Creator of the GameFAQs thread here. Imagine my surprise when I randomly got this video in my recommended, years after falling out of the loop on the status of Tag Anywhere in DK64 thinking that it was nothing more than a niche thing I was seeking out, only to see my own thread in this video 🤣I'm thrilled that the dream was fulfilled and there's a Tag Anywhere hack that works on console! It'll definitely be my go-to way to play the game from now on!
After all your announcements, the video title, thumbnail, it took me until after the first minute to realize it's the story of tag anywhere and not tag barrel storage lmao
I just played the DK64 Randomizer for the first time for a future video. Swapping around Kongs at any time is a game changer, I don’t think I can go back! Thank you for sharing this history on tag barrel hackers! It's really fascinating.
It's hard for me to watch this video and somehow not think of Sony's infamous press conference at the 2006 E3, where one guy hawked a game where you'd fight a "giant enemy crab". Supposedly, that game had "real-time weapon change". Well, this is real-time Kong change! :D
Maybe I'm in the minority but I liked the decision of not being able to change them at will. It forces the player to get good at exploring these levels as the different characters since you'll have to go through them in their entirety multiple times as the different characters forcing you to play longer and explore new things and places. I would play as DK and find some bananas for Tiny, do the DK mission, then change to Tiny explore as Tiny and find stuff for Diddy and complete my mission as Tiny, switch to Diddy and you see the trend. That was part of the fun. People just like complaining honestly. That game is honestly top 5 for me personally.
I’ve 101% Tag Anywhere; and it’s amazing. I will say, I still think the ultimate dk64 game has yet to be made. If say, every banana was yellow, and every king could pick it up, I think that would fix everything. You’d come across challenges designed for certain kong and have to come back later with them unlocked, or go switch, instead of just rushing through every challenge. Some of the gameplay flow is missing with Tag Anywhere. If all golden bananas, regular bananas, and coins could be collected to a single total instead of being broken up between the 5, and every Kong could collect them, that would be the ultimate DK64
If you haven't played it already, I shall take this opportunity to shamelessly plug DK64 Randomizer ( dk64randomizer.com/ ). It has a feature in it called "Free Trade Agreement" which does a fair bit of what you have mentioned. Coins and the colored bananas are still segmented regardless of the settings (technical reasons), but major collectables such as golden bananas can be picked up by any kong. If you have already played it, good work 👍
@@Ballaam Do you know of a Hack that adds both 'Tag Anywhere' & 'Free Trade Agreement' for a vanilla playthrough, or can the randomizer be used to only patch in these features without a randomized seed to the Rom?
Its so cool to find this video after being apart of the rando community for almost 6 months now. Playing dk64 when i was about 4 years old is one of my earliest memories. Hes been one of my favorite games of all time but feeling very different when i would revist. I joked with my brother that tag anywhere would actually fix the problems with the game and i found dk rando soon after. Just wanted to say ty to the dk64 community because without you guys i wouldnt have been able to rediscover my favorite of all time and making 4 year old me Keep donkin!
Yeah Tag anywhere absolutely improves the game. I’m a diehard Rareware fan, big Banjo Kazooie fan you get it. I’ve always loved DK64 despite its flaws, the bosses are fun, I love the vibe and atmosphere (especially Fungi Forest cause it was a scrapped area from DK64) and I think it inarguably has Grant Kirkhopes all time best soundtracks ever. I’m glad a mod like this exists because Rare was always so innovative and pushing game concepts to their console limits, having something as backtracky as the tag barrel in the final game always felt like it was a really out of quality mechanic for Rare
I think DK64 is one of those games where the "This game must be out for the holiday season" crunch hurt it a fair bit in terms of polish. If the game had an extra month or two, I think everyone would regard it as highly as Banjo-Kazooie because the commonly quoted minor annoyances would have had time to be resolved. Tag Anywhere goes a long way to helping make the game a bit better for those disgruntled players.
As someone who has beaten the DK64 Randomizer with Tag Anywhere on, thank you. Thank you so much to the entire team on this. The tag barrel has long been the reason I was never able to get back into this game past Angry Aztec. Even though it isn't part of the original game experience, the modified rom/cartridge is actually how I introduce the game to people now, and has convinced several of my friends to actually give 101% completion of this game a try. Beaver Bother is still a nightmare, but hey, progress is a bit at a time.
I just discovered your channel the other day and now here you are uploading your first video in a long time - awesome!! I have Tag Anywhere on my ED64, but I wanted the genuine experience, so when I started DK64 for the first time ever earlier this year, I went with the OG version. I'm almost at 101% and I'm excited to try Tag Anywhere when I come back to it in a year or two! I'm sad I never played this as a kid! I played Banjo Kazooie back when it came out and I loved it. I have no idea why I never played DK64 though, seeing as I loved DKC & DKC2. Anyways, I have now finally played it in my late 30's and I'm happy I finally did! Also, your channel rocks, thanks for all the DK content!
What's even more interesting is that you could probably just play the normal game with that model only and enjoy ir a lot more. And yes this is coming from someone who has played the original game when they were a kid.
This hack was amazing & is now the defacto way to play what was imo an already great game. But this improvement makes it my favorite N64 Rareware Title.
Honestly, if I knew how to hack this game, I would do something similar to what nitro rad said in one of his reviews like putting specific barrels the characters reside in their right colored bananas.
@@Ballaam i can definitely see the value in a randomizer, but i'm more thinking of the casual playing experience. I didnt mind backtracking but i can understand wanting to avoid it. But if there are skips created from it then i think it's a bit much as a standalone for casual play.
dammit, the sick music and character personalities are one of the coolest parts of the game (if you're not a speedrunner or whatever). is there a version of this that doesn't bypass it completely?

DK64 hacks require specific emulators and certain configs to work properly. This is an emulator issue that we have no control over. Here's all the supported emulators and their associated config setup for Rando which will be the same as the regular Tag Anywhere hack github.com/2dos/DK64-Randomizer/wiki/Consoles-and-Emulators
@@kvj1989 Unfortunately we're talking N64 emulation here which is notoriously incredibly game-specific. Different games require very specific changes in order to run properly. The issue here is that, by default, almost all emulators will not recognize DK64 hacks as DK64. As such, a tiny modification to a config file is needed to do so. PJ64 are working on it for pj64 4.0, but unfortunately PJ64 4.0 is very unstable right now due to some of the stuff they're trying to implement. Hacks of games from other consoles (which don't rely as much on game-specific tweaks) or more popular N64 titles (SM64/OOT) don't generally require those things because the emu devs code in support for hacks of those things from the start.
This is for folks who want it. It is needed to some people. Doing a replay makes this flow for me. I didnt need it but I have beaten this 10 times from age 9 to now.
And I really don’t understand how people can’t seem to grasp that the issue people have isn’t with the amount of collectibles but the incredibly tedious and annoying way you need to pick them up
fixed? I completely disagree, this breaks the challenge, as each character is different, some have difficulty getting to the same places, having to take different routes or breaking their heads a little, if you can change at any time the challenges stop making sense, I finished the game in 101% played casually and in less than 6 hours, people cry a lot, there are barrels everywhere, there is teleportation, stop being spoiled and enjoy the game that has beautiful visuals and incredible music, just by staying strolling through the game is already relaxing, tik tok generation blergh
You'd actually be surprised how little the breaks the challenges the game presents in terms of what a player would expect. Sure, there's some gaps which are intended for Chunky which can be easily crossed with Tiny & Twirl, but that's about it. The issue that many have with DK64 which they feel Tag Anywhere resolves is the backtracking for colored bananas. Perhaps that isn't for you and that's fine, different people will have different experiences with this game and this mod. That being said, from experience being an admin of the randomizer community, a lot of people who would never play this game have said that Tag Anywhere has made the game appealing to them, which is undeniably a good thing. PS. I'm a millennial and have never owned a tik tok account, so your assumption that preference towards Tag Anywhere is the result of tik tok/short attention spans/the year of birth is false.
