  • A 23-year-old South African beauty queen, Chidimma Vannesa Onwe Adetshina, has faced backlash after making it to the top 16 at the ongoing Miss South Africa (Miss SA) pageant. Born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and South African mother, Adetshina has been targeted by some South Africans who claim she is not South African by birth.
According to a South African Vlogger, some South Africans are unpleased that Adetshina made the top 16 in the pageant, adding that Nigerians in South Africa are known to engage in questionable jobs. Responding to the trolls, the beauty queen said in various interviews that she is a South African and qualified to compete at the pageant.
“I am a South African citizen and I have met all the requirements to be a part of the Miss SA competition. The fact that my father is Nigerian does not take away from the fact that I am South African. My mother is South African, and I was born and raised in this country,” she said. Also clearing the air on the issue, the Miss SA organisation, in a statement confirmed that Adetshina met all the requirements to participate in the pageant.

You have valid points but you seem to not be addressing the elephant in the room. No one is disputing if she is legally South African or not. Concerns raised are as follows:
    1. Both her parents are not South Africans
    2. Not once before has she displayed pride in being a South African rather she waves a Nigerian and Mozambique flag in her socials
    3. She is black yet for over 2 decades, she cannot speak any black South African language out of 11 this simply means that she does not connect with those of the same skin colour as hers from a country she claims to be part of.
    4. South Africa is broken down and represented by the following identities (Basotho, Batswana, Mapedi, Maxhosa, Mazulu, VhaVenda, BaTsonga, BaSwati, MaNdebele, Coloureds, Indians and Whites) Out of that list which one does she embody since she wants to represent this country? You cannot tell me that you do not associate yourself with any of the above and yet want to individually represent the entire nation...... That is complete ignorance and no country would allow that, South Africa should stop being used as a testing field.
    5. When asked in the pergeant what does she identify as, what will she say? Saying South African is not enough.
    6. When asked about the traditions and South African customs, what will she say because not knowing a single South African indigenous language as a black person i a clear display that you dont associate with those people of that country.
This is not xenophobia, its just clear facts. Who in their right mind would want to represent an entire nation of which you do not identify with, dont speak their language or practice any of their traditions?
I guarantee you, she identifies as Igbo

    • @ay1ism
      @ay1ism หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Identifies as Igbo makes me laugh. Although, Chidinma is an Igbo name so I, myself, got confused. Her surname is a Yoruba one, meaning her dad must be a Yoruba man. And it is said in this video that her mum is from Mozambique. Now to your points, I agree with you completely if she hasn't shown any sign of assimilation over these years then she's not representing. She might fit into the 'Coloured' Identity though. Her parents background shouldn't matter if she holds South african passport. She is an independent adult now.

South Africa chose specific cultures to make up their "rainbow" in 1994. Those are SePedi, Setswana, isiZulu, isiXhosa, isiNdebele, Xitsonga, TshiVenda and isiSwati and Sesotho. Some of these cultures are derived from other countries Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland. They lawfully decided the culture that makes up black rainbow nation. We just want someone to represent who is consistent with the brand that was chosen. Otherwise it seems we don't value our own law. In time African Union needs to make more inclusive changes. But follow laws. Respect each other's laws. Also, remember, the pageant wanted people to vote, so people have power to decide who is eligible in their debate as the voting masses. No one disputes she's beautiful, that she's African and even South African. We're worried about practically applying this representation on global stages. We wouldn't want her to seem unembracing of her Nigerian or Mozambican roots. We are taking the organization to task for their decisions as voters. There's no Xenophobia in her case. No one wants her dead. This is a very political role and we want to be deliberate as South Africans regarding this. In future, let's engage one another. Ask South Africans and hear them out. Let's also learn to accept the culture shock that we don't react the same to different matters in our own homes, that's what makes our cultures different. I'm grateful though that we are bold enough to have these conversations.

I believe the South African government needs to address these issues. Some foreign nationals come to South Africa to obtain papers and ultimately benefit from the country. We should hold our government accountable for this problem, rather than blaming innocent individuals like Chidima. Corruption within the government is the root cause of the issue. South Africa has become a playground for corruption, which affects its integrity. It's possible that even her parents obtained their papers illegally. Many black foreign nationals seek to identify as South African to gain papers and succeed elsewhere, which might lead to the exploitation of the country for their benefit. Indigenous South Africans would likely find this unacceptable and would certainly resist. However, the primary issue remains with the South African government. They need to reform their policies and strengthen enforcement, as the current situation makes South Africa a vulnerable target, and many foreign nationals are quite comfortable here.

I think according to my logic that the reason this got the attention it got is because firstly she has four names and not even one is a south african name..secondly she doesn't speak South African languages..thirdly she had a Nigerian and Mozambiquen flags only without an SA flag before she got attention and last but not list Nigeria tensions between SA and Nigeria made it worse hence she had a Nigerian flag let alone was seen as more Nigerian than South African..so there are alot of factors that were hard to ignore by South Africans at this point..Its sad but true..I think hence she grew up in soweto if she at least spoke the SA languages and embraced the culture irrespective of her bieng Nigerian she was going to be well excepted cause she at least have the SA accent..I pray the day this beef ends hence its very toxic cause i believe Nigeria and SA working together will be good for not only the two countries but for Africa as a whole..And to be quite honest black on black hate is disgusting and should be changed eventually at some point when the two countries eventually talk about fixing it and respecting one another and grow together with the rest of Africa..But sadly has to start with the politicians that are currently useless at the moment..thats my take as a South african Danko

There seems to be a misunderstanding here...the rainbow nation concept is about bringing together the diverse population groups already present in SA before 1994 and attempting to forge a common sense of nationhood through time. It is not meant to include those who came after 1994 and certainly isn't meant to operate as a standing invitation for all and sundry to join in.

We will not be bullied. Miss South Africa is a national flag bearer, a representative of our people to the globe. South Africans have a right to demand to be represented by someone that they resonates with them and their indigenous traditions.

The department of Home Affairs has found that her mother committed fraud obtaining South African documentation, therefore Chidimma Adetshina is not South African. You are very quick to call patriotic citizens xenophobic and spread misinformation and damage for views and clicks. Pathetic.

You guys are quick to call Xenophobia yet she is 23 years old but her father said he came to South Africa in 2010 so she should be 14 years old not 23. South Africa has a huuuge problem of corruption at home affairs. She has failed to answer Questions about her Father's statements. SOUTH AFRICA has a problem of illigal migration with thoussands of Europeans, Asians & millions of Africans here in our country. In America, Europe & Australasia they have the same problem but as South Africans have to accept it.
