- In September 2014, a white lion cub was spotted in Singita Kruger National Park. While hundreds of these animals exist in captivity, only 13 remain in the wild, making the sighting unique. Black Bean Productions set out to capture footage of these remarkable big cats, whose coloration is not albinism but is caused by a less severe mutation.

Lion cubs have a 70% mortality rate. It broke my heart to read at the end of the video that one of the cubs died of natural causes, but that is the reality of being a lion. The chances of one of those cubs growing to maturity and mating is very slim; that's why seeing one is so incredible. At one time, a white lion did grow and mate to perpetuate it's bloodline to this time, and it took TWO lions with the recessive gene to create the cubs we saw in this video. Incredible!

Sadly, their white coloration makes their future very bleak. It's a liability when hunting as they don't have the camouflage to blend in with their natural surroundings. When your prey can easily spot you, you lose your ability to creep close to them, which is a critical part of hunting for lions in the wild.
I hope the cub is female so she doesn't get kicked out of the pride as an adult

Hyenas, leopards, even another lion, disease, violence within the pride, all these things and more contribute to the 70% mortality rate that a lion cub faces.
My best guess is a predator got it. They're basicly glowing in the savannah. Easy targets.

The majority of Lion cubs die. I think between 70%-80% of Lions die before they reach their second year. A Wildebeest calf has a better chance of survival than a Lion cub. Its nature's way of controlling their numbers and maintaining a balance.

No. They're African Lions. There are no cases of white Asiatic Lions being documented. The Kruger National Park in South Africa is the only place where white Lions have been recorded. Also, its illegal to transport Asiatic Lions and release them in Africa because they wont know how to survive and they don't belong there.
