Ferrocene Synthesis

  • In this video I make ferrocene using FeCl2*4H2O, cyclopentadiene, KOH, DMSO, and THF. I first start by cracking dicyclopentadiene into the monomer cyclopentadiene. The ferrocene synthesis is then carried out with the reaction between small amounts of KCp generated insitu from the KOH and cyclopentadiene with the FeCl2 DMSO solution.
The most common solvent used in this preparation is DME, however this can be substituted with more common solvents such as THF and diethyl ether.

Thank you For you effort and time ! I've been told Ferrocene synthesis is a test of skill (even though we routinely use ultra low liquid Nitrogen temperatures in labs which are way tougher). I sure learned a lot by your video. Its so heartening to know so many Chemists like this author upload detailed videos such as this; though they may never be monetised. I salute you friend. I am located in Pune India . You truly are one of the many Gems which occasionally get discovered.

Very nice synthesis! The only time I've made this compound was from the decomposition of [CpFe(CO)2]2, and that was an awful reaction- both the synthesis of the dimer and the decomposition. Trying to filter out the product from a solution that seemed a cross between motor oil and tar....

Definitely a nice trophy chem to have! I'll likely make some acetylferrocene once I have a little Ac2O. I plan to make some more sensitive metallocenes once some new glassware I ordered arrives!

I wonder why you do not use an oil-bath for heating. It would increase your heating surface and safe you some time. Nice Video anyways.
