The lore for Chaos: "Right after the Cataclysms, he existed as a renegade scientist who coveted Blizzard's powers and wanted to take control of the new Urth. But his desire to dictate the process of human evolution proved to be his undoing when he conducted a genetic experiment that went horribly wrong. Instead, he was turned into a disgusting beast."

I always thought Primal Rage was rad as fuck as a kid. I was never really into Street Fighter, I thought Mortal Kombat was pretty cool, but I always got super excited whenever I saw a Primal Rage or Killer Instinct cabinet at an arcade, because they were a bit less common where I lived, so it was like unearthing some hidden secret game back then. Also my younger brother had an Armadon action figure and I always wanted it because he didn't know what Primal Rage was and I felt like it was wasted on him 😂
In the later versions of the arcade game and in at least one of the Midway Arcade Treasures games, the moves are far easier to do. You can still do the original style (hold the buttons, do the motion, then release), but in Version 2.3, you can do simpler versions of the moves. For example, with Sauron: -Primal Scream changes from (1+3) D, U to D, U+1 -Cranium Crusher changes from (1+4) D, U to D, U+4 -Stun Roar changes from (1+3) B, F to B, F+1 -The Grape Crusher Fatality changes from (1+2+3+4) U,D,U,D,D to (1+2+3+4) D, D, D, D, D -Human Eating changes from a command each character had (For Sauron it was [1+2+3+4] D, D, U) to a universal (1+2+3+4) F, D, DF
I remember playing this game a lot at the local ice skating rink (Ice Palace in Aiea, Hawai'i) and I often spent a lot of quarters trying to beat the game for years. Eventually, I did beat this game (using Sauron), just a few days before the game was removed from the place.
I have no idea if anyone mentioned this to you since the video was made a year ago, but PNDK&M made a "Primal Rage - Much Deeper Than You Remember" video that not only goes into what is possible when playing this competitively, but even talks to one of the original developers about the why. Don't know if you will even see this comment in the sea of other notifications, but it might be a thing you would appreciate.
one thing i remember most in this game (snes) was a no cheese effect (the thunder effect and if you keep doing it you see a piece of cheese with the circle with the cross across it) you get when you spam a single special. i got it mostly due to me playing virtigo and teleport spamming all over. it was more broken then other games, as it was close to instant along with her long range she was my main.
Weird coincidence. Yesterday, my brother was over and my family decided to watch random old home videos. One of them was a Christmas where I got a bunch of Primal Rage toys! I only ever got to play it in the arcade but I guess I loved it enough to have my parents find the figures they produced. They came with little worshipers they could eat, fireballs they could spring out of their mouths, Armadon's spikes could stick out more, and Vertigo could squirt water. I vaguely remember there being another color scheme for Armadon that we had as well. Pretty detailed toys for a game that wasn't around very long. Good memories. When I saw this video pop up today I knew I had to take another hit of that nostalgia.
I actually have a couple toys from Primal Rage 2. I was hyped when I saw them cause I thought the game was coming in a big way. One was a skeletal/muscle almost demonic creature. The other was a bipedal sabertooth tiger.
This game is sick. This one and the first Killer Instinct were all I wanted to play in the arcade whenever my mom would give me some quarters at the mall. I had the SNES version to play at home too. I loved how when you'd do a big combo lightning would strike in the background for each hit. I used the apes mostly.
In the early 2000s, some guy on our college floor brought a legitimate arcade version of this onto our floor. It's stayed on our floor ever since. I thought my college buddies and I were the only ones who knew about this game haha.
I remember getting this game when I was 13. I "convinced" my Dad by telling him it was rated T for teen, and I was mature enough for it... Nevermind the fact that I owned Mortal Kombat since I was 7.
Had the pleasure of playing Primal Rage 2 at the Midwest Gaming Classic a few years ago. I guess it was only one of two or three cabinets made for the game before it was canceled. I'd absolutely love to see a "What Happened?" video on it. Was a huge fan of the first game while growing up and wanted so badly for there to be a sequel.
I want more of the lore developed if they ever rerelease or make a sequel for this. Like Vertigo was an interdimensional sorceress turned dinosaur??? Chaos was a man who turned himself into a dinosaur? Blizzard is a benevolent god of wisdom?? I NEED more of the story developed or like a storyline version
"The opposition - Wha happun?" Sauron's new video bemoaning about the lack of challengers during his conquest, don't forget to like and subscribe fellow slave worshipers!
As a kid, I would've been stuck all over a Primal Rage cartoon just like how my little people figures got stuck inside my Sauron toy. They never got out.
I agree in a Killer Instinct style... I would love a modern remake of Alien Storm and Juju Wars not sure if that's correct title it was a platformer with a ape.
This was one of my favorite games when I was a kid. There was this arcade near where I grew up called TnT where I would always go for my birthday and they had a Primal Rage machine that I would basically spend as much of my time on as possible. I have a big nostalgic attachment to this game and one day I hope I can get a cabinet for myself.
God, this takes me back. This was my fighting game, too, back on the Genesis. I mained Diablo, because he was a dinosaur who could breathe fire and his fatality would burn his enemy to skeletons. Amazing.

Gon' drop some Primal Rage factoids for ya'll since last year I revisited the game out of equal parts irony, nostalgia, and wondering if it had any depth! These are all things that apply to the last patched version of the game, 2.3 (at the very least, possibly and probably earlier versions). 1. You don't need to hold down buttons for moves! If you press the two (or more) buttons needed after the direction input, you'll do the move. Holding the buttons down for moves that require up is more helpful though, since when you hold the buttons down you don't move. 2. One of the earliest fighting games to actually show the stun meter! When you're stunned (the second meter, as Matt said) you can mash out of it and the black part of the meter shows you how much stun you have. 3. There's a system that stops (or tries to stop) infinites! When you're doing an infinite, a large symbol below the timer will show "no cheese" and prevents you from doing loops for infinites. 4. There are names for combos! If you do certain combos with a special move as the finishing hit, it'll show the name they made for the combo. 5. When you do enough damage with combos, it'll cause screen effects! When doing ~30% or more damage, you can cause the screen to flash, lightning to appear, and lightning sounds to occur. 6. There is a cut final boss for Primal Rage! The name is "Necrosan", a fleshy bone dragon. It was cut and that's why you do a lame gauntlet instead. However, it was brought in as the final boss for Primal Rage 2. 7. This has weak, medium, strong buttons! The game uses 4 buttons, two head-based and two tail/kick-based, weak and medium. However, if you press both of the head-based or tail/kick-based, you'll get the strongest version of the move. Great for combos! 8. We got hops! If you are familiar with movement in King of Fighters or Third Strike, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you press down before you jump, you'll do a fast hop. If you do it neutral, you'll do a high jump. 9. Last but not least, you can pick your alternate colors for characters! The game features 4 palettes for each character. Hold down one of the attack buttons and then hit start and you'll have an alternate color.
I used to love playing this at the movie theater while waiting to go in and sit down. So weird to play on SNES though, a lot of the button inputs really feel like they're meant to be done on a fight stick/arcade cabinet.

"I don't know why they do that, I mean, I guess they're just into Sauron he's a very handsome boy." I mean have you seen his human form Aric!? He's definitely handsome.
I actually have this game on my laptop/pc and it is GOOD, I play as Talon a lot, yet I don't do the long string combos AT ALL, meaning I do short 2 to 3 hit combos.
Yo Sauron is the best influencer of our generation Im so proud of that guy Edit: i would love a primal rage 2 wha happun, the thing with the beta is pretty interesting honestly
It does need a revival, playing as monsters/dinosaurs that fight for control with humanity as a resource for worship or food. Then again we may just get cgi cutscenes of humans talking and trying to soften the dark feel of Primal world.
I can imagine that being a thing in the main story quest. As you battle the gods, demigods, and other creatures, you can choose to either eat the humans to gain health or desecrate enemy temples to loot bonuses and build yourself up.
I remember playing this Arcades.... It was always Primal Rage .... T2.... MK2... Alien vs Predator and Alien Storm good days. I owned none of them I was happy lol 😂😂😂
Doesn’t WB own the license to this game now? Wished they’d remember and bring this game back with todays graphics and hardware. Still have it on Midway Arcade Classics on PS2 but a new entry would be amazing. Blizzard was my fav.
You can get an arcade Port of primal rate for the Playstation 2 on the Midway arcade treasures volume 3 it has mortal Kombat 2 mortal Kombat 3 arcade edition pit fighter and that one game where kaijus destroy buildings I forget the name you know the green lizard the monkey and the gray wolf
So cool that you played this! Unfortunately only got to play it a few times in an arcade when I was super young. But I did actually have figures of Sauron, Diablo, and Vertigo. Thanks for the nostalgia fix!!
Yes, Playstation Version has the Chitty FMVs. Love it, love the Rage. Still my Main Fighting Game to this Day!!! Oh yeah, the GOAT is the SNES version Baby!! Challenge me Boy, when you're ready to Duel a God!!!
I remember reading about how the developers can't remember the games encryption. It's crazy how no one has cracked it yet. I think the best port is the one in the Midway Collection Volume 2.
This is a game that totally needs a What Happun as there was supposed to be a primal rage 2. There are arcade ROMs of this primal rage but finding one that doesn't have issues is nearly impossible. The arcade version is much better as the characters have more frames of animation. I found the controls of this game a lot easier than traditional fighting games and the only one I could do combos in for a while. This game was the first fighting game I was ever able to beat in the arcade on $0.50. Great video!
I was the perfect age when this game came out, around 7. I have all the action figures for the default skins. Played the shit out of the game at the arcade at the mall, on my friend's Genesis and on my SNES. Would love to see a new one.
When I was a kid this came out and my friends and I all wanted it, but we never got it until much later. For some reason my Dad was going to get it for me but didn't.
Been hoping and begging for a remake or sequel for over 20 years! I loved Primal Rage when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite arcade games ever back in the 90's.
I had the PC port of this back then, I preferred MK of course, but this was still my jam. I was a total mark for any game with the slightest hint of bloodshed, regardless of how good or bad the gameplay was, haha. I miss when my standards were as simple as "Is the gameplay good? No? Is it cool/edgy? Yes? 10/10".
i remember playing this in the Meriden mall in CT when i was 5 or 6 and i left my winnie the pooh hat on the joystick and making my grandpa go get my hat back after the mall was closed and he actually got it for me. this was about 25 years ago but thats how i always remember primal rage.
There's a pizza place near me that still has a Primal Rage machine. It was definitely a cool game to see as a child because it had that "Mortal Kombat, but with dinosaurs" appeal, and what kid in the '90s wouldn't immediately fall in love with that? That said, having gone back to it, I can't say actually playing it was the joy I hoped it would be, but it's hard to deny the very solid idea that was at its core.
Absolutely adored this game back in the day and still think it's super damn cool in a lot of ways. Don't think I had any idea about Primal Rage 2 so please do a video on that.
My encounter with this was I was 6 and an uncle gave me an armadon toy for christmas. It fell apart really quick after a few falls, but I thought that while he looked cool, I wanted a real dinosaur instead. Still think it needs a revival. I love the character designs and the stages.
Oh, man, I loved Primal Rage back in the day. I used to play it all the time at arcades. Talon was my main. I even had the action figures too. Really wish they would bring it back.
You think the intro was good? The Saturn version gives every character an animated intro and outro. The visuals combined with the matter-of-fact narration is like something from a museum exhibit.
I remember back when I was a kid. I had either Sauron or Diablo. I don't know what ever happened to them. MY grandmother actually took the little minis that came from the toy and put them away so I wouldn't lose them. I'd love to find these figures.

I actually have this game on my laptop/pc and it is GOOD, I play as Talon a lot, yet I don't do the long string combos AT ALL, meaning I do short 2 to 3 hit combos.
Yo Sauron is the best influencer of our generation
Im so proud of that guy
Edit: i would love a primal rage 2 wha happun, the thing with the beta is pretty interesting honestly
Never realized that the Trex roar is that same sound as the alien's in Area 51 arcade game.
man , this was the most amazing game in the arcade back then ..
Browns and beige! He wears earth tones because he lives on a planet 🌎
Man...this really makes me wish for a new Primal Rage.
Just think of Extreme Dinosaurs as the closest thing we got to a Primal Rage cartoon.
Man, I want another Primal Rage. EDIT: Also, I think I found the poster that Matt was talking about that Boris Vallejo did.
Had a dream when I was a kid where Sauron was chasing me in a destroyed city landscape. Why I remember it, idk, but it was pretty cool.
This game was all the RAGE back in the day!
I would love to see this game get a modern remake. It would look incredible. Pity the second game wasnt finished. It looked pretty cool on MAME.
Hey, dont disrespect my queen Vertigo like that. She is best girl.
SEGA Saturn version is the best one to own
Every dinosaur kid i knew in the 90s LOVED this game, including me. I only played on SNES, though. The PS1 intro was really neat! 10/10 good graphics
To this date, the arcade rom hasn't been cracked to be used for emulators. Rly wished there was a good port of this game.
I remember reading about how the developers can't remember the games encryption. It's crazy how no one has cracked it yet.
I think the best port is the one in the Midway Collection Volume 2.
an air throw via dinosaur?!?!
This series had an awesome toy line, and the figures even came with tiny lil Worshippers
One of my favorites from the 90's
Been hoping and begging for a remake or sequel for over 20 years!
I loved Primal Rage when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite arcade games ever back in the 90's.
The unreleased PR2 rom is fully playable with MAME.
I had no idea there was a primal rage 2, just thought it died off after the original
Man I love this game. Has to be my most favorite arcade cabinet of all time.
The best port I played is on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for the original Xbox
A primal rage 2 what happened would definitely be interesting. and i recommend snk's king of the monsters for a good old kaiju slobberknocker.
In the late 90's there was a roller skate place near me that had this and sf2 hyper fighting, I never skated there lol
The visuals combined with the matter-of-fact narration is like something from a museum exhibit.
this needs to be remade immediately!!!!!
I remember back when I was a kid. I had either Sauron or Diablo. I don't know what ever happened to them. MY grandmother actually took the little minis that came from the toy and put them away so I wouldn't lose them. I'd love to find these figures.
The galloping ghost arcade in the Chicago area is the only place in the world you can find a fully functioning primal rage 2 arcade cabinet
Primal Rage was my first fighting game and it’s such a trip to look back on it.
