    Im going to order one of Nathan 4071 rods just to try one out. And I agree with you 100 %, our skill set has to be there when we need it the most. I bought a $1.00 kitchen knife at the Dollar store a year ago, and I teamed it with a $5.00 ferro rod, and I get fire every time I try, tinder and skill set is the bottom line. I know a handful of men that purchased 2000.00 custom rifles topped with the finest Leupold you can buy, and couldn't shoot for shit in their lives depended on it. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, again I appreciate it sir.

    Thanks for this video, I bought the Sasquatch, ordered it on Saturday and it was in my mail box on Monday, today, all the way to WV. Amazingly fast! So, his shipping is almost as fast as his fire starting. We pleased with the service and product.

    I have had a Blast using Nathan's 1/2 rod ...I use a piece of HSS lathe cut off bit for a striker ..It works great with fatwood ..I like shooting showers of sparks at waxed paper just for the fun of it lighting so fast

    • @AdventureTimeOutdoors
      @AdventureTimeOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol I do the same thing with waxed paper. I use my rods for everything. Lighting the bbq, birthday candles anything that that I can. Try your ferro rod on seeding dandelions. You can run through a field blasting those fluffy bastards with sparks pretending they are zombies. Lol

    Nice video and I as well agree that no ferro rods are the same. Need to be cautious with some of the Chinese manufactured ferro rods as many are actually magnesium with a ferro striker and not the greatest quality. I have not tried a rod from Nathan but the one I got from 4 directions Bushcraft is the one I take all the time now for sure spark, and it is the larger model as well. Great job.

    • @AdventureTimeOutdoors
      @AdventureTimeOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have heard the same about 4 directions bushcraft's products aswell. solid guy with a solid product. I have bought some from China. some were ok and some were absolutely garbage. It is good that there is at least 2 guys out there where you can be sure to get quality from. Thanks for watching

    Firesteel.Com is in my opinion the best ferro rods I've ever used, and I have hundreds of dollars invested in rods from everywhere except Nathan 401. I own over 60 ferro rods and most of them are 5 or 6in - 1/2 rods, and a monster 6in by 1in too. Bigger is definitely better in regards to ferro rods. The difference between a high quality high-end ferro rod and a cheap one is simple, how many strikes does it take you to get flame. I've wore down cheap rods within 2-3 months, until they ultimately snapped in half. I believe Nathan 401 is a little more affordable than Firesteel.Com rods, but they throw sparks like yours did every time, which is what you need when you're faced with marginal tinder. I enjoyed your video so thanks for sharing your thoughts and your experiences with ferro rods with me, I appreciate it sir.

    • @AdventureTimeOutdoors
      @AdventureTimeOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brad Barber I have tried many different steels aswell. Firesteel.com has a great product. I believe Nathans ferro rods to be comparable in quality but better in price. All things considered where you get your gear is of least importance. Most important is that you get quality gear and have the dirt time to ise them properly. I have a video somewhere where I light a fire with a 1" long by 1/16 th ferro rod that comes with one of those cheap survival kits and cook some lunch. It worked but wouldnt want to rely on that in the rain. Lol Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate your thoughts. Take care and stop by any time

  • @westoftherockies

    the smaller ferro rod isn't inferior, it just doesn't have the magnesium as the other type of rod so the tinder has to be more fine, a catail, cotton, dried grass etc will light up pretty easily with the average ferro rod, but those big magnesium rods are great too.

    • @AdventureTimeOutdoors
      @AdventureTimeOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      alizarin you are absolutely right! I have done a video using the smallest ferro rod I could find. It was 1" long and 1/16" thick and got the fire started in under 5 strikes. It is all about processing your materials correctly. Thanks for stopping by. 👍

    Hemlock, you say? I wish I knew my trees better...

    • @AdventureTimeOutdoors
      @AdventureTimeOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Muskrat Jim yup hemlock. The needles on a hemlock are flat like a balsom fir but shorter. Often people confuse hemlock tree with poison hemlock or water hemlock which I believe to be in the carrot family. Hemlock is a soft wood great for hand and bow drills. It is an evergreen but notbas resinous as pine, spruce or balsom fir. Nathan is an awesome dude with excellent ferro rods. The only other ferro rod that I have tried that is as good is 4 directions bushcraft ferro rods.

      Yup that's the beauty of scandi grinds. That sable is 3/16" and splits really well. Not too slicey though. If I was to get another one I would get it in 1/8" or 3/32". I prefer a slicer to a splitter. The wood I was using was straight grained hemlock though with very little knots. I probably could have split it with a karate chop. Lol

      @AdventureTimeOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      kenny cadarett the knife I used was a triple x Sable! The steel is l6 and it is an absolute bad ass. Go to triplex knives. com and you can see Derrick's lignin up. if you want another steel or handle material you can customize your knife if you want. you will find the phone number on the site and you can contact Derrick directly. he is a great guy and can help you out. if you want I have an unmoving video of this knife and a review of his Privateer model you can check them out if you want some specs and some close ups. if you give them a call tell them Adventure time outdoors sent ya. Happy new year

      Roland Silva Nathan is the man! He is an awesome dude and has a great product. In fact I lit a fire in almost 4 feet of snow last weekend with one of his rods. The neck knife is the triple x sable. It is a great knife. The cool thing is when you call them up you talk to the owner Derick. He is a great guy and makes great knives. You can also pick the steel and handle materials. www.triplexknives.com

      Adventure Time Outdoors thanks very much. I only got into Bushcraft 5 years ago but been so fortunate to make some great friends. I️ think those relationships are as awesome as being in the woods. I️ was very impressed with your support you showed him and loved that it shows how much you love the woods and sharing in your videos.
      Great stuff.
      Hard to find really good neckers with decent handles. So thank you for sharing.

      Rachael Rigoli that is the triple x sable. It is a great knife. To be honest I believe triple x to be the best bang for your buck. I have to other knives from them. I have videos for both. one is called the Privateer and the other is the Sitka. All three are excellent knives backed with a great warranty and very fairly priced.

      JNS Warlord i am in Canada aswell. I cant remember how much the shipping was but I would check out nathan4071 on ebay and see what the shipping costs are. I am still using this ferro rod. It has started hundreds of fires and still has thousands more to go. It is worth investigating. Stay warm my friend winter is coming.

      Gary voigt I saw that it had a tiny flame going just before I got it lit only after watching the footage. From the angle I was at I didnt see at all unfortunatly. But I think folks got the idea anyway. The ferro rod os a good one and can be relied on. Thanks for watching man. Have a good week.
