I can't listen to this music or watch the movie without tearing up. In fact, whenever I see Juliet, I tear up. When she appears on the dance floor in her red dress, I'm practically sobbing everytime for the sheer beauty of this girl that is out of this world. The boy is also very beautiful. These two youths were perfectly cast.

Found this from the Film Magazine:
Zeffirelli’s 1968 ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is considered ‘realistic’ or ‘accurate’, not only because of how it is in accordance with Shakespeare’s text, and how it is also set in Verona during the Renaissance, but also because of how the costumes designed by Danilo Donati - which earned the film an Academy Award of CBest Costume Design along with Best Cinematography - were extremely accurate when compared to the original play and were true to the time the story is set in. Although the dialogue was cut or trimmed in parts, this version stayed as loyal to the original stage play as possible.
The cast members were almost the same age as the young lovers in the play: Olivia Hussey was 15 at the time and Leonard Whiting was 17. Zeffirelli purposefully chose among a new, talented and still unknown generation of actors. Choosing fresh-faced actors of around the same age as the characters in the tragedy itself gave much realism to the story on screen, furthering the appeal of the picture.
The entire film was shot in Italy between Rome, Tuscany and the North of the country. This, along with the costumes, gave the impression of real Renaissance Italy in Verona, during the time when Romeo and Juliet are written to have lived, as well as when their tragic love story unfolded.
The music is very telling as well; Zeffirelli uses compositions that could be heard during the 15th and the 16th centuries, and this is no more prominent that in the ball scene where there is also the Moresca dance, which is amongst the most popular dance types in 15th century Italy, Spain and France. Zeffirelli, who was very careful and had a keen eye for detail, masterly and beautifully used this music during the dance. The main theme of the film is an original score composed by the great Nino Rota, who was a famous composer during the 60s in Italy and who was the author of many important and famous film scores of the time.

    • @presterjohn7789
      @presterjohn7789 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I believe only one composition, not plural, was from the period and that was the Moresca. However, I also suspect the Moresca is an original composition based on a tune from the period (Salterello I think). They are not identical! While it is common for films to shoot with another already known piece during film and replace it with original score later on (known as the 'temp track') so it appears to make logical sense, Zefferelli's and Rota's partnership on Romeo & Juliet goes back to a theatre version in 1961. It is entirely possible the 'temp track' included original music from that play. With Fellini, he often reshot scenes to film around Rota's replacement music so that is a possibility as well: that Rota adapted the renaissance dance music to an original composition and Zefferelli reshot the scene.

I saw this movie in our small town theater in the fall of 1969, when in 9th grade. A beautiful work of art, the best cinematic portrayal of Shakespeare's immortal play. I remember being enthralled watching. Few movies have that effect on me. The soundtrack has a lot to do with it, as well as the youth and beauty of the stars. IMHO, one of the best movies ever made.

Writing from Calif, the 'R' movie rating in USA was strict and I had to wait til 1974 to see this, but ALL of us in high school knew of this unsurpassable phenomenal production which with Franco Zeffirelli blessed our world, such a magnificent gift he gave us that NO other interpretation can hold a flame to it. ALL of us girls wanted to be untouchably gorgeous Olivia Hussey and wanted to find and marry our Romeo who looked like and loved like devastatingly splendorous Leonard Whiting (don't care what Leonard looks like now, still 'in love' with him - wink). My high school chum found and bought the entire soundtrack to the ENTIRE movie, it was 4 or 5 albums in a box. Oh how I miss that wonderful decent Renaissance Faire at Malibu Ranch decades ago where most people dressed in English and Italian costumes and spoke correctly for that time period. And when I went back to Italy in 1997, my sister and I went to Verona and found 'Juliet's Tomba' wherein I laid and we read the many letters, sister translated most, left inside the dark tomb, and as I draped myself over Juliet Capulet's parents' balcony, men tossed roses up in the air to me.......it was Heaven. I encourage anyone who has not been to Verona to get thee high hence to Juliet's house, the colosseum and then head over to Manuta.
RODDERS - THANK YOU SO DEEPLY FOR UPLOADING THIS. TOASTING YOU.

I remember reading where Sir Laurence Olivier wanted to speak the Prelogue in Romeo and Juliet. No one else had or has since a voice as his, not even dear Richard Burton. He was absolutely magnificent, and only a short piece.
The only other two movies I treasure this deeply are THE LION IN WINTER and BECKET.
I found the soundtrack to THE LION IN WINTER at an old hippie's record store he was closing in Marin County - could NOT grab it fast enough, but would LOVE Becket. My sister and I memorized most of Becket. There are some movies that are so dear to one's heart that you memorize them. Like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and MR. ROBERTS.
Rodders, I can't thank you enough for this.

Wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award for original score. Probably the worst overlook in history given the Box Office success of the film (8th highest grossing film in the US) and the fact that the love theme (in the Henry mancini version) was the 15th highest selling song on the Billboard Charts in 1969 (a 'modest' international hit according to Wikipedia). (In contrast, another famous film song My Heart Will Go On was #13 on the Billboard charts in 1998.)

Some movies defy remakes: at the time of its release II liked Baz Luhrmann's reboot - it was quick and clever...though I never really bought the Danes/DiCaprio dynamic... but I always found myself saying, 'but its not the Zeffirelli...' I've nothing against it but I don't think it has much endurance; at best it exists as a fun riff to plunge through after you've seen the Zeffirelli which is - as it should be, utterly sincere. 'R & J' does not require irony, indeed, irony taints it. That is to be seen in the manic passion of Whiting and Hussey on screen. As an elder you can laugh at the fervent hysteria of the two young lovers, but only through the veil of one's wisdom and recollection. As for young folk who require the contemporary music video treatment of material in order to commit to anything I would argue there is nothing 'dated' about the Zeffirelli

Hhope to to prevent Juliet's death but it's too late and Juliet wakes up as Juliet wakes up. So sad and poignant.
