  • Rich in culture, charm, humanity and talent. There are many Montgomery Clift's qualities that can be listed. Edward Montgomery Clift born in Nebraska in 1920, revealed in early adolescence remarkable artistic gifts that he had occasion to express in the theater.
California, who watched carefully the actors who came from New York did not hesitate to contact Clift to propose auditions.
    Montgomery Clift reluctantly accepted.
He did not like California and preferred to return to New York.
The first film role he accepted after much hesitation was that of (Matthew Garth) in Red River directed by Howard Hawks, where he was confronted with the great John Wayne.
The next was The Search, which came out in theaters a few months before the Red River and this is considered the first appearance on the screens of Monty.
From this moment begins the success that led him to work for great directors like Fred Zinnemann, George Stevens, Alfred Hitchcock, Vittorio De Sica.
Of his 17 films in addition to those already mentioned, is right remembering: From Here to Eternity, A place in the Sun, I confess, Suddenly Last Summer, The Misfits, Judgement at Nuremberg, Freud.
But despite the success, the admiration for him, the life of Monty will be a succession of difficult moments alternated with brief happiness moments.
The serious car accident, which occurred in 1956, will mark the actor's life.
Coincidence of this event was the help of Elizabeth Taylor immediately after impact.
Clift, underwent a difficult operation for facial surgery.
The help and support from trusted friends, among whom had an important role the same Taylor, difficult times will be made less hard.
The mention at the beginning of the video of Dean and Brando, means that compared to Marlon and James, Montgomery Clift was became an acclaimed actor some years earlier. All three rebels and introspective came from the famous acting school in New York, the Actors Studio.
Montgomery Clift died in a summer day in July 1966 of a heart attack.
A few months later would have to begin working in Reflections in a Golden Eye.
Character who was later given to Marlon Brando.
Leaves a great legacy to all new generations of actors.
Music is from the film Out of Africa composed by John Barry.
    Films included in this video:
    - The Search
    - Red River
    - The Heiress
    - A Place in the Sun

Brando was so impressed by Clift's acting in A Place in the Sun that he voted for him at the Oscars over himself in Streetcar Named Desire. Doesn't get any better than that.

Yes, absolutelly breathtaking video. Monty had a face of an angel and his eyes were to die for. Lord, what an amazing actor! What a talent. His body language, eye expressions, gentleness could melt the entire Alasca and North Pole together. The song goes together with this outstanding actor and amazing performances. Monty had a rare gift that Hollywood did not know how to make good use of it because they thought they knew it all. Monty was a screen writer.

Like the music playing, MC was talking to you in every expression his face would show. He was not only a beautiful man but a wonderful actor... just walking in a scene and showing us the pain or joy in his face was as in his movements, loud and touching. He reminds me of Ralph Finness or RF reminds me of MC, both show so much in their face and movements. I just loved this man.

Montgomery Clift is my favorite actor. I respect his range. Unlike Brando and Dean, he was able to surrender to his more weak and vulnerable side without still projecting an edge. Yet he was able to venture into anger and rage and be equally convincing. To me, he was the actor who brought "The Method" to the screen first and deserves more credit for that.

It’s extraordinarily to think he was before Brando and Dean. It’s equally so that he self capitulated by his mid 40’s. Barely into the middle third of what should have been a long career. So many great roles to play but it wasn’t to be. The man bore his soul on the screen and that’s truly a rare thing. Missed but never forgotten. A beautiful tribute. The edit, the music, the imagery and choice of clips/videos. Well done.x

Thank you for this very moving video and tribute to such a wonderful actor. Montgomery Clift had a great gift, truly he was extraordinary in portraying emotion on the screen. Even in a western, "Red River", he is truly special; a role others would have taken a different tact, imagine for example, Robert Walker, or any other actor in the same role. Monty was George Steven's first choice for " Shane", the role ultimately going to Alan Ladd who was superb. Monty would have shined in Shane though as well. RIP Montgomery Clift.

No one could get into a part like Montgomery Clift, he could convey the mood of the character he was playing silently, without words, as in his portrayal of Fr. Michael Logan in "I Confess" where he was being accused of murder, and was unable to defend himself because of the seal of confession. Because of the way he was able to convey the inner struggle that Fr Logan was going through no words were needed to further explain the scene.

Thanks for sharing this. Monty remains one of the very greatest acting stars of all time. It is a darn shame that the culture he lived in was so unkind, so hypocritical and so unChristian. If Monty were alive today instead of then, it might be easier for him to live freely. He might even have married the one he loved. Monty LOVED Ella Fitzgerald's records. His biographer wrote that Monty's friends said he listened to Ella almost exclusively. I think he would have found this lovely theme too sad.

"Before Brando"? I think not. They were contemporaries. That being said, Clift was a prime example of the fragility of star power, before and after the accident that permanently changed him, inside & out. He became a completely different actor, obviously not by choice, his vulnerability eventually consuming him. One of the great Hollywood tragedies.

Sure it could have been worse, but it could have been better, too. He was a very talented actor that made some great movies (mostly in the early part of his career). He had to lead a double life which I'm sure ate away at him, had a near fatal car accident, and his life was destroyed by drugs and alcohol. His professional life saw great success but his personal life mostly sucked, at least in my opinion.

You obviously have no clue of what you're talking about. Monty's acting is unbelievable, he can nail a scene with his eyes alone. A real method actor who went to great lengths to capture the feel for a character. Watch him in "Judgement at Nuremberg," perhaps the best acting I have ever seen - he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for that film for only 11+ minutes on screen - the least amount ever for a nomination. He famously turned down the lead in "East of Eden," (James Dean)"Sunset Blvd, (William Holden) "High Noon" (Gary Cooper) and others because he didn't think he was right for the parts! He was selective and could have worked more than he did. HE was amazing on Broadway as well. Fine actor, and with all due respect, you have no taste.

To each his own, you know? Acting is a very subjective thing and some actors touch us emotionally while others do not. We’re all entitled to our opinions. Chill out. 😎

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think I’ve heard Daniel Day Lewis say that Montgomery Clift is is favorite actor.

Even though the film wasn't much, Monty was brilliant in I Confess.

I disagree, I think "I confess" was one of Hitchcock's most underrated films, good acting by everyone!
