i fought this for about 1000 rounds, until i heard one idea. Let recoil happen. If you have a proper grip you can just let it happen. Start out slow squeezing the trigger until its on the verge of firing then watch your hands and shoulders and focus hard on the front sight. first few shots youll see it. Not so much a flinch but a push from your shoulders or wrist. Just hold that spot correct the sight pic and keep squeezing. For fast firing this isnt usually nessessary as you dont give yourself time to think about the shot. But if you want a super stong accuracy game like your shooting a 22 short just let the recoil happen. Its so funny that something so simple is so difficult to master. It may not work for you but it was my flinch cure.

I’m fighting this now. My very first shot is a bullseye then I’m low. I have a thousand rounds or so through hand guns.

This is a big issue for me, and I am still struggling.
I think it's from starting off with a 44 mag, (shoot a 9mm currently) that nervousness is always there.
To any newbies out there thinking about shooting, start with a 22 and work up to bigger guns slowly.

Just left the range and I still fight this. I always revert to anticipating. The moment I relaxed and let the recoil happen without trying to control it the anticipation went away. The other problem I have is trigger flinch. Keeping my right hand slightly relaxed solved that problem. My instinct is the control the recoil and squeeze tight with my trigger hand. It always results in a low and to the left grouping. I consistently shoot low and to the left until I relax.

@yurgon try a red dot sight if ya can and as long as you dont blink youll see the moment you start to flinch. With a dot you can be so precise that youll notice little things like before the first shot the dot is nice and steady but after it bounces a little. Best bet is to keep shooting. Or practice with a brutal pistol like the db9 by diamondback. If you master that lil gun all others seem tame

Revolvers are great for anticipation training, alternation at different intervals empty shells and live rounds.

When I dry fire I don't jerk the gun because obviously I know it won't go bang. And I know the gun isn't gonna hurt me but when I shoot live have caught myself pushing forward and down. So much so that now I stack the sights like a pyramid rear 2 on bottom and the front sight between but on top. And my knee jerk reaction puts the rounds where I wanted them. But it's so slight idk why I csnt just fix it and shoot right!!! And I know it's me and not the sights because I've caught myself doing it during a misfire when I expect a bang

SAME. I nail it dry firing all the time…but the moment my head knows there’s a live round….it panics.

You ever get this hammered out? After 300-400 rounds I'm starting to dread going to the range. It's really demotivating.

ive shot around 10,000 rounds of handgun ammunition and ive tried drills but im still anticipating recoil. Im not nervous or scared about the gun. Im very confident in the mechanics that i have i just keep anticipating it. Might the thousands of hourse of anticipating recoil and adjusting for it on fps games but idk if thats a far stretch or not.

Correct, because you may be a superb shooter with air pistols or 22's and still be unable to hit a refrigerator with a 40 S&W from 15 meters.
I am very used to 38 SPL but when I use 45 or 40 I anticipate much more.
I will try to shoot more 357's just to make 40s less intimidating.
Since I don't live on a free country, despite my president's efforts, I am not sure if I will test it so soon.

it's not a timing issue, these people are dullards, ignore them. the truth is, early or late, you shouldn't be pushing the gun at all.
you aren't choosing to lurch the gun forward and down "early," what you're doing is FAILING to brace the gun successfully.
you should brace the gun (using your support hand pressure to enforce the meetup between your firing hand web and the backstrap)
as you punch the gun out and grab your sights. some people use a "push-pull" with their arms, some people (better shooters) master this with their grip.
the gun is going to recoil. it's going to recoil no matter how hard you drive it down, and it's VERY EASY to overdrive the gun such that your shots start stringing low.
so don't! stop driving the gun down, brace it with the webbing of your firing hand to keep it from moving back, allow it to move up, and hold it such that it settles back onto the target.
