Sunak says that nobody will be released who poses a threat to the public, which begs the question, if they don't pose a threat why are they even in prison in the first place?

Excellent point. I suspect that only a miniscule percentage of the population is aware that it is SERCO who makes the prisoner release decisions.

Remember one of the policy areas Labour had announced for ages, scrapping the non-dom tax? Yea Tories stole that at the Spring budget... Strategically it makes sense to withhold as much policy from the media as possible until the GE is announced, otherwise Tories will snatch it.
When Sunak announces an election I am certain we will hear that. We've already seen the tories pull some of Labour's plans during the latest budget.
It is strategic, if he tells the Tories what he would do they will steal and make it theirs. Labour will set out most of their plans just before the general election.

Notice how Sunak points to his own MPs when he says "past" towards the end. He knows they're the past, that's why.
Is this the same Starmer who opposed the deportation of foreign criminals, some of whom went onto commit serious crimes like rape and murder, is the same labour who opposes stop and search to catch knife carrying criminals and is the same labour, who defends the ECHR, which as made prisons a soft touch, rather then a deterrent and is the same Starmer, who will determine that illegal immigrants entering the UK, will be automatically be classified as legal and so, he is supporting the criminal act of entering the UK illegally. Sunak is a weak fool, but Starmer would be even worse.

Labour's answer will be to send fewer people to prison. How is that any different from releasing prisoners early ? It just means the criminals will be on the streets even earlier.
More prisons is the answer but neither side have any interest in building any. Crime will only become a prime issue when it affects those in charge.

Starmer gets a lot of mileage out of criticising the government, which is easy to do because there's so much to criticise, but he completely lacks any alternative offer. He needs some actual policies.
It's an election stratagy. There is absolutely no tactical reason to state any policies. He can just stay quiet, criticise the current government and win the election by just being the alternative.
As long as the election is a referendum on the tories, labour will get into power.
We saw a similar scenario in the USA where people were so anti-trump that biden, the brain adelled man he is just did nothing and won.

Those prisoners were let out with only 13 days left on their sentence. Tories are letting them out with 70 days left on their sentence.
