  • In this video, I show you what a typical day at the office looks like. From the time I wake up, until I get home. Even though the world is crazy right now and I do work from home (at the moment) most of the time, I still have to go into the office every now and then for physical things like cutting checks to our vendors. Hope it gives you an idea of what it’s like to be an accountant and what working in a professional office looks like. I like the idea that you have your own private desk and office. I've often heard introverts are more likely to choose accounting. That's me. I don't want to share space with anyone else. I want my private office, or walled off cubicle. If these things are true, and happen for me, I'll trade my MBA off for an MSA, and am in fact making steps that direction right now. My only regret is that I chose the MBA route. I've been kicking myself for a decade now because of that decision, however, its never too late to go back and get the degree that one really wants.

      It was nothing fancy. Back then, there was no Linkedin or Indeed, those types of sites really. I literally was looking on Craigslist for entry level accounting jobs. Basically every AP clerk and AR clerk job that came up I applied to. After about a month of applying everywhere, a company that needed help gave me a chance and hired me. The rest is history as they say.
      With any job, especially your first job in a field, you just need to be the biggest sponge you can be and absorb everything you can. And with every job, you have to learn to adjust and adapt. Kinda just go with the flow, but at the same time, do you best to learn quickly and make minimal errors along the way.
      With today's technology, there are lots of resources if you're having trouble understanding topics. Talk to an advisor, maybe there's a study group you can join to bounce topics off other people. I think it really depends on how you learn. And figuring out the best method that works for you to understand whatever topic you're having trouble with.

    I'm so stuck! do you think I should go into Computer Science and Engineering (CSE/software engineer) or stay in my accounting major. I am an incoming college student in the fall and I cannot decide I like both and heres the significant differences that I can't decide between. Coding is "fun" but extremely difficult (such as the class I have to take in the fall if I switch is calc 2) and will take up all of my college time but pays significantly more. Accounting I know that I am more than capable of doing and I don't mind the boringness since I see it as chill not boring and like to work with numbers. My point is should I go accounting even though they do have long work weeks or try and push through CSE to get that high paying job and those less stressful work weeks?

    • @nukem384
      @nukem384  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is totally a decision you have to make. If you're aspiring to be an engineer, then you know you're smart. So use that to your advantage if you go the accounting route. Make sure you get your CPA if you do accounting and you'll be making some nice money. Probably not as much as an engineer, but plenty enough to be comfortable. Getting your CPA will open up tons of doors for you and it's basically like having a master's degree in accounting. That could one day lead to the CFO or CEO position, if you want to push that hard. Or just be an accounting manager or controller and still make a nice buck. Not all accounting jobs are long hours. You're thinking of auditing. Auditing sucksssss, but you get that experience and then get out. That'll also open a lot of doors too. That in combination with a CPA will basically let you do whatever you want in the accounting field.

      I do not have a CPA, although if I were to do school over again, I totally would've. Stupid young adult I was lol. You don't need it though to have a good paying job in this field. A CPA definitely does open up more doors though if you want high visibility, super high paying, high responsibility type jobs. Switch your emphasis under BA if you don't think you'll like accounting. Marketing, management, HR, CIS, finance if you like the stock market. I actually did mine in e-business. So I technically don't have an "accounting degree".
      I would highly highly recommend you continue with your bachelors though. Don't quit accounting to get an AA. Switch to something more interesting for you, or switch your major all together if you don't think you'll like the business world. Business degrees are pretty versatile though. You can get a lot of jobs with a business degree. And getting a bachelors will more often than not make you more money in the long run than an AA. Just my 2 cents. Hope that helped.

    With you experience and knowledge, do you suggest jumping into CPA certificate path right after college is better than building couple years of field experience? I am not. If I was smarter like you in college, I could've/should've gone that route. It really depends on the company, if you need a CPA or not. Some companies really want you to have one, and some don't care. A CPA will definitely help you if the job is very high visibility though. If you are aiming for that type of super high paying, CEO/CFO type job, then yes, get your CPA. A CPA will open more door for you, but you can definitely still make a career in Accounting without it. At least here in CA, I'm not aware of any 1 year of public accounting to sit for the CPA. There are different routes you can go to be able to sit for the CPA, and I know having enough college credits only is one of them. Doing public accounting will open up more doors for you as well. If you do that over starting at the bottom with your AP job and working your way up, you'll have more opportunities, faster. But the cost is that you'll be super stressed out because you'll be working 80 hour weeks for however long you're at the public company. So if that sacrifice is worth it to you, go for it.

      Literally because when I was growing up, people around me would say "no business can survive without an accountant." And they aren't lying. You can't run any business without accounting, and I liked numbers, so it was a fit.
      There are so many different kinds of accountants. It's a very big field. The one everyone thinks of first is tax accountants. "Can you do my taxes?". But many other types too, GL, property, fund, cash. "Accountant" is almost an umbrella term in a sense.
      Advice is make sure you understand debits and credits. Fundamental for accountants and you will get no where if you don't understand that and which type of accounts journal entries should go to, depending on the situation.

    Thank you for this video! I study accounting and financial management at the University of Waterloo. Despite it being so focused on accounting/finance, there are so many routes I can take I'm so lost. I have a job rn as a accountant clerk (I'm still in school) and I'm looking forward to the next few years of lack of sleep and coffee to become a CA/CPA! I'm wondering if a canadian CPA can still work in US or is there another test we need to take? Also overall, do you like your job (worklife balance, salary comparing to hours, etc.). Also is U of Waterloo known in bay area or is it unknown?

    • @nukem384
      @nukem384  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's good you already have your foot in the door, in a sense, with the accounting clerk job. I'm sure that'll help once you finish university and look for that first "real" job. Yes, the Canadian CPA will be just as good as the American CPA if you decide to come down to the states. Technically, it's a different license (which you know), but companies honor it the same. In fact, I actually had an old co-worker who was from Vancouver and had her CPA. She had just as much street cred as the other CPA's in our org. If you wanted to take the American CPA test, you could. I'm not sure how that all works though, like the requirements, but honestly, if you're already a Canadian CPA, you don't really need to get an American CPA unless you really wanted to.
      My particular job is really good. Good work/life balance, competitive salary, all that. This will depend highly on the company and your particular position. I know co-workers just in my org that I wouldn't want to be. Way too much work and always fighting to keep their head above water. You really won't know until you get into the company or you know somebody at the company that can give you a heads up. Just be sure to ask those questions at the interview, but most of the time, the interviewer is going to say all of that is good regardless.
      I have heard of that university, like U of Toronto, Brock, York, McMaster, but that's because I know a bunch of Canadian's. I think most people will just assume it's 4 year university in Canada. As an interviewer, it doesn't really matter which school, as long as it's a 4 year university. Once you get a few years actual accounting experience under your belt, you'll find nobody cares which university you went to. It's all about your working experience at that point.
      This got pretty long lol, whoops. Hope it helped!

      @nukem384  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@xoxomangakcorxoxo No problem! Feel free to ask any other questions. Yeah either friends, or if you can find reviews online of the company for your position, that might be a way to go about it too. In terms of education, in this field, it's more important to get a CPA over a masters, if you had to pick one. A CPA is pretty much a masters in this field anyway. I don't know your future plans on how far you want to go up the chain, but a CPA will easily get you to a management position if that's what you're looking for. Maybe if you're shooting real high, like VP or CFO, the masters in addition to the CPA might help, but start with the CPA and see where it takes you first. You probably won't need the masters.

If you wanted to work, say, in the stock market, a license like a CFA would probably be more appropriate, depending on the job.

      If you don't mind starting from the bottom with like an AP or AR clerk type job, you probably don't even need to go back to school. You already have a bachelor's. We'll call your AS a "minor" in business. You have actual business experience. I think if there's a company willing to give you a chance to learn, you could start from there. Just start learning accounting on your own with the internet or books. Make sure you understand debits and credits, the balance sheet, P&L. And maybe that company gives you a chance if they like you for a promotion to an entry level accountant position like a staff accountant. Then the skies the limit from there if you work hard. Are you tenacious? Are you dedicated? Are you willing to learn and absorb information? Stuff like that. I actually don't have an accounting degree either, but I did major in business, so maybe that slightly helps.
      If I were to recommend any one thing about accounting, it's DR/CR. Make sure you understand those and when doing entries, what goes to liabilities, what goes to expense, revenue, etc. Understand those accounts and what normal balance they should have. Very important for accounting.
      I think it really depends on what exactly kind of accounting job you have. Accounting is a huge field. If we're talking about being an auditor, yeah, that's going to be stressful as hell and you're going to be working 80 hour weeks regularly. But if we're talking about a staff accountant position or an accounting position in a big firm that is reconciling GL's, doing bank recon, contributing to a year end close, stuff like that, it's probably not going to be super stressful.
