I watched Ultraman in the 60s. It has more spin-off series and movies than any other series. I own many of them on DVD and blu-Ray. By-the-way, what you call a "Lightsaber" is called "The Beta Capsule." The Plunger is shaped like one.
It makes sense for Spooky to release two different Pins using the same layout. Gary Stern mentioned years ago that it takes over a Million dollars to design and code a new Pin from scratch, but only $400,000 to retheme an existing layout, with new code and scoring rules of course. I think that Spooky used the same coders on these two machines, but with their later duel release of "Looney Tunes" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" they assigned a different team of coders to each table. In the 70s Gottlieb were the kings at this. For example they released 5 tables with different names, themes, rules, and scoring but the exact same layout.

I agree. It allows them to leverage their design and go an entirely different direction with essentially the same layout. I also watched Ultraman as a kid and was thrilled when this title came out. It likely would never have been done as a stand alone design due to limited demand. A lot of people were not familiar with the title but for those of us who are it was nice. Glad to see they have continued to develop the code.

It's really interesting. For awhile Sam Stern owned and operated Williams Electronics. Some time in the 60s Williams was bought by Seeberg, which made Jukeboxes. That was followed by Sam Stern buying Chicago Coin in 1977, which among other things made Pinball machines. Stern Electronics wound up owning Chicago Coin's assets without taking on their debt. Gary Stern ran the Pinball division. Shortly there after Stern Electronics bought Seeberg, forming Stern / Seeberg.
In 1986 Data East bought Stern Electronics renaming it Data East USA, keeping on Gary Stern to run the Pinball division. Data East made 27 different Pins. In 1994 Sega bought Data East's U.S. Pinball division. Sega made 19 Pins plus 2 unreleased prototypes from '94 to '99, when they shut the division down. That same year Gary Stern bought Sega Pinball, renaming it Stern Pinball in the process.
The Stern family owns the rights to the pins made by Chicago Coin, Stern Electronics, Data East, Sega (USA only; Sega also made pins in Japan and Spain), and Stern. Atari owns the rights to 17 of the arcade video games manufactured by Stern Electronics.

Thanks for the info. I am aware of a lot of that history but not all. The Sega japan games are all very very difficult to find although there is at least one museum in japan with a large number of examples. The Sega spanish pins were largely made under the Sega S.A. name and they continued to make those games long after they stopped making Japanese pins. Examples of those games, while not entirely common, are definitely easier to locate.
