- This Is one of the best kettlebell lower body exercises for quads. Many of you are searching for this exercise to really focus on quadriceps development. The original video I made in 2008 -ish is on the smith machine before I had access to kettlebells.
This is a fast way to incorporate somersault squats. Also you can use a dumbbell but the ROM gets shorter the heavier the DB is. THIS IS A FANTASTIC BODYBUILDING KETTLEBELL EXERCISE.
If you dont have a Smith machine, this is the next best. And for some people, It is the best setup !

I just tried this today and holy shit it smoked my quads.
🎯🎯🎯🔥
your videos have been vary informative. I use to do a lot of power lifting until I had a stroke in 2007 was totally paralyzed on my left side. told I would most likely die within a year. obviously I haven't but I have gotten away from barbells and refuse to put a bar on my back. so I have gotten into kettlebell and bodyweight. Guys like you,Steve Cotter and Mike Mauhler have made me glad I did. thank you. I will never quit training and with your help maybe I will live a little longer.
reg profant love your drive man!
I am gonna try this. No matter what I never feel squats in the quads. It’s always the glutes that get sore. Thanks a lot Joe.
Im sorry already
@@kettlebellmusclegain oh the pain, I wasn’t prepared for that. Please, next time put some warning in the videos like this
I tried it, was like "huh I don't feel anything". Then I tried walking around as rest after the set, and my quads were jello. It's like a leg press machine from hell.
Yessir. I make sneaky stuff
These are absolutely brutal! Great form instruction Joe, I really had to focus on the upper torso position to isolate the quads and not cheat using the hip/glute. Thanks again!
Welcome
So awesome. I’d been half-looking for something to fill in for leg extensions (no machine). Thank you!
Sorry to your legs in advance
I realize this video is over 3 years old but I have started doing these squats and I don't feel the crazy burn in my quads until I finish each set, it's a crazy aftershock but also while I am doing these squats I feel it working my calves overtime! I don't know if you feel it in your calves like I do but its pretty badass either way.
Yes ! And yes you can feel in calves especially if you dont have the best ankle mobility your calves will be very tense to keep you from falling forward$
Quads are on fire! Another great video, Joe!
+Jason Moore thank you
Ooooohhhhhh I love seeing new ways to use Kettlebells, I’m gonna do these after back squats today and I pledge myself to your teaching, Darth Sidious haha!! Thanks man
Do it!
Tried these for the first time today. Oh dear lord the lactic acid burn in the quads is insane with these!
Yes. Super intense.
I bought a kettle bell just for this! Thanks for the detail I think I know how to perform it better now.
+drottie really? Awesome.,what are your goals? Lets get you doing more with that kettlebell!
I am going to add these into my quad days...I saw you uses a band as well. Thanks Joe!
Enjoy
Great vid. Once again I am astounded by the versatility of kettlebells. Most definitely adding this one to the arsenal. Thx Joe! Keep up the great work.
Thanks. You'll like it
Great video Joe! Very practical now w/ a kettle bell. Never heard of somersault squats until today. Will include this in my leg routines. Thank you.
+ET aawesome!
Thanks Joe Daniels! So glad i searched for your video as you mentioned this in a recent stream!
Cool thanks for listening!
I do those since you first introduced them !!!! Thanks !!!
Nice!
I tried this today and this is golden !
Nice. Wait til tomorrow. ;)
dope! did not expect that pattern.... thx Joe
+Jetblacksmash welcome!
Once again shared this video 😎
Thanks so much!
Had to wait until leg day. Wow these work. Warmed up with my 50 3 sets of 7 and then on to my 100 3-7. that with a light squat day and I'm good. Thanks
Yes they do. From 10 reps to 100 they do. ;)
Great stuff... Barbell squats kill my back and on ankle.... This looks like something I can do!!
+Barry Irlandi yes pair with kettlebell swings
great tips..tried this, yesterday and legs feel great aching with no back pain at all!!!
nice!!
I was sceptical but I gave them a go and holy shit my legs were on fire 👍 my son has also nick named them "the butt wiggle exercise" 😁
Well done dad ! 👏 Hahahah
Thanks lot bro. Idk what caused this idea to come in ur mind but its great . I thought it was garbage to be honest but man i was dead wrong! Thamks alot
Nice man! I am going to try this out!
+DomeRokRz easiest way to setup
Thanks a lot! I did it today and felt great! I'll do it every leg workout!! One question: With this exercise I felt a great pump in my Vastus Intermedius, but I'm also looking to develop my Vastus Lateralis (the outer portion of the quads), just like yours!. Can you recommend some exercises for the Vastus Lateralis? Thanks Joe!!
this will do it over time along with massage
since my wife kbells are on the light side and i only have a t-handle bell, i did a test using her 8 kg kbell with a purple band doubled over, fire!!! man where do u get these ideas, love the circular motion for arms also!! we see u in japan money!!
+roler miles great work.,yes banded makes it tough! Thanks for sharing in Japan. Have you subbed to our TH-cam.com/swingthis1 channel?
+roler miles I just see different angles than most people do.
yeap been subbed for a sec, keep motivating us!
roler miles thank you! ill do my best!
Man this is amazing !!
Thanks. Yes it is.
Best movement for the quads
Agreed!
Love it!
+Daniel Groves awesome, glad it works for you
Its look good i try IT,thx
✌️😍
Very good. going to try that with my 32 kg tomorrow
+Alan Hold works well!
@@kettlebellmusclegain is it okay if I do it more slowly and also a bit of knees (almost) locked at the end of the movement?
Sure. I do what feels best to me and has grown my quads well.
How do you feel about coming off the heels as you get into the bottom position? Can’t get there at all unless I do
No problem. Just put a slantboard under them or a plate
These actually made my deadlift go up
Nice to hear!
Looks good exercise to try thank you for sharing, any for calves
go to my page and search calves in the magnifying glass I have a few

Thank you so much, new subscriber
awesome well thank you and nice to meet you!!
Can you reasonably overload this though?
2x48kg. That's 212lbs. Absolutely. This can massively change your quads over the years.
👍 it's good
Thank you. Such a burner
Hey Joe, do you think these can replace back squats in a routine? I’m looking to remove barbell work in favour of kettlebells but would like to maintain my current strength and size!
No
This is just for quad focus. Keep kettlebell rack squats in routine. As well
Thank you for this. I did 20 reps and felt already in in my hamstring area as well. I'm pretty sure it will also work the glute hamstring tie in area?
It will stretch that area.
@@kettlebellmusclegain Thank you!
any advice for this exercise if you keep ending up in quite a wide stance with feet pointing out slightly? Can’t seem to hit the depth you do either (assuming all comes down to mobility?)
should be fine. as long as your knees are hinging and not putting undue rotational stress on them.
When I do this I bend my back, but if I do it with lighter weight I can do it too many times, what should I do?
+The chemistry Nerd flexed spine is alright on,this exercise as there is no weight Nice the hip joint. Think about a somersault . back is rounded. And this has less stress and pressure on the spine as that does.
I can't squat five hundred fifty pounds in einem doing 20 kg Kettlebell and I'm dying
+Livestronger tough huh?!
I asked a famous coach what he thinks of this exercise and he said it's rubbish.
My question is why is there such a stigma and have you thought to popularize more it on podcasts and such?
I'm sure he's never tried it. Also I could care less. People who knows share it. Also it got popularized in 2009 by one of the most prominent bodybuilding figures so,.....
❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤
would dumbell work?
Sure if it gives you enough room. Elevate yourself with blocks or something.
Does this strain the lower back?
There is absolutely zero weight on the back as weight is on the upper quads. You may feel a stretch in backbor hams if youre really inflexible
@@kettlebellmusclegain ok thank you for the reply. I didn't understand that all of the weight was supposed to be supported by the upper quads. I'll give it another go tomorrow
Dude your quads... Oak trees.
Trained them alot over the years plus mountain biking
Your nick name is torquemada
Ouch!
OMFG🤮 😂
You're welcome
Holy crap dude. This makes Hindu squats seem like a waste of my time.
Yep
More weight, less balance. Both are good
Never done those....i will start to get a couple of them tree trunks
Target the quads not isolate, no squat ever isolated anything
Yes but you'll see through reciprocal inhibition there is next to zero hamstring and glute help . Really it's not a "squat" but a knee extension. "Somersault Knee Extensions" isn't catchy 😆
My ankle mobility wont let me go down 😭
Elevate your heels. On a plate or 2x4. Then work on your ankle s ;}
Thanks man....I get a lot out of your videos ...I appreciate ..Long Beach Long Island here !!
+David Dugan hell yeah! Thsanks. And feel cree to share anytime or ask questions!
been doin these since i saw u doin them back ina day, but had to get creative and use neutral grip handle and small a piece of chain, taadaa! neutral grip hump squats!
Heck yeah man thanks for supporting!
I still share this video all the time
Thanknyou!
I'm giving you funny looks for some reason.😁😁😁. Never saw this movement before - hump squats - but it seems really good for the quads. Thanks for the upload.
Yeah buddy!
Joe and others, what am I doing wrong? I'm not a big ex-bodybuilder like Joe but I can do somersault squats with 40kg forever. I must be doing something wrong. It shouldn't be this easy
likely nothing wrong with your form, it's one of those fancy exercises that are a poor choice if you are serious about your training - if you put there enough weight, your arms will extend before your quads get fatigued, just do squats, leg press or leg extensions. Reverse nordics w kb if you lack equipment to do the former. These guys trying to reinvent the wheel with silly unconventional exercises usually do it only to get some views and nothing else.
It's just an accessory like a leg extension for those without access to that machine. Serious about training 😂😂😂😂
@@kettlebellmusclegain except it's not similar to leg extension at all, more similar to leg press, but even then - your arms are going to give up their position before your legs do, and idk how heavy kb you need to have to fatigue your quads without doing 20+ reps. It's a poor exercise.
It is pure leg extension with zero hip extension at all. This shows you've never done this. Please only talk about what you have experience with.
like frog squats
+doctorred13 setup is similar. more range of motion,
This!
The best way!!
great pump i used a dumb bell thanks joe
+THEGIZS youre welcome. That works just fine
I wonder if you could do that with a landmine as well...
You can.
Hey Joe Daniels, do you like your altra shoes? I wear Hoka or innov8's. I was thinking about trying them out. Any feed back on them would be nice. Thanks, swing this kettlebell and strength.
Love altras. I beat em up as I weigh a lot for how much i move. But will be buying more. Soon.
Okay, 😜🤘call me an ass, but I'm thinking🤔squatty potty all the way on this movement🤣🤣. Needless to say! I'll be doing this 💩all week long Mr. Daniels. Thanks again.
Absolutley
How are those shoes ?
Oh! Now I get it from this view, it's like a belt squat
Close but less glutes involved. But yes weight placement like belt squat
Are these the same as bootstrap squats?
Setup is similar,
I made a vid about these in 2009 seems boostrappers came in 2010? Somersault allows much heavier loading and is much more challenging.
Congrats on your W !!!!!!!!
You talking about the gold medal in snatch? Well thanks!
Trying this one.
Its good stuff
My new favorite squat! Extremely effective. Thanks
Yes. Youre welcome.
Love this squat
+Don Giafardino thanks. No glutes involved but pairs great for kettlebell sport athletes.
I watched original video about 1 year ago and since than i used it as finisher and the result is fenomenal. Thanks Joe
+MGTOW1968 Thank you for your feedback! Glad it helped you. Joe
Thanks Joe! This is great, how would you compare it to a hack squat? First impression is that I can handle more weight than a hack squat, plus I always felt an uncomfortable pressure in the knee with a hack squat.
+Mathew Waehner nit too much a fan of hack squats. I like behind the back deadlift though
