    I'm a software engineer, but not a game dev. I (anonymously) asked some fellow engineers online why there are no unions for software developers, and the answer I got was that our jobs are nice, safe, we sit in air conditioned offices and make better-than-average pay; therefore we don't need unions. I hope stuff like this motivates software devs to unionize.

    In 2020, the most turbulent part of my life began. The pandemic basically cut my highschool Senior year short, and the gaming college I had already been accepted to would now be online. I wasn't able to get any scholarships, so I had to take loans for my tuition. After a year plus of that, our school had managed to allow in person classes and the industry I was training for was going under it's biggest boom. Things were dark, but were getting better. Once I graduated, I would be able to pay off my loans and put my life together. Eventually I graduated in July of 2022, and only a few months later, the layoffs started. It was already hard enough trying to find a job before. Now it's been impossible. Layoffs mean two things for me. Less jobs and more competition. How can I compete for an entry level position that requires 3 years of experience somehow, against veteran developers? And it gets worse as almost every month, there's more layoffs. It feel like I've been shot in front of the finish line. Hopefully this leads to change, and not things getting worse.

      I’m hearing this with a lot if creative firlds in general too. The animation industry is falling apart and it’s been impossible for anyone to break through into the field. When people said “yeah the pandemic sucks but think of all the great art that’ll come out of it” they were so full of horseshit, half the artists that had jobs prior to the pandemic are unemployed now and executives want to replace the other half with AI.

    I wouldn't expect a gaming industry boom anytime in the near future because it's not just games that are collapsing; it's the entire entertainment industry. Animation, film, game studios, even entertainment media. It's a combination of shitty management and a shitty economy.
    The truth is that these are purely luxury sectors, but with the worldwide economy basically in shambles that means people are less willing and/or able to spend money on such luxuries in the face of an exponentially rising cost of living. Combine that with these companies putting out subpar products it's basically a death spiral for them as they struggle to breathe for air. Laying people off can only get you so far.
    And yes, I do believe that it's the leadership that should be held entirely responsible because they are the ones who make the decisions, and nearly every single decision made has been piss poor.

    • @TheViveros
      @TheViveros  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I will say, while I do agree that it's the entire industry and that there won't be a boom, I will push back on the framing of it as pure luxury. It's definitely not immediately necessary for survival, but I think part of what has allowed us to get to a point where people are so eager to see creatives punished or belittled for not doing "real work" (i.e., gaming layoffs, the writers/actors strike, etc) is partially because we view it as luxury work, and that luxuries are inherently unnecessary. In economic terms spending on entertainment definitely falls under luxury spending to some extent, but imo it's important to remember that aside from the human need to both produce and consume art on some level to fulfill greater needs, these are massive sectors of the economy accounting for billions of dollars in wages and taxes globally.
      This is more of an essay than I intended, and I promise I do agree with what you're saying, I just think that it's important to consider the language we use when discussing this sector of the economy. Personally, when I think of luxury, I think of something that's the upgraded, more expensive, higher quality version of another thing like a luxury car or luxury handbag that only exist to provide an upgrade to something that would still otherwise exist, which I don't think is a useful way of looking at cultural industries.

    • @krunchyapples
      @krunchyapples 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It seems like we have differing views of what constitutes luxury, and I'll admit I was using the term loosely. However it is also true that things are pretty dire economically right now, and when push comes to shove on what people are willing to spend their money on it will be either necessities or entertainment.
      I'm not saying "luxury" as a judgement call on the cultural sector because I agree it is important and I like that it flourishes when times are good, but I am just saying as a matter of fact that in times of economic uncertainty that it is bound to retract simply because people have to be more prudent with their fiscal choices.

    Speaking of game development, I was so close to making computer science my college degree to develop video games, but after researching the current industry and its state, I obviously chose another degree. I really hope more people join unions for worker protection, it's ridiculous you can be crunched for 3/4s of a day just to be laid off out of nowhere.

    I ashamedly was someone who ignorantly and optimistically thought that the Microsoft ABK acquisition and the change in leadership would help correct at least the systems and leadership that allowed the horrendous things that came out with the lawsuits about what ABK was like internally from happening anymore, my mindset being that it couldn't get any worse as someone even took their own life from all the harrassment (memory foggy but there was a story about something like that during all the lawsuits ABK was facing), and the aqusitions announcement's timing solidified this in my mind.
    I was under no illusion that it was entirely a good thing; big corporations aren't anyones friend and I know they dont care about consumers or the workers of ABK, I knew of how Microsoft has fucked things up before, but I was tunnel visioned on the thought of the awful shit revealed by the lawsuits at least being worked out so it doesn't happen anymore, I think because of my own guilt for wanting to play the game even if I didn't spend money and wanting and hoping that I wouldn't have to feel so much baggage about this game I love that is very important to me and is one of the only common activities I can do with good friends.
    The layoffs (as well as the deafening silence from Blizzard about Pharah's VA supporting the Palestinian genocide) shattered this optimism in my mind. It was hearbreaking seeing so many wonderful people lose their jobs out of nowhere for no reason. It was a reality check that things were not going to get better, and that my guilt for wanting to play the game again after a few monthes away and try out the new season will not only continue but get worse.
    If the layoffs and otherwise killed my optimism (which also makes it hard to leave this without feeling powerless/hopeless..), this video has served to help the ignorance side of where my original support of the acquisition came from. I'm not very politically educated and I don't really understand how the world works so the majority of what you've shared in this video is new to me, thank you so so much for putting all the time and effort into making this so well stated and well thought out. I don't really have much to add to this conversation because I don't really know much about the subject, but even though I'm not the apathetic acquisition supporter you were aiming for I hope hearing my perspective and how your video has helped educate me is still rewarding for you as this is a very important video and I hope you're very proud of it. Thank you for making such incredible high quality work.

      @@TheViveros Yeah I can understand not being able to follow stuff but I think unfortunately it's a limitation of the medium (in the sense that this isn't a convo where you can't really double back and reiterate on stuff). I’m the same way, although part of the issue with my videos in particular is that I only have a headset mic so it *always* picks up breathing/swallowing/lip smacking noises. I go through and manually cut all of those out during editing, which does kill some of the natural breaks that would exist if I was just talking to someone, but I think it’s also a trade off I’m happy to make bc leaving in all those breathing sounds and knowing people are hearing that would make me want to die.

    Studying game design in Germany myself and already struggling just on the terms of the learning program, future certainly don't seem bright! Even worse for my groupmates. Hell, I may be a talentless hack but all these people I work along with are passionate and I've already seen them express themselves in such wildly beautiful ways. They don't fucking deserve being layed off at the end of the financial year because it looks good on a report! They don't deserve constantly being on guard about their livelihood because, being forced to be private contractors, they'll have no rights in the working environment, no connections to rely on!
    Our professors consistently warn us about the dangers of crunch, reinforcing how we should avoid it in our studies, heck, the way they just invoke it as an almost natural reality of the field - it's sad as shit. These years may be the only time we actually may have some manner of consistency in our lives. At least if we remain adamant on staying in the field. And I'm afraid, just like many animators who work in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc, they're too passionate to abandon their dreams.
    I hope it gets better, I really do. And I hope I contribute even a bit to that.

      I very much share this sentiment. I come from ARPG games and we see it with Diablo so freaking clearly. Because of the trash coming from Blizzard, I now have Last Epoch in the making and that thing, even considered it's rn underdeveloped, blows D4 so hard, it's not even funny, it's just sad.

      @TheViveros  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I really want to hope that that'll be the case, but I also don't know if it will be. I think part of the problem is that more and more of these smaller studios will get consumed by the bigger companies as that happens - Microsoft is on its acquisition spree right now, and I think if Sony thinks it's working, it'll go on its own shopping spree as much as possible. Both companies have too many resources behind them to be pushed out by a new competitor, and I can absolutely imagine the Game Pass model picking up and long-term screwing indies the same way original programming on Netflix has become an endless cycle of "It gets two seasons and then it's abruptly cancelled".

    • @Kagetheorc
      @Kagetheorc 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheViveros It's quite possible, and is kind of the trend we've seen lately. With some exceptions, to be sure, but AAA has been floundering for a bit now, and that's given room for indie upstarts like Lethal Company, Hades, etc etc. The more these two megacompanies try to eat everyone up, the more the indie scene has a chance to grow, I imagine. If nothing else, purely out of spite gamers will have for the megacompanies

    This isnt liberal, or capitalist. This is corporatist and oligarchical. These major corporations are heavily involved in every aspect of our society and economy, including government, from local to federal. They get in bed with special interests and government officials, then lobby for policies which benefit them, and greatly hinder small businesses and entrepreneurs. They end up dominating entire industries, not through deregulation; as we would see in a liberal or capitalist society, but through intricate and complex regulations and mandates. Those mandates and regulations often championed as help for the middle class and financially struggling, but always benefit major corporations. Take note of how many small businesses were destroyed inn the lockdowns; yet most every major corporation is still fine. Some industries did take a hit, like Gaming, but so many more small businesses were lost.
    I get that you dont like "the system," neither do us old liberals, but learn what you are talking about, before blaming capitalism. We are about as capitalist as China, which is, not really. Capitalism is free and open market, not corporate control.

      @TheViveros  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      I spent literal years learning them, thanks - but if you don't have the time to spend all those years studying poli sci and finance, Google's free. If you use it, you'll find that capitalism is "an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit." That is a system that naturally, and inevitably, leads to a consolidation of capital at the very top, leading to the corporatist oligopoly that you are describing. Corporatism and oligopoly are not mutually exclusive terms with capitalism, and I regret to inform you that "free markets" always were and always will be just a euphemism for rich people saying "Nobody get in my way, I'd like all the money".
      The system is capitalism. You recognize that the system is flawed but are trying to split hairs as though the corporatism and oligopoly you're mad at are not also part of the capitalism.

      teachers in america are the butt of every poor joke imaginable this is because of the cuts to the education sphere and layoffs, yet imagine all your teachers who have shaped you into the person you are, people who showed you light and compassion, teachers would taught you important lessons. imagine your life without those people. can you even imagine that alternate version of you? now imagine you had the option to fire hundreds of people exactly like that, cause a irreversible ripple effect to have fewer taxes and more income for YOU to spend? would you take that option?
      if you are getting a communist message from this video think about why you cannot divorce shitty bosses and layoffs from capitalism. we do not exist in a 100% capitalist society, public sectors exist for a reason because laissez-faire capitalism led to the child workers dying at age 9 from cancer or from being killed by a machine, the pollution that gave everyone cancer, the 18 hour work DAY. that is why we have restrictions on capitalism and restrictions on layoffs would make us better.
