his father's success.
Yeah you're right. I think one of the big differences is for the album tone it seems like he didn't use any reverb or slight delay. The tone kinda lacks depth compared to this one. This one rocks. You can hear the "room".
Tat goes all the way up folks, it's a complete sleeve. He had it done recently when he was in Japan... by a Japanese artist... it's quite intricate. Pics on the net. Can't wait for the tour!!!
if u really pay attention to the video, you will notice that one has 22 frets and a truss rod adjustment on the headstock. Not a JM model at all. Also seems to have something different going on at the nut, maybe a roller nut...If I had to bet in anything, I'd say it's a Jeff Beck Model.
anyone remember the video game Moon Patrol? For some reason 0:48-:1:00 reminds me of the music in that game! Mr. Mayer you're a ridiculous talent...what else can be said. That looks like it must've been a lot of fun. Oh what I would give to be ablet o hang out in a place like that.
thats why i also thought it was a 50, seeing how he can afford the more limited 50s and i've only ever seen john with mostly rosewood. well i guess you've proved me wrong with most of the videos except the crossroads 2004 one. his actually using an srv signature but he just swapped out the pickguard and changed it to chrome hardware. you can tell by the headstock coz u can srvs sig and its a much darker tint than mayers sig and theres also a leftie trem.
Oh cool, thanks for telling me about the SRV sig, I know that it was his first proper guitar but had no idea that that was it, I just assumed it was John's sig!
This can either excite you as a guitar player to learn and practice even more, or completely dash your hopes.
(this was sarcasm by the way)
Granted this video isn’t super impressive either way. John is WAYYYY better than this now.
It has nothing to do with confidence, it’s commitment and perseverance
When I watch it I get discouraged but then when I continue my day and pick up the guitar I think about it and get motivated to learn...so it’s actually both for me
Dude this inspired me Becuase I have so many ideas of what I could play around this. It’s just my hands that get stuck easily
My 7 year old daughter was eating dinner and within the opening seconds of this tune she was bopping along with it. After about 15 seconds she came over to the screen and asked "who is that?" She never does that
*and so another guitar player is born*
she's got the blues
Good taste runs in the family
It also helps when you study Jazz Guitar at Berkeley. But the man breathes guitar, regardless of his education. Every new album is a completely new journey into the world of music. It's never the same sound. He's the genius of our generation.
He was at Berklee for less than a year.
It was only a couple of semesters lol, and he's not a diligent student either. Well, to have your teacher call you a "phenomenal player" when you're exiting is quite something.
I mean I wouldn’t describe a 1-4-5 as jazz , that’s a blues progression. Mayer barely went to Berkeley and he certainly didn’t go there to study jazz
I love how you can get lost in playing music...even if your playing just straight chords....its an indescribable feeling that I think only musicians will understand. Mmmm I love those moments.
Gaah i love when the drum change at 1:25 ..ladies and gentlemen, thats Steve Jordan for you!
I never get tired of this clip!
haha I thought the same exact thing as you.
Those aren't real drums I think
how could you say that lol @@yodaburek
2:03. Hell... Why do I play guitar?
Logan Dorio To git gud.
That lick is dirty as fuck haha
Mayer is master at his craft..sad to see he still doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. One of my favorites
SRV and other blues musicians were his influences before he even got famous. He never switched. His first few albums were just to get his name out there. Now, he is doing what he really wanted to do.
His phrasing here is just incredible
One of the best clips of all time. 1:51 to the end on loop! Just perfect.
This is unbelievable. I literally _scream_ out loud at certain places in this jam. And that tone.. absolutely killer.
John, you're the man. And Steve Jordan, huh ;)
wow
The high note at 2:01 blew my mind!
If Mayer gave ya the whole shabang all the time, you wouldn't have this need for more.
thats amazing. awesome rhythm/solo-combination... especially the last 30 seconds are a treat.
I cant stop watching this...just amazing!
Incredible. I've listened to this over and over. I'm finding that I like his impromptu playing and his jam sessions as much as I like his actually songs. :-)
saw this three years ago and am still in awe of the mans groove!!
Mr. Mayer you got some 1980s Japanese punk hair going on in the video and I dig it like that funky groove you showing us before it dropped.
John was playing blues/heavier stuff before his Sensitive pop stuff. Check out his work with his High School band Villanova Junction. I, for one, am Glad he has decided to take his music in this direction. I think he did what he had to do to sell records and get out there. If someone told me all I had to do was put out two polka albums to release a lifetime of music I was really into, best believe I'd start writing polka songs
cant wait to hear a finished version of that! lovin it.
that quick little lick he does at the very end is so awesome.
Yeah its new, my flipping science teacher took ten minutes of the class to talk about how he's a 'bad influence'. She thought he had a snake wrapped around his arm, talk about being embarrassed. Never talk about JM in class to me, I started dancing around to the music in my head. =]
Sounds like variations of riffs from the live version of Clapton playing Crossroads. Gotta love a classic riff played by JM.
TOTALLY AGREE... When he slides up to like the 22nd fret on the end of the 3rd phrase... GOD DAMN!
Haven't had that lump in my throat for a while. Always givin doses of that good shit. Work it out work it out J!
From Wikipedia - "Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock and pop, BUT GRADUALLY BEGAN A TRANSITION TOWARDS THE BLUES GENRE IN 2005 by collaborating with renowned blues artists such as B. Whoa, Johnny. This is awesome. Can't stop movin' to this. Gimme Mo!
I haven't exactly placed my finger on it quite yet, but the tone didn't quite come out so awesome on the album as it did here, like I can still listen to this on repeat all day it's just so raw, and on the album it's just so soft and it just does nothing to me, the live version is awesome though !
Even though we can’t see him Steve Jordan is unmistakable
Amazing solo, and I agree... This version really is pure Mayer, for obivious reasons.
Pretty cool thing to hear for the first time on ones birthday no?
Thanks!
The worst part about it is that he makes it look so damn easy. Man Steve Jordan's drumming on this track is sick as well though.
Britney.... gimme a break!! The song also inspired the 1986 movie called after the song where Ralph "Lightning Boy" Macchio (aka Karate Kid) searches for Robert Johnson's lost song. Also featuring Steve Vai. Great movie. Great song.
Nice version John!
I love this jam! It's very refreshing to hear
Crosswords is a tune that has been composed by Robert Johnson, a bluesman that lived in the 30's. Clapton made a famous version of it in the 60's, when he played with the Cream.
You look so happy when you're playing.
Oh and the new haircut is boss
i think the final outcome of crossroads on the album is awesome! great job
lovin those steve jordan beats
This sounds so freaking thick!
I'm really surprised this jam isn't as popular as the two rock slow dancing demo
...WOW...
@1:28, when the beat changes...the guy is just sick wit the guitar!
The fuzz pedal he typically used for this song on tour is the Pete Cornish NG-2 Fuzz. I assume that's what he's using, but obviously don't know for sure.
John! You were amazing in Copenhagen last night!!!!
What a great guitar sound in the comp. Sound quite Beckish
this is badass man love it
love that slide at 2:03 freaking awsome
I just thumbed up your comment. By far the best and closest to what I was going to say. I can listen to every song on Continum. I don't skip anything. He said on the Mayercraft he was going to make the best F***ING record be to me he already has. All his music is great!
Thanks again John....loved it!
gah, this just reminds me why i'm constantly amazed with his talent.
Man your sooooo innovative with those pentatonics!!! you've been a big influence thanks!
Sweet. About a minute in I start to get reeaaaaaal happy.
the epitome of tonal perfection.... ahhhhhhh i neeeeeeed the tonnnnnneeeeee!
john mayer, you are fantastic.
ahh so this is the guitar that will/has become known as heartbreak warfare guitar! nice!
fantastic point
You are so amazing!!!!!!!!
To be honest, it sounds like it would be just the Blues Junior. I dont hear too much Two-Rock tone in this, just a cranked Blues Junior probably overdriven by a Tubescreamer of some sort, probably a TS-808. Hope this helps!
looks like the 62' hot rod strat... i want it so bad it has like a heavy but pure tone which is cool
Take Your Fans To Work Day?! lmao! awesome idea!
Thank you friend. Sounds amazing!
agreed, the John Mayer Trio is his best venture yet.
that technic took me a while to learn. very useful i think.
That sounds Amazing
people saying that the blues stuff is new to him you're wrong. already in his first album you can hear some blues licks in city love and neon. from city love you got covered in rain and i swear there are licks from bold as love. and the first strat i ever saw him using was an srv strat with a pickguard swap

That last lick is crazy
Better be a Day 2!!!! AMAZING!!!
Oh man that's one tasty groove.
wow this is mindblowing amazing!!!

Yeah throw the cash and chicks on this guy, approved.
great job!
Sounds damn good sir...
That Jeff Beck Strat is sweet doesn’t have the Black Heart sticker yet..
the tastiest of all solos with taste
That's pretty darn amazing.
Oh- and nice haircut! :-)
Man, that song has come long way.
Tat goes all the way up folks, it's a complete sleeve. He had it done recently when he was in Japan... by a Japanese artist... it's quite intricate. Pics on the net.
Can't wait for the tour!!!
Got one man!!! And just got a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue! I'm just about as close as I can get ;)
this just made my week...
Well said. Restraint separates the men from the boys!
i love this man.
'which you might remember served as the inspiration for a Britney Spears movie,'. That had me cracking up with laughter.
if u really pay attention to the video, you will notice that one has 22 frets and a truss rod adjustment on the headstock. Not a JM model at all. Also seems to have something different going on at the nut, maybe a roller nut...If I had to bet in anything, I'd say it's a Jeff Beck Model.
Sick!
So legendary
anyone remember the video game Moon Patrol? For some reason 0:48-:1:00 reminds me of the music in that game!
Mr. Mayer you're a ridiculous talent...what else can be said. That looks like it must've been a lot of fun. Oh what I would give to be ablet o hang out in a place like that.
That is one KICK ass sound.
Damn I love take your fans to work day.
thats why i also thought it was a 50, seeing how he can afford the more limited 50s and i've only ever seen john with mostly rosewood. well i guess you've proved me wrong with most of the videos except the crossroads 2004 one. his actually using an srv signature but he just swapped out the pickguard and changed it to chrome hardware. you can tell by the headstock coz u can srvs sig and its a much darker tint than mayers sig and theres also a leftie trem.
This will be a great track on "Battle Studies". Excited
hey man youre an amazyng musician, god bless you!!
yeeaaahhh!!work it John ;)
i can't stop refreshing this page, holy wow.. i want to learn this, but it will take me 345 years ... lol
You are the best..
Hella sick!
This is so good but it's prolly just a warm up to him. What a fucking beast !!!!
Oh cool, thanks for telling me about the SRV sig, I know that it was his first proper guitar but had no idea that that was it, I just assumed it was John's sig!
