Thanks for the reaction. I love this song. The author is Marko. He asked Tarja to sing this duet with him and in return he promised to sing her duet with her. I'm glad that Marko makes different music than Nightwish. It is very refreshing. Tarja's music is also different from Nightwish's sound, but also from Marko's music.
This is a great song for them. The two reconciled already in 2017, when Marko apologized to her. Regarding Tarja's departure from Nightwish he recently said in an interview that when he came to Nightwish, the band was already split and he couldn't judge where the truth was because everyone told him something different. He also said that, according to him, the problem was mainly in the communication between the two managements.
He has renewed his friendship with Tarja and they organize a tour together. Marko said about the song that it started as a song for his wife but ended up as a union of two friends and that this song has multiple interpretations and he doesn't want to reveal all of them.
This song also fits perfectly with Marko's history with Tarja and their reconciliation. And they sing it in this way at their concerts, and it certainly seems that, thanks to this video, they meant that the song would still be perceived that way.
He said, however, that the song could also be seen as a departure from Nightwish. Since his departure from Nightwish, Marko has not been in contact with any of its members. Tarja and Tuomas communicate with each other rather formally via emails.

@@strabel803 Im sure he is in good terms with Floor and probably with Tuomas, but he said that when he was having depression and alcohol problems didn't find answer or confort inside the band, something that happened forever inside the band. They are cold people. And he felt the demands for band's commitments to the bussiness issues, tours, press conference, etc. So decided to leave. And lately, at some interview, he hinted some resentment about not being considered at the time to compose or be present on Nightwish art.

The beautiful thing about this song is that it's for his wife and it's about him and Tarja at the same time. It's simply a song about love, but love comes in many forms.

Tarja and Marko together has always been such a magnetic combination, opposites attract ❣ I love Tarja's voice so much, it's so clear and gentle but also strong when it needs to be and gives every song such a special touch.
I think she was so well matched for Nightwish but I also adore her solo work nowadays and the collaboration with Marko was a gift!! :)

Marko wrote the song for his wife, the decision to duet with Tarja came later.
Sure, you can get an 80's feel in some of his music. He has been doing this since 1982 when he was 16, formed his first band, Tarot, and sang lead. This, I believe is the first time you have heard him sing lead. In addition to Tarot, he sang lead a few times with Nightwish. He has a solo album put out in 2020, and is part of a supergroup called Northern Kings where he sang lead on some songs.
To pronounce Tarja, use a soft "J", like a "Y", and roll the "R". (Tarrr-ya).
If you would like to hear more of Marko on lead, try some of these: "Wings of Darkness" or "Tides' from Tarot. With NW, the cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" at Helsinki 2005(End of an Era DVD), "The Islander" (Tampere 2015), or "While Your Lips Are Still Red" (Wembley 2015). and from his 2020 solo album Pyre of the Black Heart, "The Voice of My Father", "Stones" , or "Dead God's Son".

Yes, Left on Mars is initially dedicated to his wife, but in collaboration with Tarja, it became something much more in interpretations as well. Marko confirmed it in the interview. Now it's also a song about forgiveness and finding a friend again.
And this is where the difference between Marko's former colleagues in Nightwish and Tarja becomes apparent. He wanted her back so badly that he crossed the chasm and reached out to her years ago. Now she's much more supportive of him than anyone in Nightwish, none of whom even asked him how he was after he nearly collapsed. And from the videos of their recent concerts, I can see that he is also supporting her. Moreover, Marko's talent was increasingly pushed into the background in Nightwish. In Left on Mars I can once again appreciate the power of his voice.
And it looks like the two are happy together, so hopefully they'll continue working together.

How do you know that never asked him how he was? Did Marko say that in an interview or stg? In what way were Marko's talents pushed into the background especially if he coped with severe depression?

      @AdamVop 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@KristiinaBerg Marko said in a recent interview that he hasn't been in contact with anyone from Nightwish since he left. I don't remember in which of the many interviews he said that.
But it is already mentioned in the English version of his wiki page, and the source is also mentioned there. He also said that others (he did not name who exactly) accused him having serious mental problems (I'm paraphrasing). And that's what he said in this interview in 1:40 th-cam.com/video/36Q30N3W4wg/w-d-xo.html

@@AdamVop I read the Finnish and the English Wikipedia entries and Marko stated that he has not been in contact with Nightwish. I listened to the interview as well. Marko has been very open about his mental health problems so I don not think than anybody needed to "accuse" him of anything, on the contrary. At least he did not say anything about it in the interview.

      @AdamVop 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@KristiinaBerg I don't know who he was talking about in that interview. But in another interview, he talked about the fact that the business side of Nightwish did not take into account his mental health. He didn't name anyone. I'm glad he's better. Apparently he is happy as a solo artist. He can set his own pace and it looks like his renewed friendship with Tarja has helped him a lot. I read in an article, and it was mentioned by a lot of people, that their performance last year gave him faith in his music and himself. He probably needed a new impulse, and Tarja apparently helped him with that

"Marko's talent was increasingly pushed into the background in Nightwish."
Let me remind you that before Nightwish, Marko was an almost forgotten local Finnish "rock star" from the disbanded 80s band Tarot, playing bass for the rather mediocre short-lived female fronted band Synergy. And it was Nightwish and the creative opportunities that Tuomas gave him that allowed Marko to resurrect his career and become a truly internationally recognized rock musician.

Hey there, ladies! Tarja and NightWish huge, long-time fan/addict here! lol. I just came across your channel and I'm thoroughly enjoying your reactions. You've got a new subscriber right here and lots of thumbs up! Thank you for this reaction btw, though musically it's not my favourite I absolutely love this song, the sort of "classic old school rock" vibe with bluesy sort of feels, the synthetizer and the strings arrangement on the background, not to mention Marko's crazy awesome bass line in the beginning, and especially I love the fact that the meanings behind it are sort open to interpretation (I like your take on it btw). I find this sort of melancholic nostalgia evoked in here so fitting, for it's partially about finding something that feels like home because it reasonates deep into you, it's brilliant because it is a familiar feeling that touches who you really are for it has always been there, does it make sense? To me in the songs it's like he feels he doesn't fit anywhere in this bloody world, he never did and not by choice, but still tried hard to meet the expectations of others to the detriment of his self in order to be accepted ("I never chose to be an Alien"/"And I turned page after page"). It's as if the essence of who he really is simply is too diverging from everything on Earth, he's completely dissociated from everything in this planet, does not belong anywhere and feels all alone because of that, forsaken, misunderstood, causing his heart to give in to rage and sorrow. They're just looking for a home, and what better home for an alien than Mars (Mars maybe being a symbol of the feeling of finally belonging somewhere or with someone who understands him and is just like him, an "alien", and they finally find home in each other). And despite all rage and hatred, they still believe in one another (that part of the video where their foreheads touch, OMG 🥲). It's not about discovering who they are, they already did that journey and knowing their true selves is precisely what makes them stand out while also sort of being ostracized by others who don't undestand them because they don't quite fit in any category or label. It's also so relatable! Who among us never felt that way during our lifetime for whatever reason, like an alien or even a freak, longing for a home, a place (not necessarily literal) where we can fully be ourselves and just belong?
I don't believe Marko intended to aim it to Tarja, but I mean, it's so fitting their trajectories, their individual journeys to find themselves and express their souls through their Art: both of them are "aliens" of sorts both as individuals and as artists, they just can't be put into a confining, limiting existencial cage; they always got along well and I think they have this vocal and stage chemistry and became friends while in NW for this reason, perhaps there's always been a mutual understanding between them, but then decades ago all that drama followed involving Tarja and the guys (including Marko - once he himself said that he felt like he had lost a friend, a sister; indeed they treat each other like wise brother and sister, it's lovely🥰), and then years later Marko had his own personal issues which led him to leave the band... They both kind of felt isolated and lonely (in different moments in time, ofc) and overcame their respective inner struggles, pains and challenges, so they were always meant to find their way back to each other sooner or later, like kins or kindred spirits ("Alone together left on Mars", as says the last line of the song), that's how I see it! I'm not saying it's the truth, it's just one possible interpretation and I do find it beautifully fitting this moment of their lives 🖤😍
Now ladies, I hope you're taking suggestions from the comment section for I have plenty lol. So if that's alright I'd like to drop down here my recommendations for you to see at some point from Tarja's solo career. I do hope I can encourage you to continuie your NW reactions in all eras, whilst also adding to your reaction list some of Tarja's work from her long, successful solo career, so you can see her for who she truly is as an artist. Her vast, stunning solo work is full of precious gems, unlike anything else and it deserves more attention, it's creative and overall mindblowing, plus she's obviously much more mature now and developed so much her abilities, 'tis inspiring how she's constantly growing and improving herself as an artist and a person, so only in her solo career you truly get a full scope of her artistry and talent!
I mean, Tarja's Music is another epic, life-changing journey, as much as NW's. Her solo work is full of gems to find out, and since after her departure from NW she's clearly much happier and free to be fully herself. And ever growing vocally and artistically through the years. She's simply a fantastic, hard working, super talented and phenomenal artist who's sometimes a bit underrated by some unfortunately, a remarkably beautiful soul too! Such an amazing artist, so creative, expressive, she plays the piano (since she was 6 actually), became a noteworthy songwriter/composer (yes, most of her songs are written and composed by herself), and a producer, collaborator... And a powerful, captivating performer; I love her stage presence and energy, she always gives all of herself and owns the stage. She's truly one of a kind! I got to see her live a few years ago and mate, what a mesmerizing voice and enthralling presence! She draws in every person in the audience, controls the crowd without having to say a word, as if she's casting a spell or is connected on a deep level, we feel that and she does too, and knows how to use it! The videos can capture a glimpse of that power, but seeing her live... Wow, it's an entirely different experience! She's much more energetic on stage now solo than while with NW, yet she managed to keep that same majestic aura and otherworldly presence! And at the same time with a distinctly dramatic expression, human approach, emotionally charged renditions when it is needed! I don't know how to explain it, but I also get this feel from her, this sort of vibe of like a dark sorceress warrior, Morrighan-like bewitching powerful entity or something lol
Therefore imo, one cannot hope to truly know Tarja as an artist without diving into her astounding solo work too. She's such an inspiration to me, her voice and renditions give me deep, spiritually magical Eargasms💘 A-hem... Sorry about that lol. I just Love her so much! It's just that her heavenly voice and work speak deeply to my soul. Anyway, her musical rock/metal style (besides her classical music and dark xtmas stuff, and other "out of the box" side projects of hers) is very unique and not easily defined or labeled, though it still has plenty of the symphonic metal elements as guidelines such as some kinds of guitar riffs, epic orchestral arrangements, dramatic theatrical "ingredients" and her remarkably dark, powerful operatic vocals (though now she hybridly adapts and mixes her classical singing tecnique with a few more "contemporary" styles and her strong chest voice in a very singular, non mainstream way). Her solo work is much more versatile, she incorporates and merges aspects of different stylistic elements, and is always experimenting new things in her music without any fear of exploring the unusual, so you never really know what to expect or what she'll do next, AND I find it thrilling, exciting!!! Plus, I love the fact that she walked her own path and found her "artist self", never trying to recreate her old days with NW and just finding her own ways to translate her soul into this world through her Art, and I absolutely LOVE the results of her choices, I hope you like it too.
So, without further ado, back to the list in the next comment🤣 (I tried to make a selection as short as I could, really difficult to choose from her vast, outstanding repertoire lol, but there's much more to explore as you go):

      1. th-cam.com/video/6T-Wyw9lYyM/w-d-xo.html . Song "In for a kill". Album "What lies Beneath" (2010). Performance from her 2012 first live-album "Act I". Bombastic! Hear the lion within her roar!
      2. th-cam.com/video/K3QmQN7VSNI/w-d-xo.html . This is also from Act I, a kind of mixed version of two of her ballad songs ("Oasis" and "The archive of lost dreams"). Here she sings while playing a grand piano, showing some dramatic nuances of her expression and voice, sort of "gothic vibes". She delivers such a touching, emotional performance! It brings tears to my eyes! It's sort of a "forgotten" treasure!
      3. th-cam.com/video/jxqodwLVdcU/w-d-xo.html . "Love to Hate", this song is part of her 2016 album "The Shadow Self" and the performance recorded in 2018 for her live-album Act II, at London's Metropolis Studios, a more intimate setting, which makes it even more special. Outstanding, breathtaking performance, one of my favorites! Plus, the song has an unusual structure, it's awesome.
      4. th-cam.com/video/tv4XWkTWQ0M/w-d-xo.html . "Undertaker", also live for Act II, and another track from "The Shadow Self". Brilliant! You'll love this one, her energy is amazing and the song is epic!
      5. th-cam.com/video/UGkbQj8e6JI/w-d-xo.html . "Crimson Deep", also from "What lies Beneath" and performance, from Act I too. It gives me chills, I just love it!
      6. th-cam.com/video/TGjkjNXYBWI/w-d-xo.html . "Dead Promises", live at Masters of Rock 2019, and the song is from her 2019 album "In the Raw". Freaking awesome! Great guitar riffs that function as a driving force to the song. Many songs in this album actually have this same characteristic, I think you'll love it.
      7. th-cam.com/video/CpxA5JTT5Ec/w-d-xo.html . "Shadow Play", also from her "In the Raw". Link to the studio version for the epic choir and orchestra, but there is an outstanding live performance at Circus Life where she plays piano too, worth checking out.
      8. th-cam.com/video/Lq-genEQNLA/w-d-xo.html . "Innocence", from "The Shadow Self" and live at 'Circus Life' in Bucharest, in 2022 (quite recent). Fantastic live version, no backtrack recordings or anything like that, everything literally live! Beautiful, it feels so alive to me, as the whole concert!! Worth checking out as well is the official video for context
      9. th-cam.com/video/R_CQNdPbkzM/w-d-xo.html . That's a double 'cause I couldn't find a better live recording lol, so here it is: live at Luna Park Ride in 2011, first song is "Stargazers" by NW (from their album Oceanborn) but performed during her solo career, and following this she sings her own song "Ciarán's Well" (from her first solo rock album "My Winter Storm"). So epic, her operatic vocals and stage presence going wild, so much energy, sure you'll be blown away
      10. th-cam.com/video/GxDnhbGTJSs/w-d-xo.html . "Victim of Ritual", live at Woodstock (Poland) in 2016. Insane great music inspired and built on Ravel's Bolero! Crazy vocals, wild energy, she's got such unbelievable stamina and ability to keep jumping and moving all around the stage while singing that way, with so much intensity, engaging the crowd and having fun!
      11. th-cam.com/video/6qSuCMKF2n4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aCwfhNlj2Jd026Wo . "Supremacy", it's a Muse cover, live in Milan for Act II. Astonishing presence, thrilling high notes!
      12. th-cam.com/video/0QtdQQne2Ts/w-d-xo.html . "Passion and the Opera", this one is actually by NW but performed in Tarja's solo career, 'twas in 2007 (therefore after the breakup). I don't think they ever performed this song live together, neither did the other NW singers as far as I know. Anyway it's sooo amazing!!! In this song Tuomas seems to make "subtle" musical mentions of Mozart's "Queen of the Night" aria, from his opera "The Magic Flute". Love this and Tarja is gorgeous, showcases much of her vocal skills and powerful energy on stage!
      13. th-cam.com/video/yma4r9Ep_kc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ffYuiRtg2LmxJknc . "The Reign", from her first rock album "My Winter Storm", but the performance from Act I. The song itself is alredy beautiful and emotional, definitely a hidden gem, and then what she does here.... So very touching, a unique moment that shows the special bond, reciprocal connection of love and trust between Tarja and her fans. I can't tell you more, you have to witness it lol
      14. th-cam.com/video/LIwC7P7zAOk/w-d-xo.html . "Medusa", from her "Colours in the Dark" and live at Metropolis Studios as well. Greek mythology driven, very different atmosphere she evokes here, epic yet mystical, mesmerizing, sort of alluring in a sense, I have not enough words to describe it lol. The studio version is a duet, worth checking out as well
      15. th-cam.com/video/1mrBJGdM5_U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iSCLrVdHidzqglu9 . "Eye of the Storm", the only new song in her 2022 compilation album "Best of: Living the Dream", which is a restrospective where she looked back to her career and handpicked songs from her six studio albums. She has such an interesting, remarkable way of putting hints that reference important parts of her personal and professional journey. And there's a unique mix of styles that she merges together, that's all I'm going to say for now lol
      16. th-cam.com/video/JFJkCdOUEQg/w-d-xo.html . "Stand Away", this one is actually featuring Tarja. The song is by Angra, a Brazilian melodic power metal band, in a live performance in 2013 I believe. It's another astounding piece of art! Prepare to be blown away by the music and the voices!..
Also, I don't know if you're into classical music (I am, I'm a classical musician lol), so should you wish to see her go full 'operatic' (I mean, her purely classical singing so you can hear the difference), let me know and I'll give you as well a small list with videos of her classical performances, totally worth it!
Thank you, ladies! Hope to see you soon. And sorry for such a long, massive comment split in two, I might have exceeded myself, I just couldn't help it😜. We fans are very passionate lol

Thanks for the reaction. I see a lot of comments about possible meanings, but the lyrics are versatile enough to be much more than just a love song. It was supposed to be like that in the beginning, but Marko had confirmed in a recent interview that he wanted to write more things into it after he reconciled with Tarja, because it meant so much for him as well. IMO, that variety makes the song deeper, and we shouldn't stick to just one meaning.

Hello lovely ladies, greetings from UK
I was pleased to hear that Tarja (pronounced Tar-y-ah) has taken a lot of the opera edge off of her singing vioice in this one. Back in the day she always sounded operatic in every song, and i think she sounds better now (in my opinion)
Marko never had a problem with any of Nightwish band members, he suffered from depression and was disolusioned with the industry, not the band. That is why he left
Marko was one of the people who was responsible for dismissing Tarja from Nightwish, and I had read somewhere that he was the principal instagator of that, but they made up many years ago. I think the phrase they sing to each other "I still believe in you" is relevant and lovely. Did you notice that his beard is no longer split in two? That was his signiature look in Nightwish, so that is another change
This was never going to sound like a Nightwish song because it wasn't composed by Tuomas (Nightwish keyboardist), who composes most Nightwish songs. The video was filmed by the same guy who does Nightwish's filming though
Lastly, the lyric "I'm just looking for a home". You can't help but think that is because they are no longer in Nightwish can you, whether that is true or not?

I am really enjoying this song, and although I have had to go back and listen to Nightwish with Tarja as lead singer! I really enjoy Tarja, and from what I know, Floor & Tarja are friends!
Now...for Mario's intro to the song, I know Marko...who is 58, grew up just a few years behind me, as I am 66, and I would bet he was a Led Zeppelin fan....as the beginning of "Left On Mars" intro can be found in several of Led Zeppelin's songs...Kashmir being one of them! Which...Is why I am really enjoying this song!
Led's Iintro's were a bit more subtle...but I recognized it from the very first time I heard the song! I wish I could give Marko a huge hug...this is one dang good song!

Nice detail is that it was Marco who said FIRST that Tarja have to kick off the NW (2005)....And now they tuor together.🙂 So nice example that you really can solve old disagreement and live your life just now, without old burdens😊

I see you as everyday house wives. Being confronted with actual feelings, at least in a couple years. Now you need to come to terms

The rage and being lost or being an alien is because his problems of depression and mental disorder he suffered since long time. I dont think he is referring to Nightwish.

Tarja can't hold a candle to Floor and I thought Marko left Nightwish for health reasons, but maybe it was for collaboration purposes. This song did have an older sound to it, but some of the best songs ever written come from the older generation, you know, the older generation that I'm part of. Puff puff pass 😁😂🤣😎🙌✌️

TARJA is much more exquisite on every level not even close. Your need to lie proves it

I couldn't disagree more. Floor is a good singer but anything I've heard her sing that was first sung by Tarja really fails to do justice to those songs. She's just not on that level.

Floor sounds exactly like every other pop/rock singer, Tarja is unique.

“Tarja can’t hold a candle to Floor”. 🤣🤣🤣 Floor will forever ride the coattails of Tarja.
