Paul, you’ve done it again! Thanks so much. I’ve been looking for this for so long and it means I can finally ditch my TC-Helicon pedal and go completely iPad!
This looks fantastic. The formant preservation setting is amazing - I've tried a number of vocal harmonizer apps and they all sound very unnatural, which may be fine, if your'e going for a very electronic type of effect, but I've been able to create some harmonies with this one that actually sound pretty warm and pleasing in a song, and that's on the first day I got the app! Keep up the great work Paul!
Thanks Ed, I really appreciate the feedback. This is exactly what I was going for, as many of the harmonisers out there sound synthetic and not at all natural. It's a personal choice I guess, some may even like the vocoder type harmonies, but personally thats not for me. Consider posting a review mate.
This is looking (well sounding) awesome! Though it might not be the main purpose of this APP,, I am interested in how it could be used to create more extreme and artificial effects on vocals or instruments. Keep up the great work!
@@PaultheMusicMan Understand & I'll be giving it a shot + within AUM or other hosts, any sound can be further processed, or any mangled sound can be fed into Vocal Harmony.
@@tubelog It very much depends on the mode you use. The Auto Sense mode requires a monophonic input for the pitch tracking to work, and it is tuned for vocals, so if you attempt to send in a polyphonic signal it will be all over the place. Like I said, this is really aimed aat pure vocals and not so much instruments.
I just completed mixing a song using your plugin. Fantastic sound quality and very natural. One question though. I see in your previous comments that you can't separate the vocal harmonies onto a separate track of a daw (I'm using Loopy Pro). I understand the technical reasons you explained. Since this is not possible, what would be extremely helpful would be the addition of a built in sequencer to allow us to automate the harmonies over the course of the song. To mark all the specific phrases where the harmonies come in and out as well as changes to other parameters depending on the section of the song. Would this be feasible?
You can already do this using MIDI Chord mode. Checkout my MasterClass #1 video on how to use this feature. In future versions I will look at the posibility of having a seperate output for none effected harmonies so at least you can isolate the harmonies from the original vocal.
Wow, nice sounding Harmonizer ... the voices sound much better than the 3 pedals I have, I never thought about using a Microphone with effects through the iPhone/iPad, but now, How do I use a Live Mic with this app??? 😅🤣👍🏻 Excellent work Paul, You are The MusicMan! Thanks for your work!
Of course the problem with a live mic as always is feedback, so ideally you need to be using headphones or feeding it pre-recorded audio as I am doing in these examples.
@@PaultheMusicMan feedback is always something to look for, avoiding direct "line" from Mic to speakers, and controlling the gain, etc., but Is it fare to say that this app is not recommended for Live performance cases? From the pedals I have, Voice Box is the best one, I'm curious if the MeloVox app could work better 🤓🤔
@@enrifretless I've not actually tried using this in a live situation, but I dare say if you've managed to get a PA setup with mic and amplification to work without feedback, then this may work equally well. The one reason I warn people about feedback is because on the iPad there is always a possibility of feedback without wearing headphones and I don't want anyone doing damdage to their internal speakers. Vocoders are renowned for causing feedback issues in live situations, more so that harmonizers. Imogen Heap for instance struggles to perform Hide and Seek live because of these kinds of issues.
@@PaultheMusicMan Got it, thanks for responding again, since my main interest is in using the app for harmonizing (Octave Up keeping Male character/formant) it should be alright, I'll give it a try after figuring out how to setup the "gear" for this 👍🏻
Not currently. There are two distinct modes, the first voice mode uses a phase vocoder to create the harmonies, and all are created with a single pass of an FFT, so impossible to seperate. The other instrument mode, uses seperate FFT's to create each voice so this would be possible, however you wouldn't get the formant preservation. Creating harmonies is a reallly CPU intensive task, and I've spent a long time optimizing these methods to use the iOS accelerate library for speed. So it does mean I had to make compromises.
@@PaultheMusicMan This is really great work Paul! Congratulations I didn't think I'd ever need a harmonizer like this, but this demo has got me re-condsidering! Does the compromise described above mean that there is no way to implement internal panning of the harmonies within melovox? If the voices could at least be panned (those pan values ideally exposed as AUV3 parameters), then this could really be a VERY useful aux/send effect.
Good Stuff here! Sounds great! Can we please please get a searchable manual/help in-app? Or a fixed index on one side? Thats for all inapp-manuals (forgive me if i dont know every of them)
@PaultheMusicMan a very important argument. But if i understand it right, the VS includes a pitch corrector (like autotune) but this feature not exists in the VH ?
You can condigure the latency in Settings. It can go quite low depending on quality settings, to the point where you won't really notice, especially on vocals as this is intended for.
Paul, can this app produce harmonies based on guitar chords like the TC Helicon? If not, is it hard to make an app like that? Because there is none out there yet. No one seem to understand the difference, do you Paul?
This app uses a monophonic pitch tracker tuned for vocals, so a polyphonic chord input from a guitar will confuse it. It is extremely difficult to do the same thing with a polyphonic input without dedicated hardware, and while an iPad is getting much more powerful I can't ever see anyone being a fully polyphonic harmoniser to the iPad anytime soon.
@@PaultheMusicManSounds like a proper challenge! Makes me wonder if there are any apps that can determine what chord is playing on a guitar. My little guitar tuner can tell which strings are out of tune if I strum it. 🤷🏻♂️ Big fan of your work!

Now, when I try to open it again inside Logic, it has disappeared from the plug-in app list. Someone else pointed out this issue and I am in the process of trying to track down a solution. It is working fine for me on my M2 iPad and on some older iPads I've tested. it is also working perfectly fine for most other Logic users too, so I'm not sure what triggers this and whether it is a Logic issue or not. The other user saw a message saying something like 'This is a MONO to MONO app' from Logic before it dissapeared from his list. Did you see a similar message? Does the app appear in other host apps such as AUM or GarageBand? Is it only Logic having this problem? If this is a general problem, try rebooting your iPad and see if that helps as it forces all AUv3's to re-regsiter with iOS. I've also passed this issue onto the Logic team, and they are also looking into it right now.
Also, you may want to ensure you are choosing to add MeloVox as an Audio FX and not a MIDI FX, as it is only available as an Audio FX. If you still have issues after following my suggestions please contact me on the email address: info at 4pockets dot com and I will add you to the TestFlight.
Hi Paul, thank you for your reply; apologies for my delay getting back to you. I may have solved it. First, I updated my iOS to the latest version, then updated Logic Pro to version 2. Now I can see the plug-in again, but only on Stereo audio channels! Should it also show up on mono audio channels? It does initially come up on first use with the text, ‘No Presets - please quit and run in stand-alone mode to endure the presets are installed correctly.’ I did that and all presets appear to be working, only the issue of mono comparability remains…
I had a bit more of a play with it and think I've found a workaround for the issue of it not showing in the plug-in list for mono channels… if you change the channel input format to stereo, then load Melovox from the list, then change the channel back to mono it stays active on the channel. It also then shows up in the available plugins list. However, if you delete Melovox from the audio channel, you must redo the process, as it disappears from the list. It's still buggy, but it's a reasonable workaround for the moment!
