Very cool licks! Altered licks can also be used on any dominant 7 chord in jazz... it doesn't have to be an altered chord. The dominant chords are flexible that way, but the rhythm players have to only be playing a dominant 7 chord to give the soloist that kind of flexibility. If the rhythm player is playing a dominant 9 chord, dominant 11 chord or dominant 13 chord (with a natural 9, or natural 11, and/or natural 13) then the altered scale will not work with that kind of dominant chord. Sometimes an inexperienced rhythm player will add those natural extensions to a dominant chord and you will quickly realize it when your altered licks don't match up with the rhythm player (that can be a teachable moment for that rhythm player). Sometimes compositions are purposely written with dominant 9, 11, or 13 chords because the composer intends that sound.
Thanks a lot for this Andy. I think in the notes shown at 3:15 the 4th note in the sequence, should be notated as Eb instead of E. Oh, and the last but one is also Eb instead of E. Probably just because we can't quite see the key signature so the accidentals would help.
This is so great! Because I was looking for a video to show me ideas to solo over What you won’t do for Love by Bobby Caldwell and this is the exact progression except in that song he adds the C7 or C13 as the last measure in the progression. Thanks for this!
For the second lick I think there's a little mistake on the tab : it should be F# instead of G (4th fret instead of 5th). Your phrasing and ideas are great, thx for the lesson !
You’re saying the key here is Gminor but can you also says it’s in the key of Bb? And can I use the diminished scale over this progression? If so where does it start?
Yes, you can look at it in Bb but the resolution is Gm (so I prefer to see it in Gm). For the Dominant Diminished Scale, use the half-whole on the D7 chord.

That's a good question - it means the 5th and/or the 9th of a chord are altered: #5, b5, #9, or b9.
