Love the video man! I'm trying to get into Salmon fishing this year but I'm a bit intimidated by all these popular places and all the people around. I go to school in Syracuse so Pulaski, Oswego and Altmar are all very manageable for a day trip. Any tips on how I should get started? I don't got a fly rod yet but probably will be getting one soon, not sure if I should use it for my first season though lol
I did not start fishing Salmon on a Fly Rod until just last year. I did about 3 Salmon Seasons fishing with traditional spinning rod set ups using 20lb Monofiliment Line to a 40lb Barrel swivel and then a 15lb Length of Flurocarbon Line to hold my spilt shot & float to a 20lb Barrel Swivel and then my 10 to 12lb Tippet with a hook and bait. Go to make sure you have a rod rated to handle Salmon. They pull with a ferocity unmatched by most other fresh water fish and could easily snap fishing poles. Now so far as where to go... There really is not going to be anywhere that is not crowded with people. But what I can suggest is to go to a spot that is popular like in this Video I am just above Wire Pool but a long way above me is Altmar Pool. Both are popular areas and can get crowded however, if you have a good set of waders and you are confident enough in your wading abilities... there are pockets you can walk to between major pools where there are very few people around and you have just as good of a chance to hook into a Salmon as anyone else. But With November quickly approaching, I would temper expectations of hooking into a fresh Salmon or least one that is good to eat. Most should be, if not already, rotting from the inside out. But do not get discouraged as I have caught fresh Salmon as late as the 2nd Week of November and Steelhead should be pushing up to feast on Salmon Eggs as we speak! So still plenty of Big Game Fishing to be had at Salmon River For Months and Months to Come!

I have always heard the pool I was fishing at as Wire Pool. The progression going down river being Upper Fly Zone, Altmar, Schoolhouse, Wire, Ellis Cove, and so on down the river. I know I have fished a pool between the Altmar Pool & what I know as Wire Pool. By my understanding... that pool between Altmar and Wire would be Schoolhouse.
Dangerous as all hell. Put that toy net away. You don‘t grab them fish unless you want to go to the hospital. I pulled 6 hooks off one fish this last week. yeah tail em! Those guys are chest deep with a loaded rod aimed at their face.
Salmon River is dangerous. No doubts about that. But it is a risk everyone takes. It's how we mitigate those risks that help keep everyone safe (though accidents happen which is why I know First Aid). Also, I would dive in chest deep for anyone I was helping land a fish. So I respect the heck out of everyone who is kind enough to help me out on the water.
