Greece unveils new Leopard 1HEL Main Battle Tank with European collaboration

On April 22, 2024, EODH, in partnership with Belgian-Spanish DUMA and German KNDS (formerly Krauss-Maffei Wegmann), unveiled the Leopard 1HEL, an upgraded iteration of the Leopard 1A5 main battle tank boasting a modular enhancement package. This upgrade aims to modernize the aging German main battle tank and has been presented as an option for the Greek Army, the largest user of this tank type worldwide.

I pritty much liked the idea of the Leo 1 with an modular Cockerill 3105 Turret. I often wonder why they dident use the Leopard 1s Chassis for an cheap & easyer to maintain second line Tank.

Why don't the make a smoothbore 105 mm with auto loader...

Because developing a new smoothbore 105mm gun would be incredibly wasteful. The whole point of keeping the gun is to use the massive stocks of rifled 105mm ammo that Greece maintains, replacing it with a gun that can’t use it would defeat the point.

Except A) its not designed to do so. The LEO 1 was designed to be lightly armored and
B) Greece has nothing to do with the project except of course being a potential client
