    Context matters. The lean back (and pull) is for a supported knee strike where I am holding onto the other person in a clinch and pulling them into the knee strike.
    He is showing the proper way to knee strike from punching or trapping range, just outside of clinch range, without a neck tie up/control. The chin down and hip swivel can still be applied in either range/supported or unsupported.
    Thank you for the videos and your work to document these fighters and training methods!!!

      So in karate the swivel hip knee is more appropriate because you are not allowed to clinch. Most, but not all, karateka also practice the rocking chair knee. I will try and practice both.

    • @8limbsUs
      @8limbsUs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      No, the "lean back" Muay Thai knee that this is contrasted to is not an engaged knee. It's a longer knee often used by more femeu fighters. The lean back gives more length to the knee, but doesn't put you in position to keep striking, and Yodkhunpon has said opens you to counter strikes.

    I love this series with the former 80's and 90's greats. Thanks Sylvie! I learned something similar in terms of not leaning back years ago in Thailand. A feature of these type of techniques thrown where you retain shape and stance more readily is that they emphasise balance and so can score better.

    Yeah you're right on that point if exactly and you always got to be thinking about posture and stance like you're thinking about because if you balance is the key to martial arts anytime you get a tennis shot or a golf shot or you know you're in martial arts and and you have poor balance you're selling yourself up for a judo throw or a maybe a keto throw or you could be seriously or with an elbow or knee people going to close the gap on you quickly when they see it in a poor defensive position out of balance I will quickly close the gap and then take

    Yes, this is very good. It's very easy to just push someone over (and it's really bad for the back if this happens), when they lean back into the knee. We used to do it all the time. It's also much easier to see it coming.

  • @douglashagan65
    @douglashagan65 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Right he's maybe he's getting some sway from the hips but the way you're doing it is excellent technique if you're inside but he is moving from the outside to inside seat so what you're learning now is you're moving from the outside to the inside to attack quickly so that is a hop or it's like hop keto he's coming in on you now so you utilizing movement mobility and it's showing you how to use your hips to get generate power

    This proves there are many ways to execute a technique. I’m not too fond of this particular style because the body mechanics aren’t as efficient. I think there is an In between technique where you still turn your shoulder and hip together but don’t lean backwards.

  • @douglashagan65
    @douglashagan65 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well that's effective technique you know because he's getting all in there and angular momentum especially when you're stepping through that punch your kick you know that near elbow that momentum is going to put a lot of power you know it's like we went through the striking when you step in to the opponent step and punch you know if you either a left or right of a stance Ford stance you're going to get a lot of extra power for that

  • @douglashagan65

    That's good thing this guy has Passover his whole body because we're going to hit every single pressure point and vital point also if we start getting into pressure points and acupressure points and vital points you know these are what ends fights really quickly but that's either going to kill the guy or it's going to be a KO situation but if your standard street fight if you're not trying to damage the guy permanently then we're just going to get to you know like a general area like a Target like a midsection up under the jaw for that elbow elbows coming up under the jar always real nice neutralizers

    Like you can see in many fights the lean back works amazingly for many different reasons, then for this guy his reasons are different so he prefers this method, rather than "This is the way you SHOULD do it" is it not more "This is a way you COULD do it" and each forms their own style?

    Make sure you keep your hands up you know your face ready for some type of you know strike from the hand or in a foot while this is going on but you're using elbow's knees and close quarters but notice how you went from from far away to close because you close the gap with your footwork you cut your hop in that closes the Gap quickly and now you're using elbows and knees inside and then you can hop back outside whereas now you're into kicking range and then you can hop back in and then you're into hand and striking range so we're going to constantly be moving from three different ranges because closing the Gap is what makes a fighter the best in the world is ability to utilize footwork and close the gap and then be able to get from the offensive defensive position quickly so this takes a lot of work we're going to get into footwork mobility moving around the ring after we've utilized every different type of strike there is and hands feet and elbows and then we'll go deeply into defense because you're only as good as your defense you're off at his worthless if you don't have a strong solid defense if you can defend yourself then you it's easy for you to go on to offense

    • @globoyflemming9315
      @globoyflemming9315 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree 1,000%. Leaning back always put a lot of pressure on my lower back and my hips, it eventually caused me to tear my labrum because I'd force my hips so far forward it just wasn't good for me. I naturally have a more anterior tilt in my pevlis so thrusting my hips forward is the opposite of what my hips want to do. Techniques are so heavily based on the mechanics of the individual, it's good to experiment!

    • @baqikenny
      @baqikenny 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you are leaning to get more range it's understandable from a long knee surprise attack standpoint, I mean don't change your ways, treat it as a different tactic to add into your personal arsenal of tactics, the Yodkhunpon method takes leaning away and instead use better stepping in footwork to for the knee and chain the elbow, it works for his holistic tactics in and out but might not be something you'd always fancy and natural at, so what I would say is do it as a closing in knee for clinching purpose and use your old leaned-back kneeing for something else, maybe it's for locking your opponent up in a clinch position, but do try adding instead of replacing, everything has its use

    Yeah just moving that knee upward you know driving it up act like you're throwing a kick but you're just going to use the name and it's the same thing but you can hop in like hot keto and then you know grab the guy behind the neck and then drive your knee into his midsection real quick and then then move out again back into a defensive position and move out of his range so that now you can go back and do it effective position from the offensive strike

  • @ingongoyama3995
    @ingongoyama3995 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    This totally depends on tactics. his way you evade punches with an angle and blocking and pushing. the other way you use range but you can adjust and still block punches. I would mix the two and keep them guessing. If you have an opponent who likes to sweep then his way i s better then also but if you have a shorter oponnent then leaning back could be better.
