  • In this installment of the Hobby Journal Tom takes a look at a selection of HJ Knives. The humble fahrtenmesser has always enjoyed a great deal of popularity with collectors; there is a great deal to learn about what at first glance appears to be a simple knife!

Tom would like to thank everyone for all the positive feedback (and funny negative feedback) on the first Hobby Journal. Hopefully we'll be able to keep these going in the months to come.

Tom, nice presentation. Thanks. I had an anodized scabbard version in good shape that I picked up very reasonably (at a gun show) when I was young. Traded it away eventually for some junk or other, as kids sometimes do. Was told by a collector at one time to actually look for a very slightly loose HJ diamond, because the method of attachment of the bent over tabs tended to loosen somewhat over time, and so, was one (not foolproof) method of possibly checking for originality. Lots of repros have glued diamonds. Once saw a youth knife with a diamond with a blue and white enamel 'fleur de lis' in the grip! This again was many, many years ago. Not sure what that was about(?) but it seemed well done, and as though it had long been that way. (?) Was not able to examine it very closely, and would not have known exactly what I was looking at in any case at the time. Have you ever seen that?

Very informative video and I learned a lot; however, I was really hoping you'd have mentioned the HJ watch bayonets or other variants of the dagger. As a collector myself, I enjoy seeing the unique and different variants aside from the mainstream versions.

Also, I've seen HJ daggers where the end pommel had a design etched into it and had the diamond with the party insignia there. My guess is they were early blades but any additional information to them would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, the Watch Bayonet. I know he was going to mention them, but couldn't locate the one example we had on hand!

@@WittmannAntiqueMilitaria as for my other comment, any idea as to what year or why the HJ i've seen before had the Hj insignia engraved into the pommel area instead of the usual spot? it looked fancy. If I can find a pic of one I'll link it.

It turns out to be a HJ honour knife. If there is any information Tom is willing to share, I'm all ears. They're beautiful knives and more affordable compared to the other honour knives on the market.

Those which are in very good condition and have the packaging were probably never used. I'm pretty certain mine was used as some thoughtful Hitler Youth put two Reich Phennings in the scabbard so they always have a little money on them. I looked up the RZM code a while back but don't remember the year but believe it's post 1938 and the Phennings were 1942 and 1943 btw

I have a knife my father-in-law was given to him by his great uncle. No one has been able to give me info on it. No I've got some references. Thanks heaps. It also has what appears to be a rego number etched into the blade. Like I said it's in excellent condition.

I just bought one here in Sweden, unfortunately the emblem on the grip is removed.. The blade is marked with “carl schlieper solingen germany”.
Is this knife post war? Does this ”carl schlieper” effect the price?
    Would really appreciate a answer!
    Great video!

With the name ,Fahrtenmesser' you could buy knifes of this style up to the 80s/ 90s in Germany. Of course without the HJ symbols.

Would these knives ever be carried into combat? For example, did the young soldiers of the SS "Hitlerjugend" division carry these with them during their fighting in Normandy in 1944? Did they carry them during Volkssturm service in 1945 when in combat?

  • @MrMobieleauto

I wonder if it is possible for you to check out my HJ knive. I know for sure it is real, but for some reason the knife goes backward in the scabbard. What I mean by that is that the Swastika doesn't show when it is in the scabbard. Is that a known error? I tried putting it in the scabbard with the swastika showing, but it is quite obvious that the knife should'nt go in there like that. It just doesn't slide in smoothly.
