My First Time Shooting Archery at 70m in Over 3 Years! | My Score was Surprising

  • I haven't shot archery at 70 meters since 2017 at @WorldArcheryTV Worlds in Mexico City. Bringing the shakes and the struggle to you on camera for comedic affect of course.... My score was quite shocking despite the struggle through the measly 48 arrows I shot.

That was a REALLY fun one to watch, seriously. Really enjoyed the down-to-earth and candid willingness to share your first scoring round in years with us. Archery is something you performed at the highest level for years, IMO, the muscle memory and deep understanding of your shot and gear that comes from that, it makes sense to me you found ways to compensate for any rust that set in from the 3-year gap and got a score you were happy with. As always, keep up the great work! Looking forward to future content! I will post a couple content suggestions in discord.

I know that was a hell of a struggle Jake, but I found it fascinating and instructive. Hearing and seeing you deconstruct your process as you work back through things was very informative. It also emphasised just how difficult shooting from that distance really is. As out of practice as you are, you're still hitting the 9s and 10s most of the time, even while shaking like a puppy, critiquing your own form, worrying about the camera and presentation, and asking for content suggestions. I can't even see a target 70m away haha.
I'd love to see more of these videos, to be honest, seeing you rebuild your skills I find to be a very down to earth way to see what to do right and wrong. Excellent video dude!

Love this video so much!! Thanks for shooting & showing it! It really puts my own experiences into context and helps me to understand my own shortfalls and inadequacies and how they relate to practice, experience, and the whole shooting process. I mean, you now, and me at my best in a shoot-off, you'd still be kicking my arse, but seeing you as a former Olympic champion experience the same struggles with the bow weight, the same struggles with fatigue, or just the need to stop a shot and try to reconnect with the process, it really helps with understanding the value of putting in the work.
    Thanks so much for sharing!

Loved watching you shoot. And the best part for me is that you were reminding yourself and telling yourself off for simple things that I think I should remember all the time! So that was pleasing that I shouldn't expect to get each shot perfect, and go back to my shot routine like you did. Awesome content Jake. Please don't splice together videos of you shooting the different bows. Keep them all individual and feedback like this one!

I think I have watched nearly all of your videos and this one is for me the best so far. Absolutely what I'm looking for. Just shooting a short round with your thoughts on each shot as commentary. I'd like to hear more on what you were focussing on during a particular shot (is it consistent? is it the end of the follow through? is it messed up when you get the shakes etc?) and how it played out. But honestly just more of the same please. Superb content. Inside my head on the shooting line is a much less lonely place now;) Many thanks.

Loved this video. You did better on this day than I did on my best day ever by a bit! That was impressive. I would like to see you repeat this experiment with a intermediate price range setup, and then with a budget option. That would be cool. Or shoot using a more budget option bow vs a club archer with a more expensive bow.

  • @davidfuller8967

This helped me a great deal. I dug myself out of very deep target panic hole finally after many years. I am shooting better than I ever have but at 60 yoa and not ever having great upper body strength, I was feeling like I was the only one struggling with getting shots off and beating myself up for it. I have watched your videos on exercises and weight training. I’m trying to implement some of it especially to improve my left shoulder stability which is where I break down. However it is difficult because I suffer from old back, neck, and shoulder injuries and I have to go at it easy. My posture has been poor too and I’m working on fixing that too. I also appreciate the self commentary. Seeing your self talk though diagnostic, is a lot more self positive than mine. I am also working on your suggestions for the mental aspects. I am not a recurve shooter but all of it still applied to the things I am struggling with. Well done sir.

It can be amazing what you can get away with when you go strong at the target. Really appreciated this video, I have noticed how demanding switching back and forth from shooting barebow to olympic recurve can be. I find the Olympic recurve to be very exacting on my form whereas barebow feels like it can tolerate a little more 'slop'. I chalk it up to maybe my subconscious making more adjustments automatically with barebow. Thanks for all your content, have really appreciated how informative it has been.

Hi Jake, great video. Good to see a real pratice shoot with all the bad shots included. Makes it much more relatable to us amateurs. You mentioned the bow is tuned, perhaps you do a basic tuning setup using your spare bows just like buying it all new from shop from scratch. Obviously you dont need to go through everything in great detail as you already covered most of it, but just applying all your advice for real in one basic tuning setup, eg, nocking point, centreshot, button stiffness, braceheight, bareshaft tuning, walkback. Then a fine tuning video as a follow up would be great!

    Great shooting!
Would be interesting to see you shoot a 38# bow or so and see how the results compare.

Awesome to see you challenge yourself!
If you’re looking for some content to cover, I’d like to put something in the pool as well.
I’ve been an indoor olympic recurve shooter for many years due to the lack of accessible outdoor 70m archery ranges.
I’m doing indoor competitions in my region but I’m aspiring to do outdoor archery. Until I find a good place to consistently go and train outside at distance, would you have any tips that can help us indoor shooters to prepare for outdoor shooting?

Great stuff! Enjoy your honesty. I’m an older guy, 61 and I get fatigued pretty fast, if I don’t practice every day. Wondering what your thoughts are, about keeping going, when it starts to turn to crap? Can you do more harm than good if you’re making bad shots?

Hi Jake! I‘m really flashed by what you are capable to do after such a long time! Really really impressive!
So what about making a video about arrow spine. I mean what would you define as a good/bad arrow in relation to tolerances of a static spine. And how much does it really affects the score if the arrows are not let’s say perfect. And what are your thoughts about static and dynamic spine.
Second idea of mine was to make a video about shooting field archery. To tell people what it really is, how much fun it is to shoot and what to look at 😉
    Greetz and stay safe

Nice back tension in the final shots.

Your worst end was better than my best ever. Great to see you back at Olympic Recurve Jake. Hadn’t realised Benny Hill had found fame across the pond (I’m a Brit) but, I suppose your own famous comic, Donald Trump, has found great fame here so, why not?

    Great video.
Now you've been shooting barebow for a while, how about shooting the new 50m barebow round?
Seeing you struggle to hold long enough to take a shot, looks like you could do with five pounds lower draw weight?
