This tutorial is inspired by a wonderful Photoshop tutorial. I thought: let's see how we can do something like this in Gimp, so I put in a bit of myself and a lot of Gimp. I hope you like it.😉
I have aphantasia(can't visualize/no mind's eye), and no matter the amount of classes i've taken have helped me really draw from looking at something/someone, and have been looking for ways to draw someone very special to me. I have been working on first creating a "cartoon" of her using this method which i am later going to use as an aid to draw her. I just wanted to thank you for explaining how to do this so well and I can't thank you enough, for being a catalyst in helping me forward myself in art as well as helping me make a gift for someone special to me.
Thank you so much!!! I get the feeling your wonderful, precise, step by step description of how to trace an image with GIMP's paths tool has just saved my week,my deadlines and my sleep!
You must be a mind reader. I am working on a project now that I want to change some photos I have into cartoons. I haven't been able to find the look I want, until now! However, I think this technique is beyond my current talent ability. But with your patient straight forward descriptions I feel confident I can try. Thank you again for another top notch video!!
Hey Gator Growl73! That is indeed a wonderfull coïncidence. 😊 I really hope that it will work out for you. You can try using the free select tool instead of the paths tool if you feel more comfortable with that tool. When your first attempt is not succesful, it can be a good idea to start again, totally from scratch, until you get a result that is to your liking. Anyway, I wish you lots of succes with your project. 👍 Best, Jan.
I do have one question that hopefully you will see and answer. Will the result be the same or at least similar if I am using photos that are a bit grainy or at a lower resolution?
It is no problem when images are grainy or even unsharp, because you will make a totally new image. You could however schale the photo that you want to use a bit up in size as well as in resolution (pixels per inch), because then the final cartoon image will also have this higher size and resolution. I hope this helps 😃
🍰 Fijn weekend. Jan.
One suggestion I could make is rather than typing in the HTML colors (because you may be working with a different color scheme in your image) you can have a layer with the original image available, use the color picker to select your "fill" and voila - you now have a very precise color code to be true to your regular image.
Hi replay again I did not s p again.... I've been doing a comics it's really fun but this method photo to comics I've never been tried... I will try this on my own Thank you for a clear instructions.... I tried to learn a little on digital arts only here in YT since my profession was far from arts at first I really don't know on digital arts now I'm learning slow ly Have a blessed day
Hi Time is Gold. Thank you for your kind comment. 👍 I wish you much succes with your 'comic learing project'. And you too, have a blessed and beautiful day. ✌️
I've been working on my profile pic now for hours. Making sure to keep hitting save...lol Trying to find auto save option but for now, going to take a break and get back to it when my eyes don't hurt anymore. Great Tutorial, on learning a lot of the finer points of gimp! Love this tutorial and Thank You very much for making it!
Hi John, that are a lot of hours ... I hope they are fun.😃 I don't think there is a standard auto save option in Gimp, but there might be a downloadable script some where on the web. I myself make regular back up's on my external hard drive in jpg and xcf when working on a bigger project. Thanks for you compliments, glad you enjoye the tuts. 👍 Have fun with Gimp and the tuts. Best regards, Jan.
👏 (dit moet applaus voorstellen he...) Jammer hoor 😢. Je kunt het ook met het free select tool proberen eventueel. In ieder geval, dank je wel voor je berichtje. Jij ook een goede nachtrust gewenst. 🛌
Why after you index to 3 colors, can't you just magic wand area and change the color that way on different layers. Seem like it would be a lot faster and easier.
Thank you very much, it was very interesting. I didn't understand all the numbers put into the HTML box and there were other things I was a bit foggy on but otherwise it was excellent.
Not sure what happened, but when I try to fill colors, they don't match with what I've selected in the color selection window. For example, my foreground color is white, but when I fill the eyes, it fills with blue instead... no clue how to undo that so I game up lol (and yes, my image is in RGB mode).
Hi Zephyr ☺ Thanks for your comment. Sorry for my late respons...no internet for over a week 😕 But I have no idea what goes wrong on your side. Maybe check all your settings and steps very carefully, But you probably have done that already. Sorry. Have a great weekend anyway 👍
Thank you for this tutorial. I'm now fairly certain that I'll never use any of the Adobe products (except Acrobat Reader, of course). Firstly, there's Adobe's greedy, ridiculous, blood-sucking monthly licensing model. Secondly, there's the obnoxious, condescending attitude of many of Photoshop and Illustrator's users, both professionals and casual users. Thirdly, GIMP is free, while Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher are much cheaper than Adobe's suite.
Greetings Mr. Jan. I wish to you continued success, and you are develop our potential in using GIMP. Salam, Mohammad Javad Sonebeh. 😊Thank you for your comment and input. In Gimp 2.10.6, they have removed the I warp filter from the filtermenu. It is now a special tool, in the toolbox. Shortcut W. This is a tutorial on the Warp tool: th-cam.com/video/AN6Q0Mzm4TE/w-d-xo.html I hope it helps.👌 Have a wonderful weekend. Regards, Jan, GW.

Thank You! Very Good Tutorial!
I have a question about the eyes step. What if my person has hair that reaches and covers their eyes partially?
Really great video! As always, a lot of valuable information. And the result is fantastic. Thank you so much. Regards : ^ )
Ah, MAK9 Marcos 👍 Thank you (as always 😋) for taking the effort to post you uplifting comment. Have a great day! Best regards, Jan.

I don't have eyes in my photo, that should not be a problem right? I can just skip the part with the eyes i'm guessing...
Good work!
Very good tutorial
Cool!
Strong technique
Just a suggestion: Make the bony outline of the nose bridge more prominent, and it'll still be minimalist, but perfect.
GOOD JOB
