      @@matteo.v1 Does how soft they are matter though? Isn't it more important to know the difference in the compounds used at the same race than between two races?

      C2 - Soft
      C1- Medium

    The year is 2020.
    Pirelli have released a new tire compound called Ludicrousoft. It made the cars so fast that the drivers brains went into their feet but it was a fan favourite because of the plaid compound.

    You forgot to mention that in 2018, for the first time, Pirelli now don't only bring 3 consecutive (from Softer-Harder) compounds to a Grand Prix anymore, for example the Chinese Grand Prix 2018. In 2017, the Chinese Grand Prix had the following three compounds: Supersoft, Soft, Medium. In 2018, the Chinese Grand Prix will have the compounds: Ultrasoft, Soft and Medium. As you can see they skip the Supersoft tyre and therefore make the qualifying/race choices more interesting. Hope any of this made sense, my first language isn't English.

    2017 was pretty dull in terms of strategy after Pirelli pretty much nailed 2016 in my opinion with the idea of bringing 3 sets of tyres to a race which really opened up strategy. In 2017 it didn't really work as well since the tyres were so durable.
    Hopefully these 2018 changes will re-introduce strategy calls within the pit-lane as seeing everyone commit to a 1 stop strategy on the two softest tyres is quite disappointing.

    • @chainbear
      @chainbear  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree! The three tyre thing was genius in my opinion and it was so frustrating to see it all thrown away with over conservative tyres. Roll on 2018.

    • @daniellee4003
      @daniellee4003 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I can tell, the 7 tyre compounds are just Pirelli covering their bases.
      If the compounds are too hard everywhere, they'll change their plans and go 1 compound softer.
      If the compounds are too soft everywhere, they'll change their plans and go 1 compound harder.
      I'd love for Pirelli to prove me wrong, or to even have a gap in tyre choice (say, US, S and M), but I really doubt it.
      I'd expect us to see 4 tyre compounds regularly, (SS, S, M, H) and then HS probably won't even be given by Pirelli at all, SH will have 2 teams use 1 set in FP1/2 only and that's it, and US will only be used in Q2 by a few slower teams to get into Q3, who will then get obliterated in the race because they'll need to pit in the first 5 laps.

    I am actually against to colour and label the same sets of colours to whichever three compounds into just soft medium and hard.
    It will cause headache to the pirelli's employees since they will be confused which three compounds should be taken out of the storage, coloured/labeled and shipped, and it will be a massive disaster if they mixed up some of the wrong compounds, coloured/labeled them and shipped them to the teams.

    Thank you for making this, I understand the many compounds now!
    I think commentators (except Croft) will get fed up with all the silly names and just start calling them soft medium and hard regardless.
    I will say if in 2019 they do go with just painting them all only 3 colours (which they won't) it should be Red, Yellow and White so that Blue is reserved for wets only

    I like the idea of tires brought to a race being called soft-medium-hard regardless of their absolute softness. In addition to that, though, I'd still like to be able to know how the soft of this weekend compares to the soft of other weekends, so perhaps Pirelli might introduce an arbitrary unit of softness, e.g., the "hypersoft" would be assigned the value of 10 and everything other compound would receive a number that accurately reflects how soft it is by comparison (ultra soft 9, supersoft 8, soft 7, medium 5, hard 3, superhard 2, ...)

    - Are the same rules applicable for 2021?
    - If yes, do they reveal the two mandatory tyre options to the public?
    - As I understood from the video, racers who qualify for Q3 need to return Q3 tyres at the end of the qualifying, whereas the teams eliminated in Q1 and Q2 can keep em for the race? Doesn't this give them an advantage?

  • @Bg518albs
    @Bg518albs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear Perrelli,
    You know that over in Indycar, the focus of the racing is, you know, the RACING; and not issues with the Firestone tyre compound. Yes, they get a mention every once an.awhile. But, the focus is on the cars and the racing. Oh, and they (Indycar and Firestone) do it on 3 compounds and not 9 (including the 2 wet compounds).

  • @jordansingleton
    @jordansingleton 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with the very last point. Just keep the same three colours for the tyres, even if red is super soft one week and hyper soft the next. I don't care that one week's red tyre may be softer or harder than last week's, I just want to know what the softest is. Etc.

  • @bbmikej
    @bbmikej 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It will be interesting to see if Pirelli decides to skip over compounds in order to have more varied strategies. For example, with how close the SS and US tires are to each other the minimal wear differences makes the US the better option, but what if they do a say, Hard, SS, HS weekend to make the wear vs time difference more pronounced. It would make a 1-stop or 2-stop strategy more balanced. The Hard may be a few second a lap slower than the US but may go twice as far meaning the pit delta would play an even greater role in which tire to use.

    Hello Sir,
    After popping up in my suggested feed, I’m now subscribed in the hope of more videos like this. In my opinion a very good in-depth look explaining the complexity of the topic. What I find sad though is the fact that F1/ FOM/ Liberty Media should be making videos like this, so the viewers don’t have to get their information from third parties, but it’s good for your channel, I guess. Maybe F1 will give us a video on such things before the season. I doubt they will be able to include that subtle criticism, in this case of Pirelli.
    Keep it up!

    I do agree with you about the coloring of the tires. A lot of racing fans don't need to know what specific compound or construction of the tires drivers are using during a race. Just keep it simple like the "primary and alternate" Bridgestone tire compound era. And... also how about reducing the crews working for each car during a pit-stop, just to make pit-stops in races more interesting?

    The colours on the tyres will tell a fan how long a tyre is going to last. You won't be thinking oh they've got the softest compound which is an ultrasoft this weekend.... or is it a supersoft?? It's a lot of colours but it does serve a purpose

  • @chrisc3825
    @chrisc3825 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the review. This is getting a bit insane. I love the idea of making a 2 stop more practical, although some would prefer 0 pit stops (I find watching the strategy that goes into this on the Mercedes Pit Wall videos so intriguing; I really can't imagine eliminating such a cool team aspect from F1). With that said, I don't think introducing more tires really helps with encouraging 2 stops. Making the tires 2 steps softer, however does. The fact that the Hard's were eliminated by like Spain because they were totally useless doesn't bode well for the 2018 Super Hard's; it'll be the same situation where you can run 2 of the softer tires (M-H, last year's S-M) for the distance of any track and thus complete the mandatory 1 stop. I can't imagine a situation where you would ever use the Super Hard's just as there was no situation where you'd run Hard's last year, that is unless they got rid of the mandatory pit stop. I'm partially color blind too, and this is going to make reading tires more difficult for me :|

      Earlier last season I seem to recall hearing that teams would get to choose compounds for the races "within reason", though this seems to have been dropped. If teams had to choose between three compounds to take out of four allocated, it would be very interesting - do you go for a softer tyre for optimal qualifying and risk having to do an extra stop in the race, or potentially qualify lower in the order but have the potential to do one less stop with a more durable tyre?

    I think the reason why they color the tyres in the race in the wide variaty of colors is so people can see on which they drive. otherwise they might drive on a supersoft in the red color. and somebody else is driving the hypersofts. the lap time of the hypersofts will be faster but they can race way less rounds. if you keep they colors like they are give you can make your decision on the color on the enemies tyres.

    That idea that there should be only 3 colors is brilliant I think. We will all know what tyres are used anyway, but it'll be much easier to see and simpler for non pedantic people :)

    Seems like your suggestion for the simplified tyre colours came through. In 2019 all races will have the white, yellow and red tyres, although any sub-compound may be used.

    Your race code for tyres is kind a genius!
    The same three colors every race would make it easier!
    Though I still would like to know what actually compound it is.

    I think that they should give 4 to 5 options for tire compounds. They should then space the compounds out and remove the rules on minimum number of sets and compounds used during the race

    Really informative, subbed instantly. Keep it up!
    EDIT: Considering Pirelli has to manufacture these tyres way ahead of the race, I think it´s easier for them to make them the same colour. Unifying them for the each race woul be a complication imho. And for the viewers as well aI think.

    Great video ... again. Can you make a video about F1 constructors championships? Why each year teams need to build new cars? Do they have right to use last year cars? What elements and parts of F1 car must be constructed by teams themselves, and what they can buy/rent from other constructors/teams?
    I believe that this issue is almost always overlooked by a large part of the F1 community, and yet it is fascinating, this is mainly core of F1.

    As usual, an excellent video. Personally I'm not bothered by the large number of colors. I'm sure we'll all get used to it soon enough and I think it's nice to be able to compare the performance/use of a given compound across tracks, which I think would be somewhat more difficult if they used the same 3 colors for every race.

    AAAAAND its still mostly one-stopping all the time. Even with the softer tyres. I would love having races where Medium-Hard and Soft-Soft-Medium (relative) would be almost the same times, but Soft-Medium would be almost impossible (and slow). Would spice up the question if it would be good to do Q2 on the Medium tyre and get the one-stop, but being slower in Q2 as a risk.

  • @patrickkerr6159
    @patrickkerr6159 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome video! I embrace these new compounds as I really think it'll mix up the racing strategy loads, so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out. I do agree with you also on the whole too many colours thing. During the race I don't particularly care if they'll be using the ultrahypermega soft tyre as i'll probably know which compounds they'll be using already. I'd just want to know which sets are the softest/hardest out of what they have with just having soft, medium & hard colours in the race! Thank you for getting me through the winter break! Amazing video dude :D
