    Hello, hello! James & Sarah here, back with another episode in our van build series. This week we’re cracking on with the interior & making our first campervan kitchen cabinets.
    The job gets off to a solid start (after we figure out how to use a router that is), but the pressure was getting to us this week & we have quite a few arguments over some hinges of all things.
    Tune in to see how it all turns out & whether we do indeed manage to get the first part of our DIY sprinter kitchen built & fitted..
    Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed this van conversion video don’t forget to smash the thumbs up & hit that subscribe button so you don’t miss the next episode.

    Would you bother making your own cabinets or should this be an IKEA job?!

      I love the idea that you made your own cabinets. It definitely was neat that you were able to consider the weight of the car by going lighter but i could see the headache that you were going through. Also Sarah I saw the Proper British Bird that you gave James haha. that was too funny. Ikea would be easier but you would have to design your whole van plan around it instead of making them fit. I thinking you guys did it right. Plus everything did turn out beautiful Excited for next weeks video!

      Yeah big headaches! Haha that bird was definitely deserved. We were really pleased with how they turned out in the end despite how hard it was so we think we made the right choice too 😀 Catch you next week ☺️

    Well done, great job.

    perfect job! Screws that comes with handles have usually 2 til 4 spots without any treath on the screw. Thats where you saw them in the right length

    You guys are amazing, stand back and look what you have done.... wowzar. Those cabinets are the business. Just put both my swivel seats in with the help from my son, woah the seats are heavy. Feels great. And the sound deadening and super liner is all done as well. So happy!! Take care and stay safe guys xxx

    Wow! You guys are amazing I thought you’d bought the cupboards! They look amazing. Btw why didn’t you buy them and adapt them?

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The main reason we didn’t buy them and adapt them was that we wanted to maximise the space completely and felt it would be a compromise even if we gave a few cms away. We were also concerned with weight and managed to save a fair amount by using thinner ply on the doors and drawer fronts and not having backs on the cupboards. Plus we had plenty of time on our hands 🤣 But if we were to do another van we’d definitely consider buying flat pack. Much easier 😅

  • @TheVanderfulLife
    @TheVanderfulLife 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Most other van builds I've seen they've used 1x2's to frame it but always thought about doing it this way to save weight...And yours turned out so good in the end I think i'd be doing it this way for sure (taking note on the screw sizes!!) Would you say its plenty sturdy enough with the worktop on?

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah most builds we saw did that as well. It’s definitely easier and less time consuming to frame it out, but you’re right the weight benefits are there, and for us it was worth the extra time. They’re definitely strong too. We can sit on the worktop (although never tried it both at the same time) so they can hold plenty of kgs no problem 😉

    The cupboards and drawers look perfect 😍 what wood did you use to make the shaker effect on the drawer faces? 6mm ply with 6mm ply strips?

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Exactly that, 6mm ply with 6mm edging strips. If you’re planning on using the same hinges we’d recommend making the strips at least 40mm wide to avoid the problem we had with the screws! Ours were 35mm (we just chose that randomly before we’d bought the hinges) and that 5mm caused us no end of headache 😂😂😂

    Hi, I’m really enjoying watching your videos ,they are superb. We have a caravan on Anglesey so I especially enjoyed your tour of the island and North Wales. It is my dream to buy a van and convert it and the one I want is a Mercedes Sprinter however some have them have incredible high mileage on them . Did it take you a while to find the right van and was the high mileage a concern for you when looking ?

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delayed reply, so glad you're enjoying the videos 😊 It did take us quite a while to find the right van and mileage was something we had to compromise on quite a lot. But after speaking to lots and lots of people who have owned sprinters and people telling us they can easily go for 250k miles, some even up to 500k if well looked after, it put our mind at ease. We decided instead to get the newest one we could afford with a good service history and that was in good shape. Hope that helps!

    Great work , 👌🏼 what size cable did u use for the fridge ?

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! We used a 1.5mm2 cable for the fridge 👍 But every system is different so you’ll need to work it out for your specific van if you’re installing one - you can find out how we calculated ours in this blog post - thewholeworldornothing.com/diy-camper-electrical-system/
      Hope that helps 😀

  • @ishmaelbartley695

    Could you have used an angle grinder to cut the screws down to your required size so you could of used the hinges you originally wanted?

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That might have worked but cutting a screw to precisely 6mm would probably be quite difficult. And it’s just such a tiny amount of purchase in the wood that we didn’t want to risk going with such a small screw.

    • @ishmaelbartley695

    Could I ask what stops the fridge falling out whilst driving? Is it bolted in?

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazing driving!! 😀 But seriously no, it’s not bolted in, there is an option with this model to bolt it in but it involved drilling through the side so we opted against it. But we figured that with the direction the fridge faces (backwards), the only thing that will send it flying out is if we were to give it hell when we set off, but in a van this size it’s difficult to accelerate too quickly anyway so we theorised that it was unlikely to fly out. And so far we’ve been correct. It might move a cm or two but nothing drastic, even when we’ve been up steep gradient hills. Touch wood…
