I was super into this till I saw the SoC and the price, one of those two things needs to change to make this a viable product. Also would like to know if it supports a display out, would love a device like this with a more powerful SoC and support for an external display.
@@farishanafiah8461 Well I'd say its not super usable performance wise if even Anthony was saying the SoC is hampering the experience. If linux is gonna be more main stream it needs to not be barely functional, or just "good enough". Consumers want something that is pleasant to use.
It's all depends on what Linux with what DE you will use on it. You can always install a distro of your choice and rearange the interface. I don't know how gestures will work, but this tablet is for people who want a Linux tablet. Comparing it to iPad is not fair since iPad has propertiary OS made for the device. And perfecting the experience took years and lots of money. This is a new product with FOSS operating system and software. It needs some time to mature like System76 products.
for a first gen product, not too bad. some software polish (maybe working w/ the plasma team for tighter integration), better power management and a more powerful soc and a 2nd or 3rd gen product might be a great daily driver if you want a tablet w/ a little more
Also, most Linux power users have no problems when dealing with janky experiences. I'm giving that in exchange for a more powerful terminal and I'm happy with it.
Yeah, but if you go Apple you get the powerful terminal and it's not janky experience. Sometimes I wonder if Linux users just don't know that OS X has bash, zsh, and basically the full suite of GNU/BSD utilities (some out of the box, others through MacPorts and Homebrew) under the hood. These days as long as it doesn't depend on X11, you can probably build it for MacOS.
@gilkesisking That's the thing, even if the "geniuses" don't know what it is, it's all there. Out of the box. Even vim. You can turn on the sshd server, even. Not sure what you mean by "access to the system" though. Can you be more specific? I used Linux exclusively as my daily from 1995 to like 2010 and don't feel limited in macOS. A lot of the things you might need access to 'the system' for in Linux are simply not necessary on MacOS. Like you don't have to worry about drivers, for example. You would never need to recompile a kernel. I can start and stop services from the terminal. I can manage a whole suite of packages with macports or homebrew from the commandline. What else do you need?
booted up my linux dual boot the other day and almost cried from how much better it was xD and that's with me installing kali like an idiot. Even broken, linux is far less of a hassle, far faster, and far cleaner to use. id rather spend 3 hours stumbling in the dark and actually learning, than 3 hours being decieved about how much control I have over my computer

@@PKM1010 I switched 2 months ago from Windows to Pop OS and after 2 weeks to Manjaro. PopOS is easier and I havent had any issues with it. I prefer Manjaro because of I feel, the benefits of Arch and rolling release and not too much bloat paired with user friendlyness. Basically I used Pop OS to try out different Desktop environment and those things, once I knew what I wanted I went to Manjaro and installed my stuff. PopOS is easier IMO but 2 weeks for a first time linux desktop user isnt doesnt seem that bad (I did know basic BASH beforehand though)
I own tab s7+, its great device. Im a developer and spend most of my time at computer screen. When its time to relax i watch netflix, youtube or read on my tablet in bed. I also carry it around instead of laptop. I just remote connect to my work Desktop machine if needed. Its awesome for notes, hands down only non Apple tablet as responsive like pen and paper. Oled screen is awesome. And samsung dex is just a cherry on top. Edit: im actualy watching this video and writing this on my tablet.
Yeah I was like "ouch" when he said that Galaxy Tab bit. I have an S7 FE and it's great. Seems like a super fast tablet, with a nice big screen. And the official keyboard cover for it isn't bad. Makes a nice tablet to use relaxing at home and a nice little mobile workstation if you're using remote dev environments. For reading on the go, I have a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite which is a bit laggy but is super compact for reading on the bus and stuff.
I have a samsung tab s 7+ and these are actually amazing for note taking and drawing with the 120 hz. I think it would make a really good video because of your many ipad videos. Kinda like "Is this an actual competitor to the ipad?" With some ltt guy looking very confjsed In the thumbnail. Also the s pen can also hover (the pen is included)

Yeah, Samsung does a really good job with one UI on those tablets, especially if you're interested in productivity. Dex etc... I don't like Samsung phones very much, but I think their tablets are great. If you were a student or a teacher, you can get the tab S7 with $512 GB of storage for $460 bucks and they throw in a pair of Galaxy buds Pro.
Honestly I’d rather see you take a shot at installing a different distro as a follow up with this device. Would show the reason people would really want a Linux tablet over apple or android
@@ciscam actually it's not that easy. PCs are a very open platform with a standard BIOS or UEFI, and a standard processor. ARM devices aren't like that. You have to compile U-BOOT per device and sometimes need a modified kernel as well. Even if you get one tablet manufacturer who releases source code for their device it doesn't mean that it will work on another tablet, even one that has the same SoC. There's just a complete lack of standardisation and usually little to no vendor support. The most open source friendly SoC is of course the BCM one in Raspberry Pi devices but that SoC just isn't available in other suppliers tablets.
I saw a Linux Based Tablet + Anthony and im already here. One thing I woulda liked is a better Stylus. Only reason I would get a device like this is as a portable Sketchbook/Drawing pad + Entertainment device and a bad Pen Experience is pretty much a big No for me. That aside this is a very cool device, would def really like to see this product improve more, maybe have a few more companies throw their take on it.
On some video from JingLing (the manufacturer) I commented on the high latency in their video as well because I'm actually looking for a proper tablet running Linux to use for drawing (using Gimp, MyPaint, Krita or even Blender). They told me they are working on it. So maybe they can tweak the drivers to improve it further. It would definitely be awesome to see some Linux running hardware for artists.
Honestly, I've been testing the A1 running an Android rom, and with how the pen has been on Android with proper Hardware Acceleration, once full Hardware acceleration is working under Linux, I think it'll be much better!
As anthony said, the SoC that brings this down. I hope more Linux tables/phones will pop up in the upcoming years. Given that the whole thing is open source and developed by the community, it could give ppl a free, friendly and safe platform to work with.
@@utfigyii5987 ARM is a type of processor architecture. your PC is probably using x86, whereas most mobile devices use ARM, check online for more details on the differences.
Been saying this for a while, the Samsung galaxy tab s7 plus is an amazing tablet that you guys should have checked out. It's much better than an iPad in many many ways.
As one of the weirdos who actually likes Android tablets, I can confirm there is a version of Krita on Android, other than a weirdly thick top bar containing a single hamburger menu, and only being usable in landscape, it actually works really well.
JingOS itself seems to be where the real promise is. I'd love to see it loaded onto a better tablet(perhaps a surface even) to see how it performs and acts in comparison to an apple device.
This has so much potential! It seems already in a state where one can use it for some use cases very well. Once they ironed out some of the drawbacks this can really take off. A linux tablet proper would be awesome!
The Galaxy Tab is suprisingly good. Pretty nice Office apps and multitasking functionality with the keyboard is probably all a lot of people need. If I didnt need an IDE on my Laptop I could probably fully switch. But its also not for older people, since even with a mouse it's still just a touch cursor.
I've got a Tab, and it does what I want a tablet to be - a roughly page-sized display that I can read things on. I don't expect it to do heavy-lifting.
I also have a Tab. Been using various Tabs for about 6 years, and was great when I had surgery and couldn't sit at my computer. Now I use it to play a few games, but mostly use it as a stream deck for OBS.
I had the Galaxy tab S6 and i hated every minute of it. For me, it was just a large phone, and i am waaaaay happier with the ipad air. But your milage may vary
@@anyGould Exactly. For couch/bed-based content consumption, it works great. I don't rely on my tablet to do much else as either my phone is better for portable needs and my PC better for power needs. But neither gives me a 10" screen for browsing and reading while relaxing around the house.
@@riiobo That's because they're all larger phones, the iPad also used iPhone's OS for a long time, and even now iPadOS is almost the same in terms of app support, just a different UI and more multitasking capability, but you have something similar with Galaxy Tab in the form of Dex so... It's really a to each their own situation.
I sincerely believe that everyone interested in a career in technology should learn the basics of Linux. With the first 30-days being command prompt only. 😀 As a desktop replacement? I’m not quite as sold on it, but the nice thing about learning Linux is that you learn computers. Here’s my 2-cent “syllabus” 1) File Management -create files -create folders - copy, paste,directories, etc 2) Device Management - partition drives -formatting - install drivers 3) Services/Daemons - start and stop services - configure jobs 4) Networking - connect to networks - configure network services/addressing -DNS, etc 5) Install Applications That’s a 2-minute dump - so there’s more to it. However, those basics would be a start.
A few i teresting things about the tablet. 1. Because the soc is unexplored territory (like most weird arm SoCs) it only uses software rendering for the UI. This not only kills the performance but also the battery. Good thing is that at least with the new releases of Jing OS it does get fixed over time. 2. As for the price and recommending it to people... I myself as a Linux user probably wouldn't the way it is now at least. (unless you want to support Linux tablets) 3. (And this is more aimed at the company) they could try doing x86 emulation with box86 or maybe even android containerization via WayDroid. EDIT: OH WOW I did some research for a few minutes and found some things. First off features like screen rotation and split screen are coming. And there is also an update that should allow Android support(along with an early beta test image) It seems like most of these issues will be resolved in March 2022 and I hope by then Jing OS reaches 1.0(its now at 0.9.1)
Thx for looking all of this up. The SoC ist still gonna hold it back tho. With propper performance, even "just" a flagship Smartphone SoC, this would be a no brainer for me. I have a Surface Pro 7 for taking notes and such but the fact that the stylus doesn't work on Linux is really annoying. In hindsight I should have gotten a convertible from Lenovo or another brand with open drivers, but at the time I got it there were no equally good alternatives
@@arouraios4942 For me, the SoC could literally be the best on the market and it'd still be a no-go. Like Huawei, Unisoc is in direct control from the Chinese regime. The danger of having some malicious stuff built in is just too great for it to be a great experience, as far as I am concerned.
Damn I was actually sold on this thing until the price. This needed to be around $400-500 (mainly with that underpowered chip) for it to be viable. unless the next gen really upgrades the chip or significantly reduces the price, this is not going to make it here.
@@DarkSoul-ds2 I am far less concerned with the screen and resolution, at this size 720p would look fine IMO. But if it can't do the basic functions like I want at a reasonable pace, I'm not going to justify it. The pen is not an issue for me (although some it would be) the rotate isn't an issue (I can fix that with a script). The functionality and speed is by far and away my biggest focus for any tech equipment I buy/own.

To be completely fair Linux has never been marketed to do *this* - specifically Linux is lightyears ahead of other OSs in other areas but just not so much in the consumer sphere yet...
There's not much I cannot do with Linux. (Besides gaming? Which the steam deck is doing a lot to help with making it not an issue unless you want bleeding edge gaming) And it's evolving all the time. I wiped windows from my third and remaining computer the other night. It's nice to see a laptop that never had more than 4 gb of ram be able to utilize 7 out of 8. Improved battery times and therefore health/lifespan. I'm sure there's situations/circumstances that require one to use this or that platform for work or whatever but for personal use; it's just more efficient then windows is to me.

The vast majority of them do not have gaming capable graphics cards in them...in the massive Windows ecosystem, gaming is very much a niche market, despite it's social and cultural relevance among many people. Bro, the Galaxy Tab S7 Pro + is what got me to buy a tablet for the first time. My wife uses an iPad Pro and I catch her constantly using my Galaxy tablet. Says it looks better, sounds better, and DEX is an awesome feature.
Really impressive for a first gen tablet. I'm a huge linux fan, and it seems like itd be some fun, but ill have to pass on it until they have a more powerful version.
That whole setup they featured is also $899 for a WiFi model. Definitely a lot, considering it's a device from an unknown manufacturer. They didn't release the source code of the OS the tablet is running at all (they only have x86 0.9 version public, despite the tablet being on 1.1 already). So effectively if you break the OS you can't reinstall, the bootloader prevents you from installing other distros, and they claim absolutely no support in case of any software problems. Anthony is also the only reviewer I saw who tried to test the pressure sensitivity of the pen and it didn't work, which is not encouraging. I know his got slightly broken, but the fact that nobody else has shown the pressure working is... suspicious.
I can’t get over the fact that it’s such a naked rip off of the iPad Pro. The tablet, the keyboard, and the GUI are all cribbed straight from Apple. I’d just get an iPad if I wanted that style of design.
Today I installed Ubuntu on my old MacBook Pro, which has an insanely good display panel and overall good hardware (replaced the battery for like 20$) It just looks so great and smooth, even though the hardware is relatively old now...super happy. Edit: I have to mention this though: as a tech nerd, Ubuntu was one of the most enjoyable and fast installations I've ever had (installed from a USB Stick). Everything literally just started working, and the entire keyboard of my MacBook (even brightness level, app launcher and keyboard brightness) works super well without any need of tweaking stuff. Even my Logitech Bluetooth Mouse just started working WITHOUT any tweak...super impressed from that one. I might have been lucky, but I am pretty sure that the majority of the people out there, who care for technology, will have a good time installing Ubuntu. Edit 2: Installing VPNs on Ubuntu is by far the worst installation I have ever had. Kind of a deal breaker for me...already thinking about leaving.

This makes me want to research more about changing my tab S7’s OS to Linux. Maybe not right now as I'm still receiving updates, but when Samsung drops it maybe a good Linux distro for tablets might not be a bad option. The tab s7 was great for studying and taking notes, but since I'm starting some more serious things I've been seeing the drawbacks of Android for everyday use (mainly lacking some important software)
@@sokacsavok Of course of course, that doesn't many it has any of the functionalities though. What OS my device runs, or even what it's based on, matters little as long as I can do with it what I want to do with it. As far as I know I don't have the skills to make Linux x86 applications work in Android, so my best option still seems to be changing the OS.
I'd love to see this succeed, and I was seriously consider buying one to help work on the software, but it seems like there are some problems. The only thing they've actually published on their github is a 6 month old version with no ARM support, so you have no way of knowing what you're actually running if you download the latest build from their website... and you can't run your own software or customize anything (let alone contribute improved code back to the project, which they seem to need!). I've been using regular old Gnome on several x86 tablets for years, and the battery life they're claiming is no better than what I've always gotten on intel. That's more or less the main reason I'd like to switch to ARM so I'm not sure how this improves over any of the x86 tablets I already own
@@djr5759 no, I'm sure the actual build running on the device is native ARM, the problem is just that they haven't published any updated OS code in the main repo for six months, and the old version that's available is marked as not being ARM compatible
The samsung tab S7 is acutally quite nice and very similiar to the 2 of these tablets. It sounds like Anthony hasn't tested the S7 himself as the price and specs are exceptionally better.
@Rafał Tarka the s5e has almost the same screen, just a bit smaller. I know a friend who used one, would recommend. I use my S7+ to edit photos and watch videos when traveling
@@Tarets still has a really great screen, infact the only complaint is it doesn't dim enough for reading at night but I use a separate app to lower the gamma so it works
@@DominicKrall my s5e's main problem is that it is just a tad under spec'd, basically Samsung relies on their software, to correctly manage the memory usage rather than add a little more memory. Otherwise it is fantastic, and while I give apple their due on this, I simply didn't want to deal with the apple "way" of doing things that annoyed the stuffing out of me. (Happy Thanksgiving, btw)
This seems like a great option if you want to do programming on a tablet since you can run the full suite of programming tools and text editors that support Linux and, to my knowledge, iPadOS still doesn't support any IDEs. Sounds like it'd be useful for college students majoring in CompSci.
Protip for Anthony, rather than retyping `apt get install krita` with the sudo, you can just type `sudo !!` and it will re-run the last command appended to the sudo. (previous command is aliased as !! in bash)
I’d wait for that Tablet for a bit. They’ve got some software optimizations to do like better hardware acceleration or battery life improvement but hardware wise I think they’re actually doing pretty good!
@@simonjamesodell what kind of argument is that? We don't know the team behind it so there is no way of knowing how fast and with what quality those updates will come. I'm not buying something hoping it will become usable in an inestimable amount of time. You're buying the product in it's current state and it looks like it's just not there yet
The only problem is this is the mindset that will lead to bankruptcy before 3rd gen could ever go into production. Let's just hope they can survive until then off of hobbyists.
I just bought one yesterday knowing that the OS is still early days. They are working on making Android apps work in the coming months which if that happens and they get the OS devloped futher than I think it will make a great device for me. I have only used Linux for many years now and I currently am carrying a pinebook and a Galaxy Tab S4. I personally hope that this will be able to take place of both these devices at some point for me and I want to see more Linux devices like this be available with good user experiences so I am willing to put my money down and support this project with hopes for the future.
I've been looking at it for a while but haven't made the jump. Because I have a dilemma, I would love you're help and opinion on this. So for school just basic college classes. I want to code and learn to do it on the budget route for the time being and possibly install Linux. My two picks are the Think pad x220 or the Lenovo Chromebook Duet. See I already have a powerhouse computer that could possibly run it but I want to use that souly for gaming plus it's nice so I don't want to carry that around and have it damaged or stolen if you get me. I chose the Think pad because of the upgrade of parts, I think they're more powerful in general than chromebooks, and come with many great features! On the flip side I know with the Chromebook duet, Chrome OS is going to be more comfortable and be easier to work with and learn from. Also I like the integration with Google services and software support for a long time cause I have a pixel 6 and I'm a Avid user of checking emails and stuff so that kinda more seamless integration seems cool to me. Other than that both seem to play with Linux nicely so idk I'm torn might end up getting both and installing Linux on one of them.
@@micahjohnson9184Personally if your planning on learning to code I think the Thinkpad will be the better choice for working with the tools that will be needed. Chrome OS I used for awhile a few years ago with a Google Pixel Book but the Linux integration Google is working on is still, from what I have seen from other youtubers recently it is still not a smooth final product for running Linux software and will probably end up being more flustrating than anything. I have been learning to code in python and C over the last couple years for a project and I'd love to do some of it on my Android tablet, so I got a code editor and termux installed for a linux command line so I can run some tools but it really just doesn't work so thats why I also have a Pinebook Pro in my bag that I carry as well because you really do just need a full Linux desktop at times to do these tasks.
I wish they would have told you that the JingPad is lined up to have both the mobile OS, a desktop OS and Android apps natively. I agree, there are some things to work on - especially in the world of “conferencing” which is what a tablet does best.
when you keep saying "this is a very like Apple experience" but you forget to mention that most of the "Apple experience" in UI for iPad & MacOS is actually cloned from open source projects, specially the Gnome & KDE desktops!
I will say that Android tablets (pretty much only Samsung), especially this last year or so, have gotten a lot better and do provide good competition to iPads. There's some concerns with longevity compared to iPads, like performance in 2 years time will likely be considerably worse than a comparable iPad and iPads get around twice the major updates compared to Android devices, but for their price they are now a good option. I just wish Android was a smoother experience, which it is until the next Android version then it's another 6 months until that becomes smooth and then repeat.
Indeed, Android flagship tablets became really good. The price is my biggest consern, because Tab S7+ costs about the same as iPads. I'm very satisfied with the performance of Tab S7+, it can handle heavy workloads (for tablets, not PCs) seamlessly with Snap 865+ and 6Gb RAM. Can't say about longevity as I have mine for half a year, gotta check it when Android 12 update comes at January. Samsung DeX is just a beast, easily the best tablet feature there is. Didn't have any experience with it's Huawei counterpart, so can't say about companies other than Samsung. I'm really glad that SPen is included. On iPad it's like a $150 addition to the price and it's not even better than SPen (2048 pressure levels VS 4096 in SPen) and you don't need to charge it for it to function. Overall, it really hurts me that people don't consider Android tablets. I don't know what I'd do if Samsung just shut down their tablet lineup, so I'd be glad if reviewers gave more credit to Android tablets. Thankfully, 14" behemoth of Tab S8 Ultra is coming soon, so hopefully we'll see more coverage on it after release.
The Samsung tablets have been great for about 4 years. I know a lot of people who use them, I mean, why waste a ton of money on a device which for many people is nothing else than a portable video player. I actually like it more than my iPad for video, because there is no stupid unlocking or anything, just tap the screen twice and the video instantly starts playing.
@@iowawalker Samsung is notorious for having Apple-like MSRP and constant sales and discounts in practice. I caught one of these sales and got the S7 plus for roughly 400 taxes included. If you trade in as well they do have good tradein discounts sometimes. I think price-wise, the tab S'es are pretty much unbeatable value. My experience is in the US by the way. And I doubt other Android makers will compete. Note taking is unparalleled on the S7 because of the high refresh rate, which is a premium feature that I don't see any other brands pursuing. It's always just the cheap media consumption tablets. Oh, and the proprietary Samsung Notes app. I've taken books worth of notes to say this: no other app in the play store even come close. To topple the iPad they need a good, competent productivity ecosystem, and as long as Samsung can get other app makers on board I think they can be a serious contender.
Hopefully SteamOS 3 will attract enough users to force folks at adobe, go xlr, etc. to recognise and support linux. It can't be hard to port their software when adobe can support M1 macs in mere months after release, and MS office online can't possibly be running on windows server, I don't think microsoft trusts their own software enough to run their servers.

In a similar vein, I honestly really love the idea of Chromebooks. Mobile, super light, great battery life, touch screen, installs android apps, chrome apps, and linux apps all with very little hassle. I just wish there was a no-compromises Chromebook, and ALSO that android apps for Chromebooks worked well. The IDEA of that^ sounds almost like a perfect mobile programming station for me, as someone who does most of his heavy lifting on clusters in the cloud. But every time I actually sit down and try to get things working, I end up always either going back to my Macbook Air or to to my Lenovo with Manjaro installed.
I really really really want this to be good. As an engineering student, I’d love to be able to write notes with the pen and use the keyboard for papers and reports and then use the Linux side for code development. I would daily drive this if it turns out good
don't forget the ability to actually run your engineering software on it, the pine tab for example can run blender and many cad or other similar software like real video edit software. that is a great thing linux has over ardroid, not just the code side, but also that you can just run almost any desktop software on it.
@@ted_van_loon I am a computer engineering student, so coding covers a lot of what I would do. The other programs I use are for designing processor elements on my FPGA and my circuit simulation software. The FPGA software is very windows only and even then very buggy and pretty bad, but it is still the industry standard somehow. Aside from that one program, I feel something like this could do everything I do for most classes.
@@bobbyhinner3225 I know what you mean when I studied ICT, we had some industry standard software for PLCs, but both the software on those things and the computer software where unreliable and unstable. and the computer software also was windows only. half the time you was working with those plcs was fixing the computer software kind of(propetairy so not much space) since it wouldn't work properly. the plcs themselves also where not stable at all since you could not assume that the code you added would be executed properly and on time since they at random moments just decided to stop working . and all this while a arduino is more reliable(especially when using bitshifting), is faster, and a lot more support as well as being a lot cheaper even when you include the extra hardware to isolate the outputs. raspberry pi can be even more so, especially in speed and accuracy perhaps that one program runs through wine or similar.
The Galaxy Tabs like the Tab S7 / S7+ are actually quiet good. I my self actually have one, it runs as smooth as butter and using it for school with Samsung Notes also works great. ^^

Theres a lot of things to criticize about the Samsung Ecosystem, but as a decent competitor to the Apple Ipads, the Galaxy Tab S7/S7+ is probs the best youre gonna get for a while. Although theres been some interesting competition arising in the horizon. The Lenovo P11 Pro has pretty good performance for its price range. Nice screen too last I checked, hampered by awkward availability though. If you are fine with Foreign Tablets, the Xiamo Pad 5 is also an option, although the Pen on it is not as nicely built as the stated. I think Linux/Android Tablets still have a long way to go before the Software matches the Prowess of the Apple Ecosystem, but the Hardware is very easily available now and will bring some more interesting challengers to the Galaxy Tab Series.
Battery drain can be explained by the network (4G/5G etc) selector. My galaxy s21 elite drained from 85% to 40% in Just 4 hours, until I dissabled the 5G network (leaving 4G), now I can do almost 2x workdays of fulltime screentime (youtube, meetings, calls, etc) without recharging.
On the note of Samsung tablet you would be surprised how many people use them a day. I’m a truck driver and the company I drive for has a system in every truck that has one as a display interface for the driver. And I don’t know any driver who like them most would love to drive over them.
0:09 yes, people who do not live in the US and are not totally consumed by Apple buy those :D. I have a Galaxy Tab S4 and I love it. I wanted stereo sound, a good 16:10 display, and a headphone jack as it was supposed to replace my very old Nexus 10 tablet and the S4 fit the bill very well.
I own a Galaxy Tab S7 for about half a year now and i have to say i actually love it more than i expected and think they are seriously underrated these days, especially at their price point. I initially just bought it because i didn't need a new phone, but got a new device included with my provider every 2 years. And as I already have lots of Samsung stuff i decided to test it out. It's super responsive, 120hz display with variable refresh rate, the pen is amazingly fast (and also hovers!) and accurate for notes and the occasional sketch for work (I'm an architecture student), the screen is nice, the speakers are actually quite amazing and i never had any problems with it so far. It's light, fast and with the additional keyboard case even very useful for meetings and mails. After testing it out for some time now i have to say those are seriously overlooked and a very, very compelling alternative to the iPad (even the Pro), with great integration in the Samsung/Google cosmos with notes, calendars etc. It also has a nice battery runtime of at least 3-5 days depending on usecase which makes it extra useful for me who often just throws it in my backpack without looking for the battery percentage...
YES! I bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab s7 in August and I love it. I have even bought a cheap wireless controller for gameplay. What games you might ask, PSX emulator games ;)
Honestly, I'm waiting for when the PineNote is ready (or maybe even when there's a PineNote Pro, I already kinda regret getting the standard issue PinePhone after seeing what the Pro can do). I know it isn't exactly comparable, but I feel like that device will have a) better community support and b) more focused development when it comes to stylus use. And also, I just REALLY want an eInk tablet that can handle both reading and writing while also supporting all of my favourite programs from the Linux desktop.

Not to mention their absolute refusal to let people transfer files to and from their devices in a reasonable and practical way. Oh, and did I mention the subscription for their poor features?
What really bums me about these kinds of brands and products is that they rarely publish their source code even if they're technically required by the licenses. When the company inevitably ceases to exist, as those Chinese startups tend to, you are stuck with unsupported old mess...
Nah that's what life is like in proprietary-land. This is linux, you'll get free updates on whatever distro you want to run on it, for the lifetime of Linux.
@@simonjamesodell I highly doubt that, since those lesser known cheap Chinese SoC vendors like Allwinner, Rockchip or in this case Unisoc, have terrible track record of publishing up to date kernel drivers, or they usually don't publish no source code, so you are then stuck with precompiled old kernel with plenty of proprietary binary blobs. It may have gotten better in recent years and some vendors are trying to push their drivers into mainline kernel, but it's usually not 100% up there yet. New distro releases are worthless if you don't also have up to date kernel with drivers for your hardware.
700 dollars for a tablet with a processor that weak is highway robbery. Completely unexcusable. I love the idea of the thing, but it isn't even close to being worth the price of entry. You might as well buy a new old stock tablet with an older flagship snapdragon that's several times more powerful than this.
It's not "completely unexcusable". Companies like apple, Samsung, Xiaomi etc... are able to sell you devices at lower price because your data is being sold over time. The people who work for this company don't make any money except for selling the hardware.
Agreed. I love my Tab S7 for basic stuff, and something like this COULD be a great replacement for it - but the fact that this costs anywhere near something like a Tab S7 or iPad air is just crazy. I get that they need to make their money somewhere but the performance of the competition is insanely better than this at that price point.
@@qwerasdfhjkio Regardless of the reason, it's a horrible price. Selling a device for what its worth is not a huge ask when you have companies like Framework actively not selling you an operating system at all, if you like, and you can get a really nice laptop from them for a really reasonable price. Heck, the Odin and Odin Lite handhelds are much, much cheaper, and they come with significantly better hardware. Sure, it's not exactly the same type of device, but the point remains that you don't have to reach very far to find internals that are way better. They 100 percent skimped on the internals here, or at the very least spent the budget on other aspects of the device poorly.

Very happy with my Surface Pro with linux-surface installed (on Mint). Hovering pen, autorotate - everything except the IR cam works great. The best linux tablet in 2021 is still a Microsoft product. Go figure.
The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is $299 CAD, comes with a magnetic stand and keyboard and you can buy their stylus for $40 or any other USI stylus. It also has fantastic battery life. You can install and run android apps and use all the linux apps you want via their linux container. The only downside is the SOC is a little slow.
As someone who as of recently owns a modern Android tablet (Xiaomi Pad 5), I don't really get the hate. It's very smooth in every way: the software is polished, the UI is fine (it has been said that MIUI looks very much like iOS, FWIW), it's got an SD860 and a 120Hz screen. Oh, and it autorotates and has a decent mic. Actually, quad microphones; and quad speakers; and the display also supports HDR and DolbyAtmos; and it's about half the price of this thing, although it doesn't come with the pen and the keyboard in the box (but those two can be had for a combined total of like $150 if you shop around online and the pen is a lot better than what this tablet comes with, judging from the video). All of the apps I tried worked great, the experience in MS Office apps is a lot closer to desktop than to mobile and I even brought it to the office one day, plugged LAN in (via a generic USB-C dongle) and I was running Azure Data Factory in Firefox the same way I would on my 6 core Windows laptop (same layout, same functionality, same level of responsiveness). The battery goes on and on and the only thing missing is USB3 so that I could get an HDMI out (not sure if the tablet from the video has that, at $700 it darn should, but there is no mention of that anywhere). I'm also pretty sure you could install Linux on it and have a better Linux tablet for significantly less money compared to the one in the video. So, as I said, I don't get the hate. As for the device in this video, it's a decent try, but the whole thing is so unpolished (auto-rotate, microphone, battery drain, random UI glitches, janky pen...) and even the hardware is so and so (it's cool that it has an AMOLED, but the SoC is just meh) and it's not like it's cheap. I hope that they will stick around long enough to a) polish the software of this thing and b) release a gen two where I guess they'd apply the lessons learned.
Hahaha that tablet/pad you put on the keyboard so funny. Many years ago pc's were all the rage then laptops came out and people complained the screens/machines were too small, so the screens on laptops got bigger. Then came out the iPad with a smaller screen than any laptop at the time - everyone wanted one, apart from me. Shortly after they realised they would do better with a keyboard and mouse - wholla, Apple reinvented the wheel and a small screen laptop was thus created.
Been using a Galaxy Tab S2 for ages now, and replaced it with a Tab S5e last year leaving the S2 for my mom, which is still working great for the basic stuff.... It's... pretty awesome. Here's the thing I don't get: The audio on the S5e is just bonkers. Other than very expensive top of the line laptops, I don't think I've ever heard audio this well executed. Heck, I have a sort of expensive (very expensive for Brazilian standards) middle of the line albeit a bit old gamer Asus Predator with a 1660 graphics card that has absolute sh*t speakers in comparison to the Tab S5e. How can the laptop speakers be this bad when it not only costs way more but also has way more space to put something beefier in there? I got pretty spoiled by it. The Tab S2, despite being bottom firing speaker.... is still better than the laptop's speaker somehow. The only problem is not being very loud, so it's only good for quiet environments. On this tablet... yeah, looks way better than I expected for a Linux tablet, honestly. Still kinda jank, but seeing all previous attempts at shoving some Linux distro on a tablet/smartphone device, this one looks pretty ok.
I know I live in the States but I have a small Sony speaker (mine is a SRS-XB12, now the newer model is out SRS-XB13 but they appear to be pretty much the same) with its own power supply built in and either Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack connection options. It is obviously not stereo but it sounds great for such a small speaker. That might help with the poor quality sound from your laptop (my laptops have shitty sound as well). If you mainly use your laptop at your desk a good amplified speaker system with subwoofer would be even better (I have an old Genius 2.1 speaker system at my desk for my computer, it is no longer manufactured which is actually too bad as it is an excellent speaker system but several good brands are available including updated systems from Genius).
I have both the Tab S5e and the Huawei Mediapad M10 and they both have fantastic audio for a tablet thanks to 4 speakers that are properly factory tuned by well known audio companies. I got the Mediapad first and it blew away every other Android tablet's audio I'd heard by a huge margin. The Tab S5e was on offer, so I snapped it up and it's impressively thin and light, but I still have a soft spot for the Mediapad cos it was my first experience of top quality speaker audio on a portable computer.
Android is a very watered down version and not the same thing as the operating system on this tablet.KDE Plasma Mobile is not the same thing as what Samsung customized for Android.
PFFT! I had the first big box Linux tablet (well PDA) way back in 2001 with the Sharp Zaurus SL5000D... These days you can run it on practically any (Android) tablet using Andronix or Linux Deploy. A decent tablet should have no problem running most distros. I even run Arch on an old Chinese crap tab. Chromebooks: ChromiumOS (and by extension ChromeOS) IS a Linux distro. Granted up until a few years ago you weren't able to access anything Linux specific. But now Crostini on ChromeOS creates a Debian container to run Linux apps. Or if you really want that "Pure Linux" feel, you could always install Crouton on a Chromebook.
Makes me recall my old Sharp Zaurus device. Linux based it was a mini laptop and the screen could be rotated to make a (rather thick) tablet too. Probably the coolest tech product I’ve ever owned (probably 20 yeas ago), and I actually still have it.
I genuinely know no one with an iPad over here in Northern Europe, basically anyone who has a tablet has a Samsung, Lenovo or Huawei running on Android. Apple really doesn't have that big of a market share as you claim in your initial statement.
I'm told China hasn't adopted ipad either. For some reason apple still has a cult status this side the pond, and they charge a lofty premium. Funny side story, our former alleged president banned Huawei here in U.S.
@@stevejohnson1321 Oh yeah your 'side story' affected us over here as well. I used to work customer service/sales for a telecom operator and sold the aforementioned tablet brands. I always had the tell the caveat about the Huawei tablets that they didn't come with Google Play Store and you might have trouble installing all the apps you want.
I have a Galaxy Tab S6. I bought it becaue it's a lot cheaper than an iPad, and feels better than the ageing Air 2 that I had. It also has a really nice stylus that I use to draw on it.
That remark about Android tablets being only for old people with that old-ass android tablet picture is just complete ignorance that I would expect from a casual/fashion tech youtuber, the kind that reviews their favorite iPhone cases, not from LTT. You clearly have not seen a Samsung tablet in at least 3-4 years. Which is a shame, because they are great. The app situation is still not the best, but it has at least as many advantages as disadvantages over iPadOS. Especially the Samsung extras. And there is the upcoming Android 12L. There were like 10 videos about iPads in the last year, maybe you could squeeze in one about Android/Samsung tablets as well, just to escape being this one-sided.

Even the company Linux guru can only demonstrate how difficult linux is to use as a daily driver, I love it. even though he knows what to do when something doesn't work, it's an example of how often things still do go wrong even for people that know what they're doing
On tablet, sure. That still needs a lot of development. Desktop Linux? That's a different story and depends on several things like hardware and what people need to do with it. Lots of people have very smooth experiences using Linux as a daily driver. I migrated solely to Linux pretty quickly after trying it. I've had good experiences helping others, including my parents, switch over with no issues whatsoever for their simple needs. It can be an excellent daily driver with no issues whatsoever just as there can be problems. For those interested in it, it's worth trying to find out.

@@farishanafiah8461 Well I'd say its not super usable performance wise if even Anthony was saying the SoC is hampering the experience. If linux is gonna be more main stream it needs to not be barely functional, or just "good enough". Consumers want something that is pleasant to use.
It's all depends on what Linux with what DE you will use on it. You can always install a distro of your choice and rearange the interface. I don't know how gestures will work, but this tablet is for people who want a Linux tablet. Comparing it to iPad is not fair since iPad has propertiary OS made for the device. And perfecting the experience took years and lots of money. This is a new product with FOSS operating system and software. It needs some time to mature like System76 products.

for a first gen product, not too bad. some software polish (maybe working w/ the plasma team for tighter integration), better power management and a more powerful soc and a 2nd or 3rd gen product might be a great daily driver if you want a tablet w/ a little more
Also, most Linux power users have no problems when dealing with janky experiences. I'm giving that in exchange for a more powerful terminal and I'm happy with it.

Yeah, but if you go Apple you get the powerful terminal and it's not janky experience. Sometimes I wonder if Linux users just don't know that OS X has bash, zsh, and basically the full suite of GNU/BSD utilities (some out of the box, others through MacPorts and Homebrew) under the hood. These days as long as it doesn't depend on X11, you can probably build it for MacOS.
I agree, i was not expecting this to be great as a first gen, but I think second gen, with better hardware and software will be better to recommend.

Not sure what you mean by "access to the system" though. Can you be more specific? I used Linux exclusively as my daily from 1995 to like 2010 and don't feel limited in macOS. A lot of the things you might need access to 'the system' for in Linux are simply not necessary on MacOS. Like you don't have to worry about drivers, for example. You would never need to recompile a kernel. I can start and stop services from the terminal. I can manage a whole suite of packages with macports or homebrew from the commandline. What else do you need?

believe me its not that hard i recommend you start with manjaro or pop os
booted up my linux dual boot the other day and almost cried from how much better it was xD
and that's with me installing kali like an idiot. Even broken, linux is far less of a hassle, far faster, and far cleaner to use.

@@PKM1010 I switched 2 months ago from Windows to Pop OS and after 2 weeks to Manjaro. PopOS is easier and I havent had any issues with it. I prefer Manjaro because of I feel, the benefits of Arch and rolling release and not too much bloat paired with user friendlyness. Basically I used Pop OS to try out different Desktop environment and those things, once I knew what I wanted I went to Manjaro and installed my stuff.
PopOS is easier IMO but 2 weeks for a first time linux desktop user isnt doesnt seem that bad (I did know basic BASH beforehand though)
I own tab s7+, its great device. Im a developer and spend most of my time at computer screen. When its time to relax i watch netflix, youtube or read on my tablet in bed. I also carry it around instead of laptop. I just remote connect to my work Desktop machine if needed. Its awesome for notes, hands down only non Apple tablet as responsive like pen and paper. Oled screen is awesome. And samsung dex is just a cherry on top.

Yeah I was like "ouch" when he said that Galaxy Tab bit. I have an S7 FE and it's great. Seems like a super fast tablet, with a nice big screen. And the official keyboard cover for it isn't bad. Makes a nice tablet to use relaxing at home and a nice little mobile workstation if you're using remote dev environments. For reading on the go, I have a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite which is a bit laggy but is super compact for reading on the bus and stuff.

I have a samsung tab s 7+ and these are actually amazing for note taking and drawing with the 120 hz. I think it would make a really good video because of your many ipad videos. Kinda like "Is this an actual competitor to the ipad?" With some ltt guy looking very confjsed In the thumbnail. Also the s pen can also hover (the pen is included)

Yeah, Samsung does a really good job with one UI on those tablets, especially if you're interested in productivity. Dex etc... I don't like Samsung phones very much, but I think their tablets are great. If you were a student or a teacher, you can get the tab S7 with $512 GB of storage for $460 bucks and they throw in a pair of Galaxy buds Pro.
Honestly I’d rather see you take a shot at installing a different distro as a follow up with this device. Would show the reason people would really want a Linux tablet over apple or android

@@Anankin12 Of course you can. But an ARM tablet is something of an unprecedented platform for linux, so it's pretty interesting.
@@ciscam actually it's not that easy. PCs are a very open platform with a standard BIOS or UEFI, and a standard processor. ARM devices aren't like that. You have to compile U-BOOT per device and sometimes need a modified kernel as well. Even if you get one tablet manufacturer who releases source code for their device it doesn't mean that it will work on another tablet, even one that has the same SoC. There's just a complete lack of standardisation and usually little to no vendor support. The most open source friendly SoC is of course the BCM one in Raspberry Pi devices but that SoC just isn't available in other suppliers tablets.

One thing I woulda liked is a better Stylus. Only reason I would get a device like this is as a portable Sketchbook/Drawing pad + Entertainment device and a bad Pen Experience is pretty much a big No for me.
That aside this is a very cool device, would def really like to see this product improve more, maybe have a few more companies throw their take on it.
On some video from JingLing (the manufacturer) I commented on the high latency in their video as well because I'm actually looking for a proper tablet running Linux to use for drawing (using Gimp, MyPaint, Krita or even Blender). They told me they are working on it. So maybe they can tweak the drivers to improve it further.
It would definitely be awesome to see some Linux running hardware for artists.

Honestly, I've been testing the A1 running an Android rom, and with how the pen has been on Android with proper Hardware Acceleration, once full Hardware acceleration is working under Linux, I think it'll be much better!

As anthony said, the SoC that brings this down. I hope more Linux tables/phones will pop up in the upcoming years. Given that the whole thing is open source and developed by the community, it could give ppl a free, friendly and safe platform to work with.

Been saying this for a while, the Samsung galaxy tab s7 plus is an amazing tablet that you guys should have checked out. It's much better than an iPad in many many ways.
It is in many ways but overall all iPad is much better as a package unless you need a bigger

I can confirm there is a version of Krita on Android, other than a weirdly thick top bar containing a single hamburger menu, and only being usable in landscape, it actually works really well.

Unlike this device, the Librem 5 actually runs on a Linux version somewhat close to upstream and not ancient Linux + proprietary Android drivers.
JingOS itself seems to be where the real promise is. I'd love to see it loaded onto a better tablet(perhaps a surface even) to see how it performs and acts in comparison to an apple device.
This has so much potential! It seems already in a state where one can use it for some use cases very well. Once they ironed out some of the drawbacks this can really take off. A linux tablet proper would be awesome!
The Galaxy Tab is suprisingly good. Pretty nice Office apps and multitasking functionality with the keyboard is probably all a lot of people need. If I didnt need an IDE on my Laptop I could probably fully switch. But its also not for older people, since even with a mouse it's still just a touch cursor.
I've got a Tab, and it does what I want a tablet to be - a roughly page-sized display that I can read things on. I don't expect it to do heavy-lifting.
I also have a Tab. Been using various Tabs for about 6 years, and was great when I had surgery and couldn't sit at my computer. Now I use it to play a few games, but mostly use it as a stream deck for OBS.
I had the Galaxy tab S6 and i hated every minute of it. For me, it was just a large phone, and i am waaaaay happier with the ipad air. But your milage may vary
@@anyGould Exactly. For couch/bed-based content consumption, it works great. I don't rely on my tablet to do much else as either my phone is better for portable needs and my PC better for power needs. But neither gives me a 10" screen for browsing and reading while relaxing around the house.
@@riiobo That's because they're all larger phones, the iPad also used iPhone's OS for a long time, and even now iPadOS is almost the same in terms of app support, just a different UI and more multitasking capability, but you have something similar with Galaxy Tab in the form of Dex so... It's really a to each their own situation.

As a desktop replacement? I’m not quite as sold on it, but the nice thing about learning Linux is that you learn computers.

That’s a 2-minute dump - so there’s more to it. However, those basics would be a start.

I feel it would benefit this channel greatly to have Linus spend a week enjoying the delights of this curious device.
A few i teresting things about the tablet.
1. Because the soc is unexplored territory (like most weird arm SoCs) it only uses software rendering for the UI. This not only kills the performance but also the battery. Good thing is that at least with the new releases of Jing OS it does get fixed over time.
2. As for the price and recommending it to people... I myself as a Linux user probably wouldn't the way it is now at least. (unless you want to support Linux tablets)
3. (And this is more aimed at the company) they could try doing x86 emulation with box86 or maybe even android containerization via WayDroid.
EDIT: OH WOW I did some research for a few minutes and found some things.
First off features like screen rotation and split screen are coming. And there is also an update that should allow Android support(along with an early beta test image)
It seems like most of these issues will be resolved in March 2022 and I hope by then Jing OS reaches 1.0(its now at 0.9.1)

The SoC ist still gonna hold it back tho. With propper performance, even "just" a flagship Smartphone SoC, this would be a no brainer for me. I have a Surface Pro 7 for taking notes and such but the fact that the stylus doesn't work on Linux is really annoying.
In hindsight I should have gotten a convertible from Lenovo or another brand with open drivers, but at the time I got it there were no equally good alternatives
@@arouraios4942 For me, the SoC could literally be the best on the market and it'd still be a no-go. Like Huawei, Unisoc is in direct control from the Chinese regime. The danger of having some malicious stuff built in is just too great for it to be a great experience, as far as I am concerned.
Damn I was actually sold on this thing until the price. This needed to be around $400-500 (mainly with that underpowered chip) for it to be viable.
unless the next gen really upgrades the chip or significantly reduces the price, this is not going to make it here.

But if it can't do the basic functions like I want at a reasonable pace, I'm not going to justify it.
The pen is not an issue for me (although some it would be) the rotate isn't an issue (I can fix that with a script).
The functionality and speed is by far and away my biggest focus for any tech equipment I buy/own.

Yes, I would love to see more Linux devices and tablets too, Anthony! Maybe someday Linux will be ready to do the job. After ALL this time, it really sucks that it is not there yet.
To be completely fair Linux has never been marketed to do *this* - specifically Linux is lightyears ahead of other OSs in other areas but just not so much in the consumer sphere yet...
There's not much I cannot do with Linux. (Besides gaming? Which the steam deck is doing a lot to help with making it not an issue unless you want bleeding edge gaming) And it's evolving all the time. I wiped windows from my third and remaining computer the other night. It's nice to see a laptop that never had more than 4 gb of ram be able to utilize 7 out of 8. Improved battery times and therefore health/lifespan. I'm sure there's situations/circumstances that require one to use this or that platform for work or whatever but for personal use; it's just more efficient then windows is to me.
Windows seems to be primarily a gaming platform these days.

Bro, the Galaxy Tab S7 Pro + is what got me to buy a tablet for the first time. My wife uses an iPad Pro and I catch her constantly using my Galaxy tablet. Says it looks better, sounds better, and DEX is an awesome feature.

Really impressive for a first gen tablet. I'm a huge linux fan, and it seems like itd be some fun, but ill have to pass on it until they have a more powerful version.
That whole setup they featured is also $899 for a WiFi model. Definitely a lot, considering it's a device from an unknown manufacturer. They didn't release the source code of the OS the tablet is running at all (they only have x86 0.9 version public, despite the tablet being on 1.1 already). So effectively if you break the OS you can't reinstall, the bootloader prevents you from installing other distros, and they claim absolutely no support in case of any software problems. Anthony is also the only reviewer I saw who tried to test the pressure sensitivity of the pen and it didn't work, which is not encouraging. I know his got slightly broken, but the fact that nobody else has shown the pressure working is... suspicious.
700$ can get a more capable device , the hardware is underwhelming.
I'd rather buy a surface and install linux than this. The hardware is kinda awful for that price.
I can’t get over the fact that it’s such a naked rip off of the iPad Pro. The tablet, the keyboard, and the GUI are all cribbed straight from Apple. I’d just get an iPad if I wanted that style of design.
Today I installed Ubuntu on my old MacBook Pro, which has an insanely good display panel and overall good hardware (replaced the battery for like 20$)
It just looks so great and smooth, even though the hardware is relatively old now...super happy.
Edit: I have to mention this though: as a tech nerd, Ubuntu was one of the most enjoyable and fast installations I've ever had (installed from a USB Stick).
Everything literally just started working, and the entire keyboard of my MacBook (even brightness level, app launcher and keyboard brightness) works super well without any need of tweaking stuff.
Even my Logitech Bluetooth Mouse just started working WITHOUT any tweak...super impressed from that one.
I might have been lucky, but I am pretty sure that the majority of the people out there, who care for technology, will have a good time installing Ubuntu.
Edit 2: Installing VPNs on Ubuntu is by far the worst installation I have ever had. Kind of a deal breaker for me...already thinking about leaving.

This is the use case that Linux absolutely dominates. It is the best OS for older hardware. For gaming as of now, not so much

This makes me want to research more about changing my tab S7’s OS to Linux. Maybe not right now as I'm still receiving updates, but when Samsung drops it maybe a good Linux distro for tablets might not be a bad option. The tab s7 was great for studying and taking notes, but since I'm starting some more serious things I've been seeing the drawbacks of Android for everyday use (mainly lacking some important software)

What OS my device runs, or even what it's based on, matters little as long as I can do with it what I want to do with it. As far as I know I don't have the skills to make Linux x86 applications work in Android, so my best option still seems to be changing the OS.

I'd love to see this succeed, and I was seriously consider buying one to help work on the software, but it seems like there are some problems. The only thing they've actually published on their github is a 6 month old version with no ARM support, so you have no way of knowing what you're actually running if you download the latest build from their website... and you can't run your own software or customize anything (let alone contribute improved code back to the project, which they seem to need!). I've been using regular old Gnome on several x86 tablets for years, and the battery life they're claiming is no better than what I've always gotten on intel. That's more or less the main reason I'd like to switch to ARM so I'm not sure how this improves over any of the x86 tablets I already own
@@djr5759 no, I'm sure the actual build running on the device is native ARM, the problem is just that they haven't published any updated OS code in the main repo for six months, and the old version that's available is marked as not being ARM compatible
I own a JingPad and follow every updates about JingLing. It seems they will open the source code in the next few days

The samsung tab S7 is acutally quite nice and very similiar to the 2 of these tablets. It sounds like Anthony hasn't tested the S7 himself as the price and specs are exceptionally better.
The S7+ has the specs of a flagship phone, is thinner than most, epic screen and amazing speakers. Hope they do a video on one

@Rafał Tarka the s5e has almost the same screen, just a bit smaller. I know a friend who used one, would recommend. I use my S7+ to edit photos and watch videos when traveling
@@Tarets still has a really great screen, infact the only complaint is it doesn't dim enough for reading at night but I use a separate app to lower the gamma so it works
@@DominicKrall my s5e's main problem is that it is just a tad under spec'd, basically Samsung relies on their software, to correctly manage the memory usage rather than add a little more memory. Otherwise it is fantastic, and while I give apple their due on this, I simply didn't want to deal with the apple "way" of doing things that annoyed the stuffing out of me. (Happy Thanksgiving, btw)
This seems like a great option if you want to do programming on a tablet since you can run the full suite of programming tools and text editors that support Linux and, to my knowledge, iPadOS still doesn't support any IDEs. Sounds like it'd be useful for college students majoring in CompSci.
Protip for Anthony, rather than retyping `apt get install krita` with the sudo, you can just type `sudo !!` and it will re-run the last command appended to the sudo. (previous command is aliased as !! in bash)
I’d wait for that Tablet for a bit. They’ve got some software optimizations to do like better hardware acceleration or battery life improvement but hardware wise I think they’re actually doing pretty good!
Such upgrades will just come down the the update manager for free for the rest of the lifespan of Linux.
@@simonjamesodell what kind of argument is that? We don't know the team behind it so there is no way of knowing how fast and with what quality those updates will come. I'm not buying something hoping it will become usable in an inestimable amount of time. You're buying the product in it's current state and it looks like it's just not there yet
The only problem is this is the mindset that will lead to bankruptcy before 3rd gen could ever go into production. Let's just hope they can survive until then off of hobbyists.

I just bought one yesterday knowing that the OS is still early days. They are working on making Android apps work in the coming months which if that happens and they get the OS devloped futher than I think it will make a great device for me. I have only used Linux for many years now and I currently am carrying a pinebook and a Galaxy Tab S4. I personally hope that this will be able to take place of both these devices at some point for me and I want to see more Linux devices like this be available with good user experiences so I am willing to put my money down and support this project with hopes for the future.
I am tempted to get a Galaxy Tab S4 as well. Maybe a Tab S6 if I can find one cheap enough.
I've been looking at it for a while but haven't made the jump. Because I have a dilemma, I would love you're help and opinion on this. So for school just basic college classes. I want to code and learn to do it on the budget route for the time being and possibly install Linux. My two picks are the Think pad x220 or the Lenovo Chromebook Duet. See I already have a powerhouse computer that could possibly run it but I want to use that souly for gaming plus it's nice so I don't want to carry that around and have it damaged or stolen if you get me. I chose the Think pad because of the upgrade of parts, I think they're more powerful in general than chromebooks, and come with many great features! On the flip side I know with the Chromebook duet, Chrome OS is going to be more comfortable and be easier to work with and learn from. Also I like the integration with Google services and software support for a long time cause I have a pixel 6 and I'm a Avid user of checking emails and stuff so that kinda more seamless integration seems cool to me. Other than that both seem to play with Linux nicely so idk I'm torn might end up getting both and installing Linux on one of them.
@@micahjohnson9184Personally if your planning on learning to code I think the Thinkpad will be the better choice for working with the tools that will be needed. Chrome OS I used for awhile a few years ago with a Google Pixel Book but the Linux integration Google is working on is still, from what I have seen from other youtubers recently it is still not a smooth final product for running Linux software and will probably end up being more flustrating than anything. I have been learning to code in python and C over the last couple years for a project and I'd love to do some of it on my Android tablet, so I got a code editor and termux installed for a linux command line so I can run some tools but it really just doesn't work so thats why I also have a Pinebook Pro in my bag that I carry as well because you really do just need a full Linux desktop at times to do these tasks.

when you keep saying "this is a very like Apple experience" but you forget to mention that most of the "Apple experience" in UI for iPad & MacOS is actually cloned from open source projects, specially the Gnome & KDE desktops!
You need to setup pressure sensitivity both in preferences and in the specific brush settings (pressure dynamics setting) in GIMP
I will say that Android tablets (pretty much only Samsung), especially this last year or so, have gotten a lot better and do provide good competition to iPads. There's some concerns with longevity compared to iPads, like performance in 2 years time will likely be considerably worse than a comparable iPad and iPads get around twice the major updates compared to Android devices, but for their price they are now a good option. I just wish Android was a smoother experience, which it is until the next Android version then it's another 6 months until that becomes smooth and then repeat.
Indeed, Android flagship tablets became really good. The price is my biggest consern, because Tab S7+ costs about the same as iPads. I'm very satisfied with the performance of Tab S7+, it can handle heavy workloads (for tablets, not PCs) seamlessly with Snap 865+ and 6Gb RAM. Can't say about longevity as I have mine for half a year, gotta check it when Android 12 update comes at January. Samsung DeX is just a beast, easily the best tablet feature there is. Didn't have any experience with it's Huawei counterpart, so can't say about companies other than Samsung. I'm really glad that SPen is included. On iPad it's like a $150 addition to the price and it's not even better than SPen (2048 pressure levels VS 4096 in SPen) and you don't need to charge it for it to function. Overall, it really hurts me that people don't consider Android tablets. I don't know what I'd do if Samsung just shut down their tablet lineup, so I'd be glad if reviewers gave more credit to Android tablets. Thankfully, 14" behemoth of Tab S8 Ultra is coming soon, so hopefully we'll see more coverage on it after release.
The Samsung tablets have been great for about 4 years. I know a lot of people who use them, I mean, why waste a ton of money on a device which for many people is nothing else than a portable video player. I actually like it more than my iPad for video, because there is no stupid unlocking or anything, just tap the screen twice and the video instantly starts playing.
@@iowawalker Samsung is notorious for having Apple-like MSRP and constant sales and discounts in practice. I caught one of these sales and got the S7 plus for roughly 400 taxes included. If you trade in as well they do have good tradein discounts sometimes. I think price-wise, the tab S'es are pretty much unbeatable value. My experience is in the US by the way.
And I doubt other Android makers will compete. Note taking is unparalleled on the S7 because of the high refresh rate, which is a premium feature that I don't see any other brands pursuing. It's always just the cheap media consumption tablets. Oh, and the proprietary Samsung Notes app. I've taken books worth of notes to say this: no other app in the play store even come close. To topple the iPad they need a good, competent productivity ecosystem, and as long as Samsung can get other app makers on board I think they can be a serious contender.
Linux is never the answer. It is the question and the answer is "Yes!"
I wish that I could use Linux as my daily driver, but since I primarily use my PCs for Gaming, and the adobe suit it would only be an inconvenience.
Maybe it's time for an open source streamlined alternative to the Adobe Suite that can run on Linux and MS + Apple. :)
That's why I'm dualbooting, I can slowly learn Linux while not loosing any of the features that it doesn't have yet
I think having a primary machine with windows and then having a dual boot setup into Linux to mess around with that would be the play
Hopefully SteamOS 3 will attract enough users to force folks at adobe, go xlr, etc. to recognise and support linux.
It can't be hard to port their software when adobe can support M1 macs in mere months after release, and MS office online can't possibly be running on windows server, I don't think microsoft trusts their own software enough to run their servers.
It's ok, use the right tool for the job. You can enjoy WSL2 for Linux productivity if you want.

In a similar vein, I honestly really love the idea of Chromebooks. Mobile, super light, great battery life, touch screen, installs android apps, chrome apps, and linux apps all with very little hassle.
I just wish there was a no-compromises Chromebook, and ALSO that android apps for Chromebooks worked well. The IDEA of that^ sounds almost like a perfect mobile programming station for me, as someone who does most of his heavy lifting on clusters in the cloud. But every time I actually sit down and try to get things working, I end up always either going back to my Macbook Air or to to my Lenovo with Manjaro installed.
Dang, not bad. I hope they keep improving these as I would love a proper Linux tablet (having access to the terminal? Heck yeah) to play around with.
I really really really want this to be good. As an engineering student, I’d love to be able to write notes with the pen and use the keyboard for papers and reports and then use the Linux side for code development. I would daily drive this if it turns out good
don't forget the ability to actually run your engineering software on it, the pine tab for example can run blender and many cad or other similar software like real video edit software. that is a great thing linux has over ardroid, not just the code side, but also that you can just run almost any desktop software on it.
@@ted_van_loon I am a computer engineering student, so coding covers a lot of what I would do. The other programs I use are for designing processor elements on my FPGA and my circuit simulation software. The FPGA software is very windows only and even then very buggy and pretty bad, but it is still the industry standard somehow. Aside from that one program, I feel something like this could do everything I do for most classes.
@@bobbyhinner3225 I know what you mean when I studied ICT, we had some industry standard software for PLCs, but both the software on those things and the computer software where unreliable and unstable. and the computer software also was windows only. half the time you was working with those plcs was fixing the computer software kind of(propetairy so not much space) since it wouldn't work properly. the plcs themselves also where not stable at all since you could not assume that the code you added would be executed properly and on time since they at random moments just decided to stop working . and all this while a arduino is more reliable(especially when using bitshifting), is faster, and a lot more support as well as being a lot cheaper even when you include the extra hardware to isolate the outputs. raspberry pi can be even more so, especially in speed and accuracy
perhaps that one program runs through wine or similar.

The Galaxy Tabs like the Tab S7 / S7+ are actually quiet good. I my self actually have one, it runs as smooth as butter and using it for school with Samsung Notes also works great. ^^

Theres a lot of things to criticize about the Samsung Ecosystem, but as a decent competitor to the Apple Ipads, the Galaxy Tab S7/S7+ is probs the best youre gonna get for a while. Although theres been some interesting competition arising in the horizon.
The Lenovo P11 Pro has pretty good performance for its price range. Nice screen too last I checked, hampered by awkward availability though.
If you are fine with Foreign Tablets, the Xiamo Pad 5 is also an option, although the Pen on it is not as nicely built as the stated.
I think Linux/Android Tablets still have a long way to go before the Software matches the Prowess of the Apple Ecosystem, but the Hardware is very easily available now and will bring some more interesting challengers to the Galaxy Tab Series.
Battery drain can be explained by the network (4G/5G etc) selector.
My galaxy s21 elite drained from 85% to 40% in Just 4 hours, until I dissabled the 5G network (leaving 4G), now I can do almost 2x workdays of fulltime screentime (youtube, meetings, calls, etc) without recharging.
On the note of Samsung tablet you would be surprised how many people use them a day. I’m a truck driver and the company I drive for has a system in every truck that has one as a display interface for the driver. And I don’t know any driver who like them most would love to drive over them.

0:09 yes, people who do not live in the US and are not totally consumed by Apple buy those :D. I have a Galaxy Tab S4 and I love it. I wanted stereo sound, a good 16:10 display, and a headphone jack as it was supposed to replace my very old Nexus 10 tablet and the S4 fit the bill very well.
HEY! i feel called out for having just bought a galaxy tab A7.
I own a Galaxy Tab S7 for about half a year now and i have to say i actually love it more than i expected and think they are seriously underrated these days, especially at their price point. I initially just bought it because i didn't need a new phone, but got a new device included with my provider every 2 years. And as I already have lots of Samsung stuff i decided to test it out. It's super responsive, 120hz display with variable refresh rate, the pen is amazingly fast (and also hovers!) and accurate for notes and the occasional sketch for work (I'm an architecture student), the screen is nice, the speakers are actually quite amazing and i never had any problems with it so far. It's light, fast and with the additional keyboard case even very useful for meetings and mails.
After testing it out for some time now i have to say those are seriously overlooked and a very, very compelling alternative to the iPad (even the Pro), with great integration in the Samsung/Google cosmos with notes, calendars etc. It also has a nice battery runtime of at least 3-5 days depending on usecase which makes it extra useful for me who often just throws it in my backpack without looking for the battery percentage...

Honestly, I'm waiting for when the PineNote is ready (or maybe even when there's a PineNote Pro, I already kinda regret getting the standard issue PinePhone after seeing what the Pro can do). I know it isn't exactly comparable, but I feel like that device will have a) better community support and b) more focused development when it comes to stylus use. And also, I just REALLY want an eInk tablet that can handle both reading and writing while also supporting all of my favourite programs from the Linux desktop.
I’m sure there are Linux devs that would love to take that off of you ;P

Not to mention their absolute refusal to let people transfer files to and from their devices in a reasonable and practical way. Oh, and did I mention the subscription for their poor features?
What really bums me about these kinds of brands and products is that they rarely publish their source code even if they're technically required by the licenses. When the company inevitably ceases to exist, as those Chinese startups tend to, you are stuck with unsupported old mess...
Nah that's what life is like in proprietary-land. This is linux, you'll get free updates on whatever distro you want to run on it, for the lifetime of Linux.
@@simonjamesodell I highly doubt that, since those lesser known cheap Chinese SoC vendors like Allwinner, Rockchip or in this case Unisoc, have terrible track record of publishing up to date kernel drivers, or they usually don't publish no source code, so you are then stuck with precompiled old kernel with plenty of proprietary binary blobs. It may have gotten better in recent years and some vendors are trying to push their drivers into mainline kernel, but it's usually not 100% up there yet.
New distro releases are worthless if you don't also have up to date kernel with drivers for your hardware.

I use the Samsung S7 tablet. I use it for taking notes and for drawing. It's honestly perfect for me.
700 dollars for a tablet with a processor that weak is highway robbery. Completely unexcusable. I love the idea of the thing, but it isn't even close to being worth the price of entry. You might as well buy a new old stock tablet with an older flagship snapdragon that's several times more powerful than this.

Companies like apple, Samsung, Xiaomi etc... are able to sell you devices at lower price because your data is being sold over time. The people who work for this company don't make any money except for selling the hardware.
Agreed. I love my Tab S7 for basic stuff, and something like this COULD be a great replacement for it - but the fact that this costs anywhere near something like a Tab S7 or iPad air is just crazy. I get that they need to make their money somewhere but the performance of the competition is insanely better than this at that price point.
@@qwerasdfhjkio Regardless of the reason, it's a horrible price. Selling a device for what its worth is not a huge ask when you have companies like Framework actively not selling you an operating system at all, if you like, and you can get a really nice laptop from them for a really reasonable price. Heck, the Odin and Odin Lite handhelds are much, much cheaper, and they come with significantly better hardware. Sure, it's not exactly the same type of device, but the point remains that you don't have to reach very far to find internals that are way better. They 100 percent skimped on the internals here, or at the very least spent the budget on other aspects of the device poorly.

Very happy with my Surface Pro with linux-surface installed (on Mint). Hovering pen, autorotate - everything except the IR cam works great. The best linux tablet in 2021 is still a Microsoft product. Go figure.
Because, quite ironically I think, x86/64 is more open.
The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is $299 CAD, comes with a magnetic stand and keyboard and you can buy their stylus for $40 or any other USI stylus. It also has fantastic battery life. You can install and run android apps and use all the linux apps you want via their linux container. The only downside is the SOC is a little slow.
As someone who as of recently owns a modern Android tablet (Xiaomi Pad 5), I don't really get the hate. It's very smooth in every way: the software is polished, the UI is fine (it has been said that MIUI looks very much like iOS, FWIW), it's got an SD860 and a 120Hz screen. Oh, and it autorotates and has a decent mic. Actually, quad microphones; and quad speakers; and the display also supports HDR and DolbyAtmos; and it's about half the price of this thing, although it doesn't come with the pen and the keyboard in the box (but those two can be had for a combined total of like $150 if you shop around online and the pen is a lot better than what this tablet comes with, judging from the video). All of the apps I tried worked great, the experience in MS Office apps is a lot closer to desktop than to mobile and I even brought it to the office one day, plugged LAN in (via a generic USB-C dongle) and I was running Azure Data Factory in Firefox the same way I would on my 6 core Windows laptop (same layout, same functionality, same level of responsiveness). The battery goes on and on and the only thing missing is USB3 so that I could get an HDMI out (not sure if the tablet from the video has that, at $700 it darn should, but there is no mention of that anywhere). I'm also pretty sure you could install Linux on it and have a better Linux tablet for significantly less money compared to the one in the video. So, as I said, I don't get the hate.
As for the device in this video, it's a decent try, but the whole thing is so unpolished (auto-rotate, microphone, battery drain, random UI glitches, janky pen...) and even the hardware is so and so (it's cool that it has an AMOLED, but the SoC is just meh) and it's not like it's cheap. I hope that they will stick around long enough to a) polish the software of this thing and b) release a gen two where I guess they'd apply the lessons learned.
Hahaha that tablet/pad you put on the keyboard so funny. Many years ago pc's were all the rage then laptops came out and people complained the screens/machines were too small, so the screens on laptops got bigger. Then came out the iPad with a smaller screen than any laptop at the time - everyone wanted one, apart from me. Shortly after they realised they would do better with a keyboard and mouse - wholla, Apple reinvented the wheel and a small screen laptop was thus created.
Been using a Galaxy Tab S2 for ages now, and replaced it with a Tab S5e last year leaving the S2 for my mom, which is still working great for the basic stuff....
It's... pretty awesome.
Here's the thing I don't get: The audio on the S5e is just bonkers. Other than very expensive top of the line laptops, I don't think I've ever heard audio this well executed.
Heck, I have a sort of expensive (very expensive for Brazilian standards) middle of the line albeit a bit old gamer Asus Predator with a 1660 graphics card that has absolute sh*t speakers in comparison to the Tab S5e. How can the laptop speakers be this bad when it not only costs way more but also has way more space to put something beefier in there?
I got pretty spoiled by it.
The Tab S2, despite being bottom firing speaker.... is still better than the laptop's speaker somehow. The only problem is not being very loud, so it's only good for quiet environments.
On this tablet... yeah, looks way better than I expected for a Linux tablet, honestly. Still kinda jank, but seeing all previous attempts at shoving some Linux distro on a tablet/smartphone device, this one looks pretty ok.
I know I live in the States but I have a small Sony speaker (mine is a SRS-XB12, now the newer model is out SRS-XB13 but they appear to be pretty much the same) with its own power supply built in and either Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack connection options. It is obviously not stereo but it sounds great for such a small speaker. That might help with the poor quality sound from your laptop (my laptops have shitty sound as well). If you mainly use your laptop at your desk a good amplified speaker system with subwoofer would be even better (I have an old Genius 2.1 speaker system at my desk for my computer, it is no longer manufactured which is actually too bad as it is an excellent speaker system but several good brands are available including updated systems from Genius).
I have both the Tab S5e and the Huawei Mediapad M10 and they both have fantastic audio for a tablet thanks to 4 speakers that are properly factory tuned by well known audio companies. I got the Mediapad first and it blew away every other Android tablet's audio I'd heard by a huge margin. The Tab S5e was on offer, so I snapped it up and it's impressively thin and light, but I still have a soft spot for the Mediapad cos it was my first experience of top quality speaker audio on a portable computer.
One of my freinds has a linux tablet, they dont seem that uncommon. I think it is a tab 7.

Android is a very watered down version and not the same thing as the operating system on this tablet.KDE Plasma Mobile is not the same thing as what Samsung customized for Android.

PFFT! I had the first big box Linux tablet (well PDA) way back in 2001 with the Sharp Zaurus SL5000D...
These days you can run it on practically any (Android) tablet using Andronix or Linux Deploy.
A decent tablet should have no problem running most distros. I even run Arch on an old Chinese crap tab.
Chromebooks: ChromiumOS (and by extension ChromeOS) IS a Linux distro.
Granted up until a few years ago you weren't able to access anything Linux specific. But now Crostini on ChromeOS creates a Debian container to run Linux apps.
Or if you really want that "Pure Linux" feel, you could always install Crouton on a Chromebook.
Makes me recall my old Sharp Zaurus device. Linux based it was a mini laptop and the screen could be rotated to make a (rather thick) tablet too. Probably the coolest tech product I’ve ever owned (probably 20 yeas ago), and I actually still have it.

To Anthony's point at the start, I got my dad to purchase a tab s7 after my very positive experience with my s5e.
I genuinely know no one with an iPad over here in Northern Europe, basically anyone who has a tablet has a Samsung, Lenovo or Huawei running on Android. Apple really doesn't have that big of a market share as you claim in your initial statement.
I'm told China hasn't adopted ipad either. For some reason apple still has a cult status this side the pond, and they charge a lofty premium. Funny side story, our former alleged president banned Huawei here in U.S.
@@stevejohnson1321 Oh yeah your 'side story' affected us over here as well. I used to work customer service/sales for a telecom operator and sold the aforementioned tablet brands. I always had the tell the caveat about the Huawei tablets that they didn't come with Google Play Store and you might have trouble installing all the apps you want.
I have a Galaxy Tab S6. I bought it becaue it's a lot cheaper than an iPad, and feels better than the ageing Air 2 that I had. It also has a really nice stylus that I use to draw on it.
That remark about Android tablets being only for old people with that old-ass android tablet picture is just complete ignorance that I would expect from a casual/fashion tech youtuber, the kind that reviews their favorite iPhone cases, not from LTT. You clearly have not seen a Samsung tablet in at least 3-4 years. Which is a shame, because they are great. The app situation is still not the best, but it has at least as many advantages as disadvantages over iPadOS. Especially the Samsung extras. And there is the upcoming Android 12L. There were like 10 videos about iPads in the last year, maybe you could squeeze in one about Android/Samsung tablets as well, just to escape being this one-sided.

Even the company Linux guru can only demonstrate how difficult linux is to use as a daily driver, I love it.

On tablet, sure. That still needs a lot of development. Desktop Linux? That's a different story and depends on several things like hardware and what people need to do with it. Lots of people have very smooth experiences using Linux as a daily driver. I migrated solely to Linux pretty quickly after trying it. I've had good experiences helping others, including my parents, switch over with no issues whatsoever for their simple needs. It can be an excellent daily driver with no issues whatsoever just as there can be problems. For those interested in it, it's worth trying to find out.
