  • We are forever indebted to the life and legendary artistry of our dear friend and hero, Lyle Mays. We were honored to spend an unforgettable day with Lyle and Alex Acuña filming for our Artist Video Series in 2010. The session featured Lyle’s incredible artistry playing Trilian and Omnisphere, completely improvised in a single take with no prior preparation. We were absolutely blown away and moved by the pure inspiration that unfolded. This is a behind the scenes look and interview from that very special day.
    Rest in peace, Lyle Mays.

I’m so sad at the news of Lyle’s passing. This video has always been one of my favorites demonstrating his love for music in the moment, as well as his joy of collaborating with others who can speak his subtle soft-spoken language. It would be a loving gift to the world to release the remainder of this magical session for all to enjoy. R.I.P Lyle Mays.

So many great memories with his and Pat's music. And that sound from the early years at ECM; - Steinway piano, organ, autoharps and especially the fat sounding 4 voice Oberheim analog. Man, that is one of the most beautiful sounds ever produced from a synth, and so beautifully integrated in the bands overall vibe.
No wonder so many synths from the 80's and 90's era had a "Lyle" preset tribute sound... May you rest in peace dear Lyle, you were a genius and we truly loved your music. Your legacy will live on for a long long time in our culture and music, all over the world.

I'm still in shock! Not only have I been a huge fan of Lyle's music, but it has gotten me through some pretty rough times. And then there's the pure enjoyment of the music. I can't get enough of his music. So impressive is his writing, playing and musical phrasing. How can one person put so much emotion in one note and then the one that follows it? I'm a grown man and yet when I hear his music now, I get a knot in my throat and a tear or two appear. RIP wonderful Lyle.

1987. Poplar Creek Music Theater, outside of Chicago. Pat Metheny group. They were at their peak popularity wise and probably the only time they were able to book a place that big. I'm in the parking lot having a few beers before the show, and this long haired hippy looking guy is about 30 feet from me with a handful of Frisbees, and tossing with folks in the parking lot. He didn't identify himself and I don't think anybody knew who he was except me and a guy I was with. "Holly crap, that's Lyle Mays". I suspect he was grateful to the fans and wanted to be one of them and not a star. Of course then he went on stage and left us all mesmerized.

I've not been this sad over the passing of a musician since December 1980 when John Lennon was shot when I was 27. It was the same time as I bought American Garage and fell in love with what I heard. Lyle's music eased my pain when I was hurting,
And now as I listen to Close to Home the loss is overwhelming. Rest in peace, gentle genius.

A legend. Not many keyboard players' styles are immediately recognisable, yet you knew it was Lyle within a couple of bars. His piano solo on San Lorenzo is so sublime, so subtle and so well-crafted, it takes me to another plane, every time I listen.
It's a big gap in music, now he's gone.
Condolences to his family and loved ones.

Lyle Mays was my favorite jazz pianist (as Pat Metheny is my favorite jazz guitarist). He was a graduate of University of North Texas (a school renowned for its jazz programs) in Denton, Texas. Every time I visit Denton, I think of Lyle Mays. Loved his original "calliope" synth patch and smooth and beautiful Oberheim patches (as well as Pat's synth trumpet patch). He will be greatly and dearly missed. Lyle was definitely one in 7.53 billion! Thank you for sharing your gift of music. You (and PMG) have touched the hearts of millions!

I've been missing Lyle Mays for a long time but I never dreamed it would become permanent so early. I swear, everything Pat and Lyle did TOGETHER offered a wondrous push-and-pull that has been the soundtrack of my life since the eighth grade. If a divine force told me I could only have one recording to listen to for the rest of my life but I have to chose right now I already know Pat Metheney Group The Way Up would be it, mostly because of Lyle. I love everything Lyle Mays has given to the world but That One is an onion. Endless layers forever, offering something new with every listen. Rest in peace, Lyle. Believe me, music never left you and neither will we.

This world crumbled a little bit more when we all lost Lyle. It became darker, colder, and for those who loved this man and for the musicians that spent hours breaking down his music, borrowing some of his virtuosity, if we can get away with it, and adding it to our tool chests, but most of all, our collective hearts are broken in pieces. and all that beautiful knowledge and future gifts from Lyle, are gone.....forever. Lyle, I hope God plays an instrument because he sure as heaven has the best keyboardist we mortals could offer. See you soon, buddy. After I find my parents and my wife, I'll be looking for you!

Before Lyle Mays, I put no one could tickle the keys of a piano like Bob James. Then one day I heard Lyle Mays play Bill Evans on the radio and ended up purchasing the Fictionary album, which I still considered to be the best of his few works outside of what he has done with Pat Metheny. In fact, as a result of searching out as much of Lyle Mays' works as I could find, I was led to the Pat Metheny Group. So caught up in the current chaos of the world that I just learned that he passed this morning, crazy. Though he may go down as one of the most unknown and underrated musicians and composers in the history of jazz, his music and works are timeless. R.I.P. Mister Mays.

My first PMG concert was in Sante Fe, New Mexico in July of 1980 at the Paolo Soleri amphitheater. The full moon was high in the sky, the night desert air was soothing, and the music and musicianship was sublime. Along with a group of great friends, I couldn't have asked for one of the best nights in my life. I wish that night could have lasted forever. Of course, I was wearing my cologne called Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent (a great complement to the music). That night was perfect! PS-I also have Trilian, Omnisphere, and Stylus RMX by Spectrasonics, and their software is incredible and impeccable!

    Lyle playing in the heaven...
angels suspend to listen to him.
His notes are more than seven...
He will be for ever, even if he's been.
