I have never seen a youtuber trying so hard to think of more content for a video instead of having it short in multiple videos for more views. TH-cam should really give you a medal for best contents of the year. Keep doing it!
Just discovered your channel, and it is literally life changing. My playing is already so much more sophisticated and tasteful than before. I love that you actually explain the theory behind it because it makes the concepts easier to grasp.
The way you teach is so lucid, this video is opening my mind so much to the possibilities of composition. Thank you Jeff, it's much appreciated, keep it up!
I love that you just corrected yourself instead of rerecording it.We're human. a rose by any other name... Most importantly, Its the correction that will probably guarantee that I don;t forget it. Anyway, thank you and great lesson.
@@thomascharbonneau1661 there are reasons to see it both ways but @Ramon Rodgers is viewing it from a positive light. His point is that the colorful and visual correction Jeff made may lead to a better understanding of the concept. This is for two reasons: Firstly, Ramon now knows there is a difference between the terms secondary dominant and subdominant, which are two similar-sounding phrases with distinctly different meanings. He hadn't discussed what a subdominant was yet, but the blatant correction warns viewers of their own possible mix-up. Secondly, the use of a red block of text to correct himself is helpful to us because, like when taking notes in a class, color coding important parts makes them easier to remember.
My wife and I (both music majors in college) were just talking about how we could use a refresher course in functional piano and chord progressions. She's a trombonist, and I'm a jazz drummer/band teacher. You do a great job reminding me of the definition and function of the secondary dominant chord. We need more videos like this! I actually just sent her the link! Thanks a lot for this video Jeff!
thank you very much for your generous spirit. this vid started to get interesting for me at about 9:00 - I really appreciate your format because your viewers can jump forward until they get to something they don't know. terrific job, very informative!
Thank you for covering the ground it is incredibly helpful to someone like myself i watched the whole vid twice. even though i got confused with the whole sub dom thing haha it was very helpful!!! Thanks!
as a music instructor it's really nice to watch your videos to see how you introduce some of these topics - gives me lots of ideas for how to teach my students!
I always played by ear. Reading music was too complicated to me. I'd just rather hear it, find it, and walk the keys myself. But this was sick. I'm interested in learning these chords now to enhance my skills. Excellent job man!
No one explains like u do brotha. This same theory and other theory that I've seen it in other videos of other pianists I don't understand what they say, but with u know I understand them so clear. U are so detailed to explain. You are an amazing teacher.
Hey Jeff I want to thank u. I am a dubstep producer but have always wanted some kind of jazzy or different flare but I new nothing about music theory and I’m glad I found ur channel because a am getting so much better and kinda want to make some r&b hip hop
I have to say that this video was the catalyst for a whole deep dive into music theory that I have been putting off for, idk, like over a decade? I think this is the 4th time I've watched it and now I can watch the whole thing and I understand everything you're talking about and have used all of your tips to write my own songs. I'm having more fun than I ever have writing music, but it took me probably a year to get there because I had to start from the basics, jumping all over the place to deconstruct everything you're talking about. Now it seems so simple, but I still have a lot t learn!! Thank you very much for your content!!!
I've been reading classical music theory for a while now.. Few weeks ago I accidentally found myself looking your videos. I just have to say thank you: Your teaching really helps me to get everything assembled and clear in my head. Such an inspiration! Thank you once again :)
This video is so straight forward. You turned five years of piano information I had to learn scattered throughout books and websites, into a 20 minute video that made it all so clear and sensible. Please please do a video on voicing and inverting chords 🙏
As someone who hates music theory but knows I need to or become boring, i appreciate your taking time to explain things basically. I followed fairly well for the first 3 or 4 minutes and as things went on slowly but surely faded into oblivion. But as you said, it's on TH-cam so I will come back and try to get through the next two or three minutes etc until i become a musical virtuoso in about 240 years. (Seriously - Thanks, it's a big help.)
This video was awesome! I've never been classically trained, so everything I know about playing piano was figured out through years of experimentation. I already knew a lot of what was in this video, but now it's being given a NAME, a DEFINITION, a STRUCTURE. It's really giving me the flexibility to take ideas I was already familiar with and apply them in new and interesting ways. If you're watching this, and you're only checking the comments because you're getting bored, PAY ATTENTION. Whether you're just starting out or you're an experienced player ironing out some details, this video is VALUABLE.
wonderful video! been studying music theory for the past months and this really helped to wrap it all up and give me directions to practice efectively. thank you very much
I am a guitarist, but your videos helped me a lot and opened lots of things for me, you explain every thing pretty simple, clear and easy to catch. keep on :)
As a guitar player who likes theory I had never tried to grasp such concepts using a piano view ... What a mistake, it really helps to understand the relation between each scale degree ! I am happy to subscribe !
I watched this video for the second time today and finally got what you were saying. As a songwriter this is a valuable aid. I am a songwriter. Thank you.
I enjoyed learning from this tutorial:" How to write chord progressions" I sincerely enjoyed and I understood the majority: however, I will go back and review. I sincerely enjoyed this tutorial and I look forward to additional tutorials. Thank You soooo much!!
really good video. "deceptive cadence" is the name and concept of something i've always loved but couldn't technically describe until now. thanks for putting this together!
Your videos are really great! I have been making instrumental hip hop and electronic music for 20 years but have always struggled with writing interesting and unique musical progressions. I have some background playing guitar as an early teenager (36 now) but always wish I had taken piano so I would have had to focus more on chord and keyboard theory. Thanks so much for sharing them!
Your videos are helping me understand my Theory assignments better. And I'm glad you were playing in a lower octave, because that's the octave I sing in, so I can hear it better. Thanks!!
I was taught this at school a couple years from now by who I consider to be the best teacher I've ever had in my life and though I kinda understood the principle your video made it finally click on my brain. Thank you soo much for this my man!!!! Keep up the brilliant work Instant sub 🔥
got a lot out of this. really helped string some concepts together. didnt mind the video length, I just took it slow and watched it in segments, going back when needed. By the end I was a bit disappointed you didnt get to uses of the diminished or minor7 flat 5, and those other common ways of shifting key
Sir, thank you. You are an amazing teacher. You kept me hooked the whole time. Had to pause and rewind few times to really get it but, the secondary dominant is a cool tool.LOL. New subscriber here. Keep it up! God bless you!
Jeff, i think what you forgot to talk about (but did in the entire video) is the upper melody of the the chord progression. It's a great tool for accompaniment. Great content! Thanks!
Incredible video. I subscribed to your channel. You start from basics and introduce new concepts logically adding layers. And I love that you don't show off, even when doing the advanced stuff eg. you still held the tonic in the left hand, even for the final parts of the video. Other TH-cam pianists would be adding complex substitutions. And I love that you believe in explaining the why behind the theory, not just saying "here's a 2-5-1!" Looking forward to watching your other videos. Keep up the awesome work!
Excellent point.....The 1 2 3. if you will is very common in film scoring to creating moods, you don’t need to move the chord far at all to create a feeling, half step and thirds do a lot
I'm a big fan, Jeff! You are a truly natural teacher. I love your pace and your clarity; you have a way of giving really simple solutions to things. Just wondering if you'd be into maybe playing a bit for us? Would love to hear you kill some standards!
Jeff, that was really well done. I am a music theory instructor and I was impressed with how well you explained that. I love the way you had the keyboard show with colored keys for what you were playing when you spoke. Can I ask you how you did that? I really could use that technique for an online history of jazz course I am developing.
+Luanne Fose Thanks so much, Luanne. The program is called Synthesia. It's very helpful for teaching, indeed. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I watch to the end. You're Awesome, Made it understandable even for a bass player wanting to learn piano and theory To learn my fifths I taught myself this saying C children G go 1# D down 2# A and 3# E eat 4# B breakfast 5# F# french toast 6# And my 4ths C children F fix 1b Bb babies 2b Eb eggs 3b Ab and 4b Db doughnuts 5b Gb Great job 6b Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was so surprising to see that after watching this vid for the first time, I took some time to learn and study some theory and practice, to see how it goes, and coming back here months later feels like it was all worth it. It made so much sense to me and I could guess things right before you answered them. YAY!!! :) I love your content
I have never seen a youtuber trying so hard to think of more content for a video instead of having it short in multiple videos for more views. TH-cam should really give you a medal for best contents of the year. Keep doing it!
Content is uncountable
Yeah you gotta love how he decided to keep them short and is happy to cover several topics in a vid.
I agree
@@@Nicdehouwer ....are you slightly guilty of missing the point ?
@@Gerard_2024 went above his common sense. LOL. sad. haha
This is incredible. I'm watching this at midnight and can't wait to wake up tomorrow and crush all these chords. Thank you Jeff :)
haha thanks Dmitriy! I hope you're making some great music!
Dudeeeee same, midnight but excited af to make some music tomorrow. That up a 5th, down a 4th blew my mind.
Just discovered your channel, and it is literally life changing. My playing is already so much more sophisticated and tasteful than before. I love that you actually explain the theory behind it because it makes the concepts easier to grasp.
So glad to hear that, Evan! Keep it up!
this is the first time I've watched an entire 20 minute video on youtube without skipping ahead
that's awesome to hear, thanks so much!
could do a part 2
It's was so smooth and natural
ZIPPABOI bad attention span
Your generosity is laudable.
The way you teach is so lucid, this video is opening my mind so much to the possibilities of composition. Thank you Jeff, it's much appreciated, keep it up!
Thank you, Patrick. I really appreciate it!
Hope he does more famous pop to say top chart sellers! and rock and roll like LUCILLE BY LITTLE RICHARD, NO ONE DID HIS SONGS.
I love that you just corrected yourself instead of rerecording it.We're human. a rose by any other name... Most importantly, Its the correction that will probably guarantee that I don;t forget it. Anyway, thank you and great lesson.
a rose by any other name!
It’s called laziness...

Indeed you do have a great flair in explaining and clarifying (in real time) exactly what you're doing without being condescending. Wonderful stuff.
