  • Fredrik Eytzinger, author of the forthcoming Uthark: Sigurd Agrell and the Swedish Runes (Three Hands Press), sheds light on the little-known but pioneering work of Swedish scholar and esotericist Sigurd Agrell, who suggested that the Futhark rune sequence was encoded and carried a heritage from the Roman Mithras cult.
Through numerological investigations, Sigurd Agrell argued that the individual runes corresponds to spiritual and magical concepts from Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Phoenicia, Zoroastrianism and Swedish folk magic, based on their position in the rune alphabet. More exceptional, Agrell also elaborated on the correspondence between the individual runes, tarot cards, gods and goddesses from Antiquity and deities from the indigenous Sami people. He hinted at connections between the zodiac and the abodes of gods and goddesses from the Nordic pagan pantheon and could be regarded a cosmic chronicle.
Fredrik Eytzinger is a former student of ethnology and history of religions living on the west coast of Sweden. His current investigations are undertaken as an independent scholar, and he has an interest in Swedish folk magical customs and esoteric applications seen from a global context. In extension these subjects also involve the mythical lore surrounding magical practice, oneiric and astral experiences, and other perspectives on liminality. He is also co-editor of the magazine Feral Transmissions issued by the publishing house Belzebez and has partaken in several music projects such as the progressive metal band Masugn and the experimental music collective _Tulpa_.
