    After watching this video about a year ago, I decided to give them a try. Your right! These things really throw off some molten medal. So, thank you for the heads up video. -Stephen, Ohio

    So long as you can get Sparks from the top of a lighter, it's useful!

    Try using a Corona AC8300 sharpening tool as your Ferraro striker. It helps throw some serious sparks.

    Ferro rods are mischmetal that contains iron. Typically the iron makes it harder and you get smaller shavings as you strike it this means sparks that dont continue to burn for long ( no rolling on the ground). I think the right term is the most specific one so although ferro rods are misch metal i think its better to refer to them only as ferro rods. these rods you're showing are impressive but the iron free rods will make a ball of lava that can burn for about 5 seconds or even longer if you know how. The down side of going with a rod that contains no iron is that they dont last as long each strike will remove more metal and its harder to throw sparks.
    Thanks for the thorough review these seem like a better compromise then what im using now. you've got yourself another subscriber.

      +koori049 ///but the *iron free* rods will make a ball of lava that can burn for about 5 seconds or even longer if you know how. The down side of going with a rod that contains *no iron* ///
      I have about 30 ferro rods of different shapes and sizes. I put handles on them as a kind of hobby. Every single one, from LMF 2.0 through to Chinese mystery metal ...all of them are attracted by a magnet. Can you tell me how something which supposedly has no iron content, can be attracted by a magnet?

    It is a shame that people feel the need to attack everything. Even ferro rod reviews are subject to attack, Technically they are all ferrocerium rods by definition and they are all misch metal as well. The definition for each is the same. Misch metal is just a term for ferro rods with a higher magnesium content. Usually, the ones that are being hailed as "ferrocerium rods" have a higher iron content. It is not worth getting worked up about.
    Now, On to the review. Thank You. I have been looking (and asking) for someone to tell me a good suggestion for a high Magnesium content "Firesteel" to get. I have a Light My Fire "firesteel on the way and it is hailed as one of the better high iron content rods. I want both types to do a comparison and see what fits me better. High Iron gives out " a shower of sparks" where high magnesium gives out the "sparks of rolling molten lava."
    Full Disclosure, Neither are my descriptions.
    But they both have advantages and I would like to see what works best for me. The friendly swede resales products from other companies but I have only had good experiences with them. I bought several items in the past and have been pleased.

    Nice job. I agree with you regarding the differences in fero rods with magnesium. They burn hotter and sparks last longer. Jet fighter planes use magnesium flares as a counter measure for heat seeking missiles as magnesium burns hotter than any other substance/metal. I have found Schrade fero rods have the same qualities as your's. I attached one to every sheath I have using a magic marker casing cut to 2 in. and held on with a ranger band. Shock cord keeps it secure in the holder I made. I even put tinder in tin foil on the back of the sheath under the ranger band. I will have to check out the fero rod you are using. Never leave home without one!

    If anyone (troll or not troll) knows of a better "Mischmetal" rod or high magnesium content rod that throws better "Balls of Molten Lava" , Please let me know. I am trying to see what works best for me. Higher Iron content aka "Ferro rod" or High Magnesium content aka "Mischmetal"
    Thanks for the input

      +ReviewOutdoorGear are you sure? The knife in this video doesn´t look like Benchmade Bushcrafter, because of the big guard and rubber (?) hold...

    • @ReviewOutdoorGear
      @ReviewOutdoorGear  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +vlksamotaar , oh, you mean in the video. Yes, thats an old cheap Meyerco, I can't even find the name of it. Its similar to the Meyerco Darrel Ralph Fixed Blade. The knife I currently use though, is the Benchmade.

    What a ridiculously biased review. For the record, I agree that this is one of the finest ferro rods I've ever used, but your review was child-like. Dismissing butane lighters and stormproof matches is just ignorant. There are probably more fires started with butane in the US alone each year, than have ever been started with ferro rods everywhere.

    • @ReviewOutdoorGear
      @ReviewOutdoorGear  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hmm. Well this IS a ferro rod review, and I'm not paid to do it and bought the thing myself. It is actually more dependable than a lighter and lasts longer. Of course a lighter may be easier to start with in certain situations, but not all.

    • @csh6220
      @csh6220 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A wet butane lighter won't work, and if you need fire ASAP, say after falling in icy water, I want a fero rod. Just my opinion.

    • @barlow2976
      @barlow2976 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all. He wasn't dismissing lighters and matches, he told us he packed them on his trips, but like me, doesn't want to rely on them. The fact more fires are started with butane is irrelevant, we're talking about bushcraft here.
