    I was on a web forum based around the development of an OoT 2D all the way back in 2004. The developer went by TRM (he had a longer name but I'll use the initials for privacy) and shared lots of screenshots and status updates, but only a couple small tech demos. Enough to get a huge following without being very impressive.
    People on the forum, including myself, mainly shared our ideas and WIPs for our own original fan-games. TRM used Game Maker (version 5.3 baby!) so many of us tried that as well. The first thing I ever made when learning GM was a recreation of the Ocarina system, which included all the notes, pitch-bends, fade-outs, recording and playback, and everything. When TRM saw it, he declared "That's it, I'm using this!" which I guess was supposed to be an honour? But the fact is he didn't even ask, and being my first GM project, the code was very standalone and not something that could just be imported to another project. I mean it even used a nonstandard frame rate as a cheap "fix" for my own timing errors. I tried to discuss these things and got basically no dialogue, which was a clue that this wasn't going anywhere.
    So, long story short, a lot of people held out hope for a long time, but this OoT 2D was going nowhere and turned out to be mostly bluster. Many of us understood that it would have been way too much work for a single hobbyist developer, so it's no big deal that his big ideas eventually fizzled out, but there had been so much exaggeration and deception along the way, that the forum TRM had started eventually booted him and lived on as its own fan-game forum. A handful of its users have gone into professional development since then, so that's a plus.

      You're refering to the ZFGC fourm, right? I haven't been there in a while. When I was there lurking I remember seeing Horn of Balance which I believe is still being worked on. There was another unique fan game where the guy shadowed TRM, King Mob of Shadowgazer and Dampe's OOT2D and built up something from a basic engine. I haven't see any talk about his game but the one dude, ConnorTheWaffle, did he got scared of Nintendo he took down clips of the fan game in question and only that one.
      I don't recall the name of the guy who is making the game (he has several) but he hangs out on the channel of another guy from ZFGC, Dream Mix who built an engine from scratch after Nintendo went after him.
      Then there's the other OOT2D from Cheerful Sage. There was a lot of hype for that one but it died after an update. But people keep talking about it as if it's still going.

      Oh wow, I remember TRM and Dampe from way back as well.
      These remakes, along with Metroid Prime 2D were some really earlier demakes out there.
      Honestly, am surprised OoT2D never got further than it did. Especially these days, with some of the solo 2D games and even some 3D remakes/demakes, OoT2D isn't as big a challenge as it once seemed.

      @@ZeranZeran MSU-1 is a custom chip designed recently by a famous hacker. It lets you add gigabytes of CD quality sound to games and it'll work with original SNES hardware if you're using the SD2SNES or FXPak flashcarts. So you can play Chronograph Trigger with the music replaced with a real orchestra recording for example. Lady Decade should probably do a video on it tbh.

    I used to be active on a fan game forum and there I saw quite a few OoT 2D projects start and fail, and understandably so.
    Speaking as someone who has made a few games and has been involved in some fan game creation in my younger years, I will say it's a naïve dream to think one person can make a full OoT 2D game, without it being a paid job. Even with a high-level programming language and all the helpful tools we have right now, it's such a massive undertaking. You never realize it until you get into it, no matter how much you plan, and even with experience of completing a few games under your belt, projects are always more involved than you expect.
    My advice to fan game creators is to go short and sweet, almost like a demo or vertical slice, but actually making it a game that has a proper start and end. Choose one or two things that you absolutely love the most and want to do and make that the focus. Don't get me wrong, this is also a difficult thing to do, especially with a Zelda fan game, but it's much more possible than taking on a full demake. And if you really want to take on a full demake, start with the part of the game you love the most or want to make the most. You don't have to start with the beginning of the game. Worst case is that you don't finish, but hey, you have your favorite part playable. Best case is that having your favorite thing completed early helps to keep you motivated to stick with it to the end.

I didn't have a N64 yet so I used to dream that if they split Ocarina of Time across eight SNES cartridges then you would be able to play it on a SNES. I was actually a moderator on Dampe's OoT2D forum. Those were such good times. There were many people who were also creating their own fan games (mostly on easier stuff like RPGmaker). Lots of Zelda fans talking about their favorite games speculating over the Twilight Princess reveal trailers while we waited for progress to be made by Dampe. He would occasionally stop by the forum to say what's up. And then one day, one of the other mods posted the story that Dampe died in a car crash. Everyone was immediately skeptical. lmao
    It saddens me that to this day we still haven't gotten OoT2D. I would give my left nut to play it. 😞

    I think I would definitely play this demake of OoT, if only because of the barmy events that surround it.

  • @timhagedorn6890
    @timhagedorn6890 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only thing I don't like about the 2014 demake is the huge inconsistency in sprite resolution and scaling. Almost everything about this game could not have been rendered on the real SNES. Simulating all technical limitations constantly and accurately makes development more difficult, but I think people should pay more attention to this when developing demakes. Nevertheless, I have great respect for people who dare to launch such an extensive project!

    lol, I think everyone has made one of these at some point. TRM was the original pioneer from what I recall. I could be wrong, it's been awhile. I even put a OOT2D demo together, with the help of some talented people from ZFGC. Now I make dumb Sega Master System hacks, progress.
