  • This week, we solo sail our 1983 Cape Dory 28 to Goat Harbor and anchor bow and stern for the first time. As a beginning sailor, this was a challenge but successful. Jack the Salty Dog and I then row ashore and explore the anchorage describing the plants and birds we see on our hike. On the passage over, two juvenile Sunfish (Mola Mola) wave to us before diving below.

Thank you for watching our exploration of Willow Cove on Santa Catalina Island, Stay tuned as we explore by sailboat more anchorages and discuss the natural history, ecology, and native plants that occur in these regions.
🦊 Caution! As a plant nerd, I admitted have more to learn about the conservation of other creatures. One example is the threat to the Island Fox on Catalina (Urocyon littoralis catalinae). Although this species has made a triumphant recovery thanks to the efforts of the Catalina Island Conservancy and Institute for Wildlife Studies, the fox faced near extinction on the island due to a lethal strain of canine distemper (virus). On occasion, I have let @jack.the.salty.dog off-leash while on island, which can lead to situations that endanger the island fox. I will correct this habit moving forward and encourage other boaters with dogs to do the same when visiting the island. Loved this video share. Thank you. In the early 70's I and my catamaran mates anchored in Goat Harbor but got pulled off our anchor in a storm and had to sail home in the night. So never got to explore the island so really appreciate your tutorial share on the native plant community.

Awesome. Body glove makes the best surfing wetsuit. I have a new Heritage 4/3 fit is great and zips and seams are done right.
I usually set the bow first, just because you have 300ft. Get it set at 7/1 in case a swell comes in later and you need to work off the beach. Then back in and drop the stern as close as you can.
    Loving the series.

Nice job. Always informative. I've not yet anchored at Goat. Too crowded on my last opportunity.

Nice trip. Almost like I was there with you. Very relaxed and genuine style and narration. Love the plants - exciting to see the ironwood.

awesome trip! Thanks for sharing - I think you'll agree the "slow boat" version of travel means you see a lot more along the way. Great catch on the sunfish! Thanks also for sharing your stern anchoring technique. It has vexxed me as well in puget sound the few times I have done it but thats usually because Im a lot closer to shore than Id like :).

Absolutely! I'm returned the stern anchor I bought and going to pick up a different one this weekend. I still trying to consider a better system while single-handed.

I am really enjoying your videos. I enjoy the easy going learning. When you talk about your garden do you have photos of it? I would love to see how you have incorporated all the plants you love. Jack is good boy :-)

Thank you, Lynn! If you have facebook (Kevin Alison) or Instagram (@kevosphere), I have a few photos there. I like your idea and will maybe do a garden tour video in the spring. Jack is a good boy. He's really taking to the boat life well.

Love it! May I make a format suggestion? This might just be the stoner naturalist in me speaking, Instead of a selfie lecture style, maybe just good video of the plants, with that dub step background music and voice over description with a lay person three point take-away for each plant. What makes it unique and cool! It might shift the focus from us listening to you, us really looking at and seeing the plant- Like I said, love everything that you are doing, and all I can think about is building fresh water catchments in key points in the arid landscape!
