I've used both the Nature's Head and the Separett 9215. I prefer the Separett because I don't have to buy peat, noir, or sawdust and those things take up space and also emptying the Nature's Head is a pain in the butt.
I currently use a DIY compost toilet (bucket system) I purchased the sunmar toilet for my tiny home build because it is the only commercial toilet approved for my county. After opening it, I promptly returned it. Its HUGE. I will just continue with the bucket system for now, someday when Im much older I may go to a commercial one again. Ive read conflicting reports on many of them about ease of keeping them clean, clog free, and dumping. great video tho! Thank you for sharing
I know not everyone can't have a water flushing toilet. But the reason a install one is because i couldn't do all that ..my wife is not Going to deal with it we get other people in ourvan that come visit I don't see my self moving other's people shit lol..so we install a full bath in our 170 extended with flushing toilet..we have huge water tank..because we take showers every day..we only use our van on weekends or short vacations. But because we want to feel like home our van is fully loaded..i want my wife to have every comfort that she has home To have it in the van..and we do feel like home but smaller. 😆 We have stove oven. Microwave Full bath refrigerator wacher dryer combo..nice little thing..for emergencies home stereo system And I do not drink alcohol but For visitors I have a beautiful bar But we pay a price for all that. Our van is huge parking in a regular parking is not possible Unless is a huge parking the van is a 350 daully 170 extended 😬 So you guys know. is big
@@davidramossalsologoporexse2469 Wow! That sounds pretty luxury for living tiny! :D I got rid of my washer dryer combo. I cant wait to get a van or rv for traveling!
Thank you for sharing and explaining🙂. So it's basically an outhouse that's indoors. Cool👍. Growing up we used one. Was the popular thing back in the 70's in old houses. I'm planning to buy land and build a tiny house on it that's completely off grid. I'm watching all sorts of videos to get ideas because I'm am a fish out of the pond on this.
Haha, yes basically an indoor outhouse. Lol. But cleaner! The outhouse (some) uses water and chemicals if I'm not mistaken unless it's an offgrid one. I'm kind of newer to compost toilets myself. Ive never had any other one than the separett. I bet they're all a different experience! 😊🏡
Ya I'm just reading all this now & first thing I thought of with young couples moving in together and it sounds like a relationship killer! I'm perplexed that you can wash clothes take a shower but no one has figured out how to install a flushing toilet with a separate disposable container? Or if you're dumping it outside why Can't it be diverted to septic tanks located wherever you are? I guess you'd have to pay a disposal fee? I'm out on the tiny house thing! I'm sticking with my Apartment!
Thank you, I truly appreciate open honesty. When it comes to this kind of stuff the clearer the better so thanks so much. I’ll look more into this toilet. First time I hear of it.
You're welcome! I have a couple other videos that explain some of the habits we have and how to handle them. Thank you for watching! I'm glad you appreciated it!
I live in a tiny home and I love it. I lived in my car before for three years and I have my whole journey vlogged on my channel.❤ I have a compost and it makes me feel like a free fairy 😂
Nicely done! Informative and tasteful. Somehow it helps to know you are working with real waste, though hidden. After all, that's the idea. I just purchased a Separett Villa and am building up the courage to do what it seems very few have, to install it in my REGULAR HOUSE (master bathroom). I have a big garden and a 3-compartment compost setup and am looking forward to closing the nutrient loop. For your situation, I envision some day a business or city service that provides "night soil" pickup from campgrounds and elsewhere where folks can't compost their own.
Thank you!! Wow! That is something that is different and I havent heard of before! Installing a composting toilet in a regular house! And you are all set up with a compost system! When i get land I'll be doing the same with a composting system on the land. I LOVE your idea about a "night soil" pick up from places that dont have a way to dispose of it.
Thank u for sharing. I’m in the middle of building a guest house and no ability to have sewage pipe. This option u demonstrated is very interesting option. Thank u!
Thank you. This is a wonderful video. Thank you for breaking this model down and showing more of the inner workings. Not gross at all. I'm considering one of these.
Thank you for that! I was really hoping it would help so I'm glad it has been helping others! You wont regret it if you go with this toilet! I have a couple more videos about my composting toilet that are also informative and may help! It may seem like the other videos would deter people from getting this toilet, as stated in some of the comments, but I still vouch for it and would recommend it any day! :D th-cam.com/video/aA47SQ9UJQk/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/n6XS41NAqCs/w-d-xo.html
I didn't feel that you were inappropriate or too honest at all I thought you were very ladylike I thought it was a really good video you answered a lot of my questions thank you very much
@terrim.602 yes, they are great toilets. I kind of like the idea of the outhouse, too. I may just incorporate one into my community! Thanks for the idea! 😊
Thank you! So you don't have to use any sawdust with this unit? Also, right now you say you're at a campground and just use their dumpster but let's say you're on the road for a few days. Where do you dispose of garbage? (I've never even been in an RV so I'm just starting to learn this stuff)
With this unit, no saw dust is needed. I'm not longer at the campground and have been to 2 other places since then and now im on my land. The second and third place was also dumped in the trash. Since getting my land, I took the compost toilet out for now because I'm renting it out and I put a regular flush toilet in there. When I move back into the tiny house, I'll probably use the compost toilet again. I have never traveled on the road in my house, so I imagine you'd connect it to a gray and black water tank and dump at a dump spot before continuing ypur travels.
Thank you for the demo!! I’m thinking of building an apartment above my garage for my parents (with an elevator of some kind) and am trying to figure out how to do the plumbing as it will be down the hill from our septic mound. This might work! And just remember…everybody poops!!!
Ooo, I definitely want one of these. Me and some buddies plan to build our own place and we do not want a sewage system or water main. We want to collect our own water from the rain and to compost as much of our waste and trash as we can since we plan to have a pretty large farm area so we can grow our own food and such.
That sounds amazing! I'm slowly working towards offgrid although I may never get there. Solar has been a thought, though! I just got a compost bin for my waste for this toilet. Have yet to set it up but I'll finally be doing it the way it's supposed to be done. 🙂
I was about to ask about where the liquid goes, lol. This one looks like a decent compromise between full on composting and a cassette toilet (the one with the container for liquid that you haul out and empty separately). Seems like this is what I should go for when I get my place, rather than the Nature's Head...
The urine is diverted out the bottom and I have a hose connected into the sewer. The other options for urine diversion with this toilet are diverting it into a hole of rocks to filter it or to connect to a grey water tank and empty it regularly. I preferred not having to empty anything. 🙂
@@ducksinarowpatience yes, I realize that now. Maybe I'll redo the whole video but better. Even now I hate that the music us loud. Lol (Different editor back then)
One question how much urine is stored before it has to be empty and the other is I saw years ago an RV that had the toilet that cremates the poop by way of propane it was pretty interesting
This toilet has a blue pipe that is stubbed out of the bottom of the house. It can be drained into a french latrine set up, connected to a a sewer or septic or be drained into a holding tank..size of your choice, so you can dump it after its filled. I believe the toilet you're talking about is the incinerator toilet. I think theres one called Incinolet.
The urine pipe is stubbed out the bottom of the house and can ve disposed several different ways. In this spot I had it connected to the campgrounds sewer. Another spot, it ran onto the ground through pvc pipe. You can also create a french latrine set up where you put a filtration system of rocks and things below the urine pipe so when it drains into the rocks, it's being filtered. You can also connect it to a waste container and dump it somewhere. In my current spot on my new land, I have it connected to septic tank pipes.
Nicely done. We litteraly just bought our cabin and don't have anything but raw land. I'm looking into options as septic system is so expensive. We plan on just staging out there now for a weekend here and there so I'm thinking something like this will have to do. I have some questions tho...does it stink all the time or is that was the fan and pipe is for? What do you do with the urine? Where does it go? Sims thinking of telling my teenage boy to find a tree and take a shovel 😂😂
Thats excellent!! A step in the right direction. It doesnt stink all the time, no. Only really when you change it out since you have to open it and be exposed to the waste. Until then, yes, the fan works to start the drying process and pull out any smell while it sits there. The urine is stubbed out the bottom of the house and can go into a holding gray water tank, or it can be diverted into septic or sewer system or in some cases you can create a french latrine of sorts and filter the urine through a series of rocks and sands to allow it to go into the ground. I have done all these except the holding tank. In one place we even let the water run onto the ground but it did create a mucky mess so the rocks and sand filteation would have been better. Since this video, i have changed out the compost toilet to a regular flush toilet for now because im renting the tiny house on Airbnb.
You're welcome! I personally see more pros than cons once you get past the tedious things that need to be done. Currently, I'm planning on renting out my tiny house on wheels and it was suggested that I get a regular flush toilet installed so I recently did that. When I move back into the tiny house, I'll use the compost toilet again.
Thank you! Glad it was informative! I personally thought the natures head looked scary to me because I dont have the strength to lift that big thing by myself so the Separett was the way to go for me! I have 2 more separett compost toilet videos coming up in the coming weeks/months! Stay tuned...TONS more information! 😊
@fiorellacr-f346 the smell isn't really noticeable when the toilet lid is closed.... Not only because it's closed, but because there's a fan inside the toilet area that vent out the odors, as well as helping to start the drying process.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed! The liquid tube is stubbed out of the bottom of the house and diverted into the sewer with a connected garden type hose. You can also have the liquid run out into a hole full of rocks to filter it or buy a grey water tank and divert it into there.
How often do you have to empty it? I saw an add that said 4 to 6 weeks with a family of 4! Which seemed.... not true. I just have a DIY 5 gallon bucket in a box, with garbage bag, and use peat moss or another material to get the moisture out of the waste (also have a urine diverter too). It works pretty well, it's just not pretty LOOKIN. But I was just curious about how often you have to empty it, because for just me i'm emptying it every 2 weeks.. But I do take into account i'm adding the other material to it as well.
I was emptying it every 3 weeks to 1 month. The compost bags say 3 weeks but since I was using plastic bags, I'd do it monthly. Since this video, I have replaced the compost toilet with a regular flush toilet for the convenience of my Airbnb guests. When I move back in I'll switch it back. When I do switch back I want to try to find a better way to compost the waste.
The compostable bags that should be used need to be changed every 3 weeks. If you use a regular garbage bag, it could go longer. Yes, it does smell when you change it. But that's the only time you really smell it unless liquids have gotten back there and bacteria starts forming.
Yes, for the most part. It helps until you go to change it...which then you have to open it and ultimately are able to smell the contents. When the lid is closed, the fan draws out the scent.
No, not on this toilet. This one doesn't need any kind of mixing or filler like wood chips or pete moss or coco coir. They send along compostable bags and the fan starts the drying process. Then you'd essentially want to continue the composting process by putting it in dirt outside in a designated bin and tumbling it.
@@immersivesoundscape777 When the fan is on it helps draw out the smell but to be honest, it does smell when changing it out. You're removing still drying waste. Dont let anyone tell you it doesnt smell when changing it. Lol 😅😉
Serious question. Being out bush maybe you get ill from bad food, hygiene etc. What is recommended in times of diarrhoea, bowel issues kids vomits etc. It's not like I plan on wanting it but is it better to use a bucket for those very rare circumstances as to not damage the operation of the toilet?
Thanks for your question! That video you are inquiring about is actually already filmed and I'll be releasing it in a few weeks. I talk about all these issues and how to deal with them. But you are correct, what are we eating or doing to ourselves that cause us to have irregular bowl movements such as diarrhea and constipation. But since I dont teach WHAT to eat or not eat to prevent it i just show how to handle it if it happens. Stay tuned for that video. I think it's a good one! 😉❤
As far as it being better to go in a bucket...the bucket toilet is much better for the earth. You dont waste potable water every time you flush like you would a regular flush toilet. The only things to really learn about are cleaning it and what to do when those situations happen.
Oh nice! I recently put my tiny house on Airbnb so i switched out the compost toilet for a regular flush for the guests. When i move back in, I'll switch it back.
The urine is stubbed it the bottom of the tiny house and can be dealt with in 3 ways...you can attach it to a holding tank for gray water, you can attach it to a sewer or septic system or you can create somewhat of a french latrine and drain it through rocks and such.
I just purchased the Separate to install in my RV. However, I have not found an installation video specific to RV's. If you have seen one, I sure would appreciate a link or at least a push in the right direction, thanks!
Geeat choice! Hmmm, I have not seen an installation video for installing a separett in an RV either. I think there are a few for tiny houses. But yes, I imagine it would be different set up. I'll pass along a link if I come across one!
That's easy enough. So all the waste is dry? (what do you do with the urine?) I was thinking of getting a composting toilet but I'm not sure what make would be available here in the UK.
Bought two small houses on the lake, 600 sq-ft each. Renovated the first, only to find out the septic is in the water table (flooded), not good, and it's winter and I'm slated to move in at the end of the month. No way to put in a holding tank for at least 4 more months. So instead of pay an extra $8000+ and keep renting, I bought a Separett for my small house. Going to have to use it for at least 4-6 months. I spoke with the company who sold me it, he recommended having a good outdoor fire pit and burn the waste every 2 weeks, then all that is left is ash. I have a grey water system, so the pee-tube drains right into it. Wish me luck!
Omg, burning it!! I didnt even think of that when it came to disposing the waste if I didnt have a pile of dirt to allow it to compost in. Thanks for this idea! I may just try this! You'll have to let us know how it works out!
I have this same toilet in my 1200 SF house and I use it as a proper composting toilet full time. I like it a great deal. I would suggest that if you are bagging in lots of plastic as per this video, that you do not put it into the regular garbage and that you need to dispose of it at a proper waste station instead of putting human waste into a landfill. I only use proper compostable bags and follow the manufacturers instructions though I transfer the compostable bag into a waterproof slightly larger storage bin elsewhere in the yard to go through the composting process. I add a shovel of regular dirt ( microbes ), a composting starter and wood chips to accelerate the composting action. The urine is collected in one of three ways with diversion valves in the basement below. I have the option to direct it to the garden septic field, to a mulch basin or to collect it in a pail to mix 1 : 10 with water to use as high nitrogen fertilizer in the garden. Urine is sterile and a highly effective fertilizer for plants. A person does not need to be as fussy as shown in the video and proper disposal is really important. Composting processes kill the pathogens in the human waste. As long as the fan is running there is no discernable odor in the bathroom. it only takes about 5 - 10 minutes to clear odors from the room after changing out the toilet and plugging the fan back in.
Great advice! Looks like you have been using this compost toilet for way longer than me. I am still getting used to using it, caring for it, etc. But in the future when I get more settled in a place where I can actually DO what you are suggesting I do, then I will implement your ideas...until then I have to do it the way I know how. I dont even think we are allowed to divert our urine, even if mixed with water onto the campground floor (garden)....we MUST divert it into the sewer. So I'm just following campground rules. Like everything tiny there is a gray area we all have to watch for. Some people are even living illegally in their tiny and under the radar. For now, I choose to do what I can where I'm at. Then I will tweak it to how it's really supposed to be. Thank you for watching! :)
You mean the same landfill where kitty litter diapers both adult and baby diapers go. You talking about the landfills where dog poop goes after the owner picks it up and throws it in the trash the same one where nursing and hospital waste goes. I was a trash man for years believe when I say human poop in a landfill should be the least of your worries.
@@MrMwd1963 it's not about being worried, it's about making a change and starting by example. I don't want either the dog poo or the dirty diapers in the dump either. Make a statement and talk to your local jurisdiction about those issues to make a change. People should not be using disposable diapers - nothing wrong with cloth and washing them in the laundry.
Now I understand what you meant by your compost toilet and toilet training your cat. The toilet needs to always remain open for your cat as they cannot tell you ''Mommy, I need to pee or poop''. When the cat pees, I can see them peeing in the right area however, the pooping may go in the same place as well which is a not the proper thing. Hmmm, so this is where I was saying if you contact the company, maybe who knows they can think of something for compost toilets. ❤️ 😽 Great video.... ❤️😽
Thank you so much! Yes, the back opens with the pressure of the seat being pushed down. That would be a great thing if the company created a way for cats to use it too! 😊🐾❤
Thank you so much for sharing! This is such helpful info, I'm definitely sold! Seems much easier than the Nature's Head. Hope you have a great week chicky! Best of wishes. ♥♥♥
Thank you! The urine pipe is stubbed out the bottom of the house. You can divert it into sewer ir septic, a separate holding tank and then dump or create a ground filtration system using things like rocks and sand in a hole to filter it before it goes into the ground. Similar to a septic system and leech field.
There's only a smell when liquid gets in the back container and sits there. The fan doesnt allow it to dry out fast enough and bacteria and mold will start to form and attract bugs. So to keep the smell away I suggest a funnel for women and men to sit down and aim forward! If it''s just waste and no liquid in the back there is no smell at all! When you change it you do smell it.
Great question!! I would say it takes a good hour or two, honestly.. The smell lingers. Its not good. Even touching the bag on the outside, you have to wash your hands several times after. #compostingtoilet101 Lol. Did not expect or plan for those things!
I don't find there is an issue with that. I take my bag outside right away and don't leave it sitting in the house. And because the fan to the toilet is always on it draws out any lingering odours right away.
@@mytinybeachhouse2447 I'm finding that the smell is backing up due to a net and rubberband that is blocking some air flow. I had tried putting netting at the top of the pipe but when the guy was working on it it fell in the tube. Once I unblock that I will see what happens. Thanks!
Regarding the funnel - I've helped numerous people solve this issue. You won't need a funnel if you sit more upright on the toilet. What happens is when women lean forward on a toilet, the pelvis tilts back, and pee goes back into to solids area. If you sit upright, pee will normally go slightly forward, and all will be good. Guys need to either sit, or aim for the forward section of the bowl. I stand up and pee in mine.
Oh wow! You stand up?! 😯 how do you not get urine to splash in the back?...do you squat while standing to be closer to the toilet? Do you have the separett? And lastly...I have tried all kinds of things and it never fails..my urine still goes in the back. I will try your suggestion now.. Thank you!
It doesnt smell throughout the day...the fan takes care of that...but when you sit down and the back door opens, you can slightly smell fresher waste and yes you can absolutely smell it when changing it. I suggest wearing gloves because the smell lingers on your hands afterwards. Even after you wash them. So gloves help. The smell is also sensitive to gnats..if you have any liquidy waste or accidentally get urine back there it forms more odor and will attract bugs and mold. But if you do certain things to prevent that from happening it's much more manageable.
Since I put my house up on airbnb. I actually took the compost toilet out and but in a regular flush toilet for the guests. But once I move back in. I would like to put the compost toilet back in.
Thank you always for your support Kelli! :) Yea, I didnt want to have to clean that plastic tank out. Thank goodness sewer comes with my rent so why not use it!
@@TinyDreamer oh you're so welcome!! And yes I think this is the way to go. I'm not grossed out by things but I'm also clumsy and just seems like less ways for me to have an accident haha! Use that sewer, girl! :)
That's awesome! These toilets run about $1100. I imagine there are cheaper ones but this toilet is pretty nice. I recently switched the compost toilet out for a regular flush toilet so I can rent it out on airbnb. When I move back in I may or may not switch it back but I still have it.
Thanks for the video this is first one I've seen I'm going to make my own making a frame 3 or 4 buckets for height with a lid for buckets and a seat a cover for frame use 2 bags with everything if necessary going in then when needed remove bag and dispose of bag but thank you for the video I haven't seen one until yours great job that you.
It differs on where you go. Some will throw it away in the dumpster. Although not really allowed to...elderly, children and animal waste all go in the dumpster so human waste shouldn't be any different..but it is fir some reason. The correct way to dispose of the waste would be to use composting bags for a 3 week period and then place the bag of waste into a personal outdoor dirt pile or compost bin. This toilet starts the composting process but you dont mix any pete moss or filler in it like the Natures Head Composting Toilet.
Thank you! On average I would say a months worth is a good 5-15? lbs but honestly I've never weighed it. It's less heavy if you take it out more frequently.
@@TinyDreamer Separett should be cutting you commission checks. Purchased a Separett as your excellent video is very educational. You remove the stigma in dealing with a topic most people do not want to talk about.
@@2002drumsonly Omg, Thank you. That is such a compliment. I'm so glad viewers are more receptive to this video than not. Idk if you saw my other video where I talk about waste habits but that ones an informative one, too. Thank you for trusting my experiences and knowledge with this toilet! 🙏
I'm looking for toilets right now and man I have to say you were on some next level thinking this toilet is probably going to be the one for me because that was super simple and having the bags in there was next level thinking.
Thanks! That's Awesome! I'm glad you're considering this toilet because it is pretty easy to work with. Just a few bodily function mishaps to be aware of and how to work through them and you're good to go! 😎
Hello! Thanks for watching! The urine is stubbed out of the bottom of the house through a small blue tube...which can they be connected to pipes, hoses, etc in a sewer or septic system, a holding tank, a french latrine set up, or wherever you're diverting the urine. The separett website has a few of these options listed in how its diverted. Very helpful! (And I apologize for not mentioning it ..I totally forgot!)
Thank you! I do have an update..I just bought land and my plan was to compost the waste on my land in a compost bin. So I purchased one of those and when I start using the separett again (I'm on the land in the mobile home right now, tiny house is on land too on a foundation, I just haven't moved back in yet) I'll use the composter. 😊
In each place I've stayed it's been somewhat different. In the campground I stayed in the urine was stubbed into a pipe going into the sewer. The second 2 places I stayed at was temporarily on the ground. When I get my land, depending on the set up, I'll be going into septic/sewer and I'll have a compost bin for waste finally.
Great video. I'm currently building a tiny cabin. Planning on a Separett. I've been trying to decide how small I can make the toilet room. Yours looks like the perfect size for me. What size is it?
I've read someone saying that in order to not have smells, they need to change the bag every 3-4 times they go to the toilet. In this case one can just as well use a DIY bucket and all kind of toilet, 3-4 times it's way too often. It seems that there's no good toilet solution for tiny mobile houses...
Some work for some people but not others. I dont think I could do a Batures head or even a DIY. I feel since it woukdnt have a fan, it woukdnt dry out. But idk much about the DIY style compost toilet. I have been changing mine out maybe 2 times a month. I cant wait for the land to compost correctly. Then maybe I can bring it out sooner so it diesnt cause problems inside the house with bugs, smells, mold.
@@TinyDreamer Could it be that Separett added a fan in more recent versions, and older ones didn't have it? Anyway, 2 times a month doesn't sound bad, I'd say, I could live with that.
The plastic bags were a temporary fix. Now that i have my own land, i can correctly compost the waste. I recently took out my compost toilet to turn my tiny house into an Airbnb. When im ready to move back in, I'll switch it back and use the compost tumbler i bought to compost the waste.
I live in a campground where we have worked out something. The night before the garbage arrives is when I'm to put it out so it goes right out the next day. Easy peasy! :)
" out of sight, out of mind. " ...not so easy down the road though, at whatever landfill it ends up in. depositing your poop into a plastic bag and hauling it off the landfill, seems like just about the most irresponsible way to deal with one's own waste. 😕 Definitely worse than using a regular flush toilet, where there is a sewer system that's actually designed to deal with such things.
@@aureas i thought the same, it doesn't seem right to trap ur waste in a bag that probably might never break down for the waste inside to decompose. And dumping it into a dumpster never sounded right, it could rip and then there's poo everywhere..feel sorry for dumpster divers. If you can go and dig ur waste somewhere in dirt would be more ideal i think.
These toilets arent for everyone and we do what we can until we can do it correctly. At least thats how I see it. It honestly isnt any different from babies waste in plastic diapers, animals waste in plastic bags and elderly waste in depends diapers going into the main trash.
Sorry, this may be a dumb question. If it's waterless, what is the tub for on the back top of the toilet going through the wall? Also what happens if you get some urine in the poop side? Great video by the way!!!
Thank you! The tube at the back of the toilet is a vent to vent out odors. It constantly runs so the smell drifts outside. You can pipe it out at 4ft or 10 ft up in the air. When I first had it built it was vented out at 4ft right into my outdoor seating area so I had a handyman vent it up 10ft. I also installed a stronger fan because the original one didnt seem strong enough to pull the odors up 10ft and I was getting gnats. The vent always being on also helps to dry out the waste quicker.
@@TinyDreameroh I'm defiantly sticking with my Apartment! Way too much for me! I scoop the litter boxes 3x a day & what a mess when they have loose stool which humans go through also & I certainly couldn't get on my knees if I had to vomit and try and figure out what side to use😮 so unless I win the lottery and can purchase land where there's existing septic or sewer lines owning tiny is more expensive then a small home
Great video and explanation for this toilet and looks like a good option for our House in Greece where there is no mains drainage, but it already has an outside composting toilet. Many Thanks.
So, in the process of purchasing a RV, but weighing everything for the last 7 months and to make it affordable within our budget an RV WITHOUT a toilet is a option we are considering...Thank you for this info.
How old is your toilet? It looks a little bit different than mine which is only just over two years old. What about the filter that is right up against the wall in that little elbow that you pointed to at the beginning of your video? I found out the hard way that there are two filters on my separette. I cleaned the one in the toilet all the time, but didn't realize there was another one where the exhaust comes out of the toilet and goes through the wall. My toilet started smelling but it was because that filter was clogged and needed to be cleaned. Once I cleaned it all was great!
My toilet is not the newest model but the one before that. It's about 1 or 2 years old. Thanks so much for letting me know about the filters! I'm going to go check now!
There wasnt two filters but when I took off the back filter, a couple dead flies came out :O I vented the toilet up 10 ft and the mesh I had at the top fell off and fell into the pipe. That too could be blocking the airway for the scent. :(
Is there a company picks it up or what the Protocol I’ve never seen this I’m just trying to be knowledgeable of it who picks them up a company? A recycle company ? Just in more info
There is no company to pick it up. In the places I have lived, I just put mine in the dumpster with the rest of the trash. It is illegal but because animals, elderly and children throw their waste away in the same tradh, I made an exception. When I get my land, I'm planning on having a compost bin where I would put the waste in, mix with dirt and tumble it for weeks further creating compost material. That can then be used on gardens.
What kind of toilet do you use in your tiny and how does it compare to the Separett? Do you have new video ideas for me? Drop them below!
I've used both the Nature's Head and the Separett 9215. I prefer the Separett because I don't have to buy peat, noir, or sawdust and those things take up space and also emptying the Nature's Head is a pain in the butt.
@@fgc-linux1650 Agreed! I can imagine. I have heard horror stories.

But the reason a install one is because i couldn't do all that ..my wife is not
Going to deal with it we get other people in ourvan that come visit
I don't see my self moving other's people shit lol..so we install a full bath in our 170 extended with flushing toilet..we have huge water tank..because we take showers every day..we only use our van on weekends or short vacations. But because we want to feel like home our van is fully loaded..i want my wife to have every comfort that she has home
To have it in the van..and we do feel like home but smaller. 😆
We have stove oven. Microwave
Full bath refrigerator wacher dryer combo..nice little thing..for emergencies home stereo system
And I do not drink alcohol but
For visitors I have a beautiful bar
But we pay a price for all that.

Well?

Just put in a septic container underground. Costs $400 and then you can have it pumped every so often. Makes life easier.
Thanks for sharing your own experience with us. It really helps to understand that living in a tiny house is not difficult as I thought

@Brittanyjacks Haha! That's excellent...living the nomad life for a while. Living tiny is the best! 🏡😊

Great video! I wish I had one of these when I had my cabin. I had an outhouse. It was decorated beautifully, but it was still an outhouse.

My pleasure! Glad you found it helpful. Your idea sounds like it would work!!

Awesome! I'm so glad you think so!! You thinking about a Separett? 😊
This is cool. Loved the "roll up the sleeves part" Thanks for sharing :)
Awww, thanks! And thanks so much for your support and watching! :D
I've always wondered house those work. Where does the urine go after it goes down the front hole?
The urine pipe is stubbed out the bottom of the house and can ve disposed several different ways. In this spot I had it connected to the campgrounds sewer. Another spot, it ran onto the ground through pvc pipe. You can also create a french latrine set up where you put a filtration system of rocks and things below the urine pipe so when it drains into the rocks, it's being filtered. You can also connect it to a waste container and dump it somewhere. In my current spot on my new land, I have it connected to septic tank pipes.
Thank you, short, sweet and to the point.
Glad you enjoyed!
Just curious how do you wash in a composting toilet? Or you just have to use tissue paper😮😮😮
Yes, just toilet paper for these toilets...or some people use washable toilet paper.
Thank you for the informing video. I was wondering if this was for me, but I see more cons than pros. Much appreciated - you've helped immensely.
I've always been scared of the "Separett" toilet. Very informative.

Tiny Dreamer
Im scared it doesn't work for a woman......especially for one who cannot control their business sometimes it's both at once?
Question so you change this once a month? What about the smell?
@fiorellacr-f346 the smell isn't really noticeable when the toilet lid is closed.... Not only because it's closed, but because there's a fan inside the toilet area that vent out the odors, as well as helping to start the drying process.
This is super informative thanks 👏 But can I ask where the liquid goes?
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed! The liquid tube is stubbed out of the bottom of the house and diverted into the sewer with a connected garden type hose. You can also have the liquid run out into a hole full of rocks to filter it or buy a grey water tank and divert it into there.
@@TinyDreamer oh nice
@@TinyDreamer That's really smart.
@@patriciacole7976 Thanks! It was actually an idea from the actual separett compost toilet website. Lol :D
Does the composting toilet allow the smell to permeate your home?
It only does when you are changing it out. I cant smell it otherwise.
Very good Video.
I like this Compost toilet better than the other ones I saw.
Thank you so much! Me too, I Love the Separett Composting toilet!! 😍
I have one question I feel is pertinent in considering buying this product. How often would you remove the waste and does it not smell?
The compostable bags that should be used need to be changed every 3 weeks. If you use a regular garbage bag, it could go longer. Yes, it does smell when you change it. But that's the only time you really smell it unless liquids have gotten back there and bacteria starts forming.
So does the fan keep it from smelling?
Yes, for the most part. It helps until you go to change it...which then you have to open it and ultimately are able to smell the contents. When the lid is closed, the fan draws out the scent.

@@TinyDreamer Merry meet! Blessed be! ⭐️💖⭐️💖⭐️
I didn't see that you put in the wood chips. I assume that this is part of the process right?
No, not on this toilet. This one doesn't need any kind of mixing or filler like wood chips or pete moss or coco coir. They send along compostable bags and the fan starts the drying process. Then you'd essentially want to continue the composting process by putting it in dirt outside in a designated bin and tumbling it.
@@TinyDreamer so this has absolutely no smell as long as the fan is on all the time? Does the fam draw a lot of power? Thanks for the info 🙂
I made a video to address these issues! I hope you saw it..if not, here it is! Hope it helps! :) th-cam.com/video/aA47SQ9UJQk/w-d-xo.html

Using all that plastic is arguably much worse than wasting the water that you are concerned about.

Oh nice! I recently put my tiny house on Airbnb so i switched out the compost toilet for a regular flush for the guests. When i move back in, I'll switch it back.
Great video! How do you dispose of the urine though?
The urine is stubbed it the bottom of the tiny house and can be dealt with in 3 ways...you can attach it to a holding tank for gray water, you can attach it to a sewer or septic system or you can create somewhat of a french latrine and drain it through rocks and such.
I just purchased the Separate to install in my RV. However, I have not found an installation video specific to RV's. If you have seen one, I sure would appreciate a link or at least a push in the right direction, thanks!

Sure thing! :) Thank you for the appreciation!
Looks so much easier than the Natures head. Thank you for the great video
My pleasure!! It looked easier to me than that Natures Head so it was a winner in my book. Still is!!
You'll have to let us know how it works out!
thank you for this realistic how to i was so confused before this lol
You're welcome! Glad it helped!! 🙏🥰
Thank you for saying these things, Laura. Yes. Not in the landfill. Terrible idea. 😞
Thank you for sharing this vedio as it will help those decide to live in RV.
You're welcome! I'm glad it will help!
Great video....

It is my pleasure! Thanks so much for watching and finding it helpful! Thats my goal! :D I hope you have a great week as well!
Great video. What about dumping the urine collector? How is that done.
Thank you! The urine pipe is stubbed out the bottom of the house. You can divert it into sewer ir septic, a separate holding tank and then dump or create a ground filtration system using things like rocks and sand in a hole to filter it before it goes into the ground. Similar to a septic system and leech field.
V nice solution for ppl in areas with stricter regulations on compost toilets
Thank you! 🙏❤
Did you felt any smell?
There's only a smell when liquid gets in the back container and sits there. The fan doesnt allow it to dry out fast enough and bacteria and mold will start to form and attract bugs. So to keep the smell away I suggest a funnel for women and men to sit down and aim forward! If it''s just waste and no liquid in the back there is no smell at all! When you change it you do smell it.
Honest question. How long does it take to rid the house of any smells, once you open the toilet to empty? Thanks.
Thank you!
Question? Has anyone used this with children? My toddler definitely can’t aim nor tell me what she has to do #1 or #2
What about smell? Throughout the day and when actively changing bags?
It doesnt smell throughout the day...the fan takes care of that...but when you sit down and the back door opens, you can slightly smell fresher waste and yes you can absolutely smell it when changing it. I suggest wearing gloves because the smell lingers on your hands afterwards. Even after you wash them. So gloves help. The smell is also sensitive to gnats..if you have any liquidy waste or accidentally get urine back there it forms more odor and will attract bugs and mold. But if you do certain things to prevent that from happening it's much more manageable.
Thank you, we are hoping to put in a composting toilet soon

Hello!! This toilet only starts the compost process. If you were to compost it further, i think its about 8 months to a year.
Thank you for being gross for the sake of our research. You're a hero!
Haha! No problem! Thanks for the compliment 😊
Question: does the waste bag goes with the regular garbage or it is treated as biohazard material? What's the right way to discard the waste?
It differs on where you go. Some will throw it away in the dumpster. Although not really allowed to...elderly, children and animal waste all go in the dumpster so human waste shouldn't be any different..but it is fir some reason. The correct way to dispose of the waste would be to use composting bags for a 3 week period and then place the bag of waste into a personal outdoor dirt pile or compost bin. This toilet starts the composting process but you dont mix any pete moss or filler in it like the Natures Head Composting Toilet.
Excellent video! How heavy is the bag that is disposed of? Thank you.
Thank you! On average I would say a months worth is a good 5-15? lbs but honestly I've never weighed it. It's less heavy if you take it out more frequently.

Thank you for your video.very helpful
You're welcome!
Question number 2 sorry, I have quiet a bit of diarrhea, would i have to.... aim for the small hole?
That doesnt even make sense. You go diarrhea in the back, where the rest of the waste goes.
@@TinyDreamer ok thanks
@@chrisbbbbchris1 You're welcome!
Noooo this is not composting and the use of plastic bags is terrible for the environment.
Thank you for sharing. What wasn't clear is where the urine goes?
@@TinyDreamer thanks for clarifying.
@@WonderingAboutThat No problem!!
After it is bagged how/where do you dispose of it?
For right now I dispose of it in the regular trash. When I get my land I'll be doing it the correct way. :)
Nice video. Been researching these for an off grid cabin.
Thank you! Oh that's great! I think you'd love it 😊🏡
Great video x keep up the good work cheers from Australia ‘ you made it look simple and yep I’m going compost thank you
Awesome! And Thank you for watching!! 😊
OMGoodness,SO SIMPLE,LOVE IT!
YES!! It really is so simple! :D I Love it, too!!!
Nice video :) Wondering if you have any updates on your setup! We just posted an unboxing of the OGO Composting Toilet.. pretty impressed!
Thanks for sharing this informative video.
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful! 😊
So this is a lot longer after the upload of this video, but how is the liquid waste disposed of?
Do it in a bucket
In each place I've stayed it's been somewhat different. In the campground I stayed in the urine was stubbed into a pipe going into the sewer. The second 2 places I stayed at was temporarily on the ground. When I get my land, depending on the set up, I'll be going into septic/sewer and I'll have a compost bin for waste finally.
Very, very interesting...
Yes it is! I just switched out this compost toilet for a regular flush toilet to rent out on airbnb.
Great video. I'm currently building a tiny cabin. Planning on a Separett. I've been trying to decide how small I can make the toilet room. Yours looks like the perfect size for me. What size is it?
Thank you! :) I believe mine is 5' x 8'
@@TinyDreamer
Could it be that Separett added a fan in more recent versions, and older ones didn't have it? Anyway, 2 times a month doesn't sound bad, I'd say, I could live with that.
I'm confused though. How is plastic bags of waste in the landfill better than a regular toilet?
The plastic bags were a temporary fix. Now that i have my own land, i can correctly compost the waste. I recently took out my compost toilet to turn my tiny house into an Airbnb. When im ready to move back in, I'll switch it back and use the compost tumbler i bought to compost the waste.
What do you do with the bag with contents inside when it's full? How do you dispose of it?
I live in a campground where we have worked out something. The night before the garbage arrives is when I'm to put it out so it goes right out the next day. Easy peasy! :)
" out of sight, out of mind. "
...not so easy down the road though, at whatever landfill it ends up in.
depositing your poop into a plastic bag and hauling it off the landfill, seems like just about the most irresponsible way to deal with one's own waste.
I think if I cant compost and going to throw it away why not have a burning one so their is less volume to trow away.
@@TinyDreamer Thanks for the video, I to want to replace my fan, can you tell me what model and where you go to order the stronger fan :)
@@armourofgod6310 Absolutely! It's this one :) amzn.to/3l8MpGO
This is really quite ingenious.
I thought so too!! No lifting of a big bucket or toilet and no cleaning it out each time!
Thank you so much tot showing this!
Absolutely! Glad it helped! :)
Thank you!
Absolutely!! :)
Thank you for sharing ...I had a little problem understanding you with the music beat in the background
Thanks for your feedback!
Great video and explanation for this toilet and looks like a good option for our House in Greece where there is no mains drainage, but it already has an outside composting toilet.
Many Thanks.
Thank you so much for that! :) It is an amazing option for anyone not wanting to waste water! Or like in your case there is no main drainage!
Thank you for the information it so helpful, so good of you to share information that may be uncomfortable to say, I do appreciate it
You're welcome! And honestly, thank you for appreciating it! 😊🙏
So, in the process of purchasing a RV, but weighing everything for the last 7 months and to make it affordable within our budget an RV WITHOUT a toilet is a option we are considering...Thank you for this info.
No problem! There's also the airhead composting toilet that I hear is great for travel!
Great video!
Thank you so much!!
Is there a company picks it up or what the
Protocol I’ve never seen this I’m just trying to be knowledgeable of it who picks them up a company? A recycle company ? Just in more info
There is no company to pick it up. In the places I have lived, I just put mine in the dumpster with the rest of the trash. It is illegal but because animals, elderly and children throw their waste away in the same tradh, I made an exception. When I get my land, I'm planning on having a compost bin where I would put the waste in, mix with dirt and tumble it for weeks further creating compost material. That can then be used on gardens.
Thank you. 👍
