The way that Dempsey kicked that 63 yarder is the really amazing part of it. Compare it to the way Justin Tucker had to use a different starting formation to break the record.
WRONG! The Rule specifically states that if the receiving team last touches the ball before it goes out of bounds, the ball is spotted at the inbounds spot. THAT IS WHAT THE RULE SAYS.

Technically the receiving team does not have possession yet. "The kicking team may not kick the ball out of bounds or be the last to touch the ball before it goes out of bounds between the goal lines. If the receiving team is the last to touch the ball before it goes out of bounds, the receiving team puts the ball in play at the inbounds spot."
Dempsey was unbelievable. He was a pudgy guy that did not look like an athlete. He only had one hand and half a foot. I saw him waddle down the field tackle a guy and knock him out of the game. He kicked his record field goal in the thick air of Louisiana. I believe the kicker that beat him did it in the thin air of Denver..

Don’t listen to Dan Dierdorf when he says,”That’s the rule!” He is wrong! The rule does not allow for the receiving team to place the ball out of bounds! Dierdorf’ comments were in the OTHER play that the Packers got away with this misinterpretation.

Rule 6 Section 2 Article 3: "Penalty: For a kickoff out of bounds: The receiving team may elect to take possession of the ball 25 yards from the spot of the kick at the inbounds line on the side of the field where the ball went out of bounds, or at the out-of-bounds spot." Rule 3 Section Section 31 Article 3: "Item 2. Loose Ball. A loose ball that is not in player control is out of bounds when it touches a boundary line or anything that is on or outside such line, including a player, an official, or a pylon."

That angle on the Dempsey kick is amazing. Like, I knew it was a long-ass kick, but that shot really puts it in perspective.

He did have a modified shoe that turned his crippled foot into a sledgehammer. I always have mixed feelings about that.
