UPDATE - Got the car back, McLaren, were as always, amazing to deal with, and went above and beyond. The problem has apparently gone away for now. So my conclusion remains, if you want a pleasant 7, get an R8, if you want more car, and are okay with some 'difficulties' a 720s will be that '10' but expect her personality to be a bit difficult at times. TBH, I love both, for different reasons.

I had similar problems with a new Porsche I bought, and when dealership revealed they had to extract the engine and also replace the transmission, I demanded a replacement new car; since the operation would show in the Carfax (and I would struggle to sell it later on). So, Porsche did replace it. Don't know Rich, something you could try? Also a subtle threat to take them to the BBB, also would add pressure for them to give you a new car. It is an expensive investment, they have to respect that. Peace.

It probably was something to do with the fuel system like the fuel pressure module... shit's weird as hell though idk why it would fucking happen...
And that 1995 Dodge Caravan is now demanding that you stop car shaming it and expects the same attention and service as the McLaren or at least the R8.
Mate, you know that's not good enough as that problem will keep coming back; you might need to push for further actions next time you come to dealer with the issue (and that will be sooner then later)

@@avatar19822 But it's the truth. Whether we're talking computers, phones, or automobiles the one thing the tech industry lags well behind in is reliability, and the industry hides behind the fact that most replace their gadgets after a couple years anyway.
People generally keep vehicles for years if not decades so the unprofessionalism of people in tech really stands out. Do you know anyone with a feature-rich vehicle where all of the features actually work? More often than not there are several things, like a retractable sunroof, that doesn't work and the owner of the vehicle just accepts it.

Yep, the new Turbo S out drags just about anything, 0-60 in 2.2 seconds, while sounding like a Dyson Vacuum in heat. Like any of these supercars though, sell it before the warranty runs out. Buddy of mine had a BMW M5 with the full competition package, damn thing was always in the shop, it finally self- combusted while he was having a hair cut...total right off a month before his warranty ran out.

That’s the problem with all the computers in the new vehicles, more things that can fuck up. Hope you can get it fixed Rich. I can imagine how aggravating it is to spend a ton of money on a bad ass car and then have issues arise.
A Corvette has a bunch of computers in it too. Brits can't engineer cars to save their lives. Beautiful cars, big pieces of shit.

All cars built just for performance are built just for performance, not reliability. It’s assumed you want performance first and can afford the maintenance of a true performance car. So reliability is never put ahead of performance in any design decisions.

At the end of the spectrum you have formula 1, as someone i don’t recall but notorious in this field said : if it does not break at the end of the race, something is wrong.
Tell that to the GT3/4, the R8’s and Huracans… those cars are basically bulletproof reliable.
Can’t really get behind this. On one hand... yes. You can’t expect 200 thousand trouble free miles as if this thing is a Honda Accord. High horsepower and hard use are of course going to accelerate any wear and tear
But at the same .... not cool if there is constantly something acting up at random.
A bunch of cylinders running lean is not a “mechanical issue” that arises from repeated hard use. These are obnoxious computer glitches and electrical gremlins that shouldn’t be occurring right out of the gate
There are countless other high powered automobiles out there that don’t have so many consistent and random issues

Nah that's just a dumb excuse to help people sleep at night. It's 2021 man if they wanted to make this car run to 80k with no problems they could. That's why so many people love porches.
That's no true though. Modern Ferraris, while they do require maintenance and it's damn expensive, will not randomly have check engine lights go on as long as you keep to proper scheduled maintenance. Same for Porsche, even a Lambo, or some AMG / BMW M models, etc...

I drove German cars for 10 years and no more , got a mustang now and never had a issue .
Germans can engineer. German cars are socially engineered. Done so because people that buy them know "they are expensive to maintain".
For instance, BMW integrates the PCV into the valve cover on a BUNCH of their vehicles. So now, a PCV that's $20 on a Ford or Honda is integrated into a $500 valve cover that's $1500 in total to replace.
I did a ton of work on VWs and Audis. Those actually weren't so bad. Other than underspec'd plastics in the engine bays.
Yeah I've left German cars alone after having several audis and bmws. I might grab a Porsche though.

After only 3 months of ownership I'm hoping warranty will cover parts and labour.
I tend to be suspicious of the amazing, above and beyond customer service from high end brands in particular, it's probably because they get a TON of complaints and have to bend backwards to satisfy their disgruntled clientele.
Buy a Ferrari Rich. I’m on my 4th Ferrari & zero problems

Good luck with the Mclaren, mine had an issue every other month. Its a great car for going fast. I moved on to the 2020 NSX and never had a issue :D.
Rich, really enjoyed the style of this video. If you could start posting more about the entrepreneurship and cars side of things I would personally throurougly enjoy this type of content. It may not draw the same amount of viewership or crowd as red pill content, but this is more down to earth.
You bought a McLaren and didn't buy a mechanic? You're going to be spending a lot of time taking it to the dealer for repairs.

I hope your luck with the 720 gets better. Incredible car. I bought a mp4-12c spyder with the understanding it may be maintanence intense. So far knock on wood it’s been pretty solid and a blast to drive. Just came back from a 125 mile drive in the mountains and twisties and it was so much fun. I own a Ferrari f430 and since I got the McLaren it hardly gets driven. 2000 miles in two months of ownership and so far it’s been pretty reliable.
Intermittent prblm sounds like a sticky switch or sensor r solenoid.
I used to repair electronics in high school.

That’s what Mclearns are famous for unfortunately. Went with the AMG GTR for the reliability and service coverage. Hate having to drive 40-50kms to drop a car off for service.

Similar to my Manual BMW M6 with the S85 v10 engine in that regard; extremely fun to drive, but also finicky and would empty my pockets at the dealership if I didn't do my own wrenching on her.

At a fraction of the price of one of these i believe that you would be far better off with a GTR-35. Japanese reliability and HUGE tuning potential, crazy power/acceleration
Did you buy it new or used? I got mine new under warranty for the reason that issues may occur.
McLaren is my dream car.. I’m hoping yours is just like this and this isn’t standard with these cars. Would love to see more McLaren content
Mclarens are notoriously like this. On top of terrible quality inside paneling/connectors.
I will use that cold start sound as my notification sound. That was so good.

Stuck/weak transmission solenoid. After it got hot then it loosened. They add stop leak and all these additives that create sticky especially hot humid areas. Just my 2.
the check engine light is on because there is a problem with the car. Sounds like it’s in limp mode esp if the engine power is minimal and the trans isn’t shifting as it should. Let us know how it goes, it’s likely just some sensor. I’m surprised at how many problems you’ve had already. Once they iron it out you’ll be good to go! Good thing it’s under warranty…
Juts get a Porsche GT3 and all your problems are gone man. Once a year maintenance most of the times. And very very fast and powerful car for sure.

This isn't the first time I've heard these complaints about McLaren 720s. I know a guy who has one that shows up to Hunt Valley horsepower in Maryland. He's reported similar issues with his in highway and track mode. That gentleman said I think it most likely has something to do with the sensors in the engine and elsewhere getting false or inaccurate readings somehow. Just a guess by him though but yes car gremlins aren't fun. Best of luck Rich.
chances are the recheck routine on startup at the dealer cleared ther issue they probably reset the warning to get a clean instance of what could be happening.
Have the mechanic take it home until he fixes it. For god's sake!
@@hoppy2515 that type of thing isn't not covered by insurance when you own a supercar, at least not in Canada. so if something did happen offsite, youre basically shit-out-of -luck, id suggest against that idea.
In my experience, they are not very good cars. Everyone I've dealt with has had door lock issues, power window issues etc but they sure look cool and are fun to drive
For the price tag it's a shame these issues woudl exist. Sure performance be the main focus but door lock issues?

McClaren’s are known to be temperamental, to be honest it’s not a practical regular drivable car - it’s more a show piece for the very occasional drive in the sunny weather.
Owning one you’ll find that you will become best friends with the servicing people as you will see a lot of them - I can guarantee that!

Those paddles man... I had something similar on my last car and it was fun for a week or two, then I was just wishing for a stick shift. Even in "manual mode" The software shifted as soon as the RPMs got over like 3,000. What a piss off.
Gt3 RS man. Or if your like me and you just need something to daily drive but want the insane speed, get a hellcat. Comfy as a couch and will do supercar levels of straight line performance.

I remember when you were considering a Porsche 911 Turbo S, but, IIRC, you never drove one and instead drove a “race” Porsche and didn’t like the ride (which wasn’t a fair comparison of ride quality, honestly). Ditch the 720 before it’s warranty expires and get a Porsche 911 Turbo S and thank me later. I looked at 720’s, but after hearing about their poor quality and reliability, it was a hard pass.
Every person I know who takes their McLaren to the track has two, because one will invariably stop working

I know nothing about McLaren engines but my guess is either a sensor or fuel injection or timing issue

Don't get the flossing with the cars. Homes, renovations, and furnishings are way more expensive than cars. This guy can can probably afford it, but high-end real estate is a much better indicator of wealth than a car.
Some people just like to drive fast cars dummy. You only live once. If fast cars make you happy, go for it. If buying high end real estate makes you happy, go for it.
I personally, love your Dinah best. I got a hard-on for German made cars…preferably the BMW line.

From an Audi, a Lambo would’ve been the natural progression and they’re just as reliable. Way less problems than Macca’s… But I know you like your British engineering.
There are lots of vids and blogs out there about the build quality of the McLaren and how it is shockingly disappointing. Seriously hope your vehicle is not the norm.

Must suck to have a $300,000 sports car where most of your miles are put on going back and forth to the shop! I’m sure their customer service is great…. They have a lot of practice!
I have had European cars, and the issues with them have always been the cheap plastic they use in the engine. It begins to rot in about three years into ownership, sometimes sooner.
That is when the car begins to display lean conditions pushing it into limp mode. The reason it won't accelerate appropriately in any way selected.
The lean conditions cause overheating in the combustion chamber, blowing out coils and spark plugs.
The dealer will usually pressurize the intake before and after the turbo with a smog machine to visually detect the air leak.
It's a headache; expect to be often at the dealer for vacuum leaks.
I am not saying this the symptom in your car.
It's just so rampant among European vehicles.
That a smog machine should come with the purchase of every European car.
I would be very curious and not surprised if the replacement PART was NOT A PLASTIC PART.
In wonder if oil temperature governs acceleration? Just spitballing. I'm not a mechanic.

Now you got the engine lean codes? Lean codes are very difficult to diagnose. There many subsystems that can trigger them. Rich - regardless if you got warranty - get rid of this car! It'll be in the shop more then you drive it.
Have you looked at the Tesla S Plaid? 0-60 in 1.9 secs.

Sucks to see man. With Lamborghinis and Ferraris running dead reliably these days, McLaren really needs to step up their game.
Could be a self governing thing, until the car has a certain number of "break in" miles on it, a friend's BMW M5 competition did that, it wouldn't work in launch mode until it had 1500 miles on the clock.
