he also enjoyed a reputation for "mechanical sympathy" meaning he was fast and didn't break the gear doing it, in a time when structural failure was a huge issue
Absolutely true, and if he had lived he would have won the championship in 68, 70, (71 if Chapman hadn't gone 'inventive') and 72 at least. And most likely he would be driving a tractor in Scotland as I write this, at 82.
Fun Fact: Donington re-opened long after the war in 1977 after the place fell into disrepair, so the greats like Jim Clark never got to drive these cars here. Though judging by the AI, it was probably for the best...
This being the 1938 circuit, people actually raced on it in cars with vastly inferior handling and "safety" (probably no seatbelts, if you crashed back then a fire was pretty much certain, they preferred to take their chances with being thrown out) compared to these 1960's motors... they probably weren't much slower in a straight line, though.
Tip for driving the lotus, work on the deceleration side of the differential, and use the gearbox and engine braking to aid braking, i spent 10 + years playing gpl in the lotus and the one thing i noticed in your video was the late downshifts, and how using the engine braking will aid corner turn in. Im no expert but thats my thoughts Extra thought... once the engine is doing most of the braking on the rear wheels, more brake bias to the front can be applied without control loss, and improve stopping performance
JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was the Best of the Best. No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark. This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius... 3
Fantastic. Love the track. My Dad took me to see Jim Clark race this car in New Zealand in the mid 60s. We were up close to a corner sitting in a stand looking down on the cars. Amazing.
Love the video! 6 minutes on is just MAYHEM! Great inside pass and then buddy tossing his car through the grass to a amazing wood filled fight and a wonderful save on the grass! Kudos sir!
Great video Jimmy! you’re one hell of a driver, it looks so much fun and scary at the same time. Thank you for the awesome content, had a great time watching this
Jim Clark belongs to the pantheon of very talented drivers that never got a championship, definitely on my top three on that list alongside Stirling Moss and Gilles Villeneuve!
Amazing to see these old tracks, they were more a rally stage than anything and I can't imagine how scary it was to drive F1 cars around there Btw now I understand why it's called Donington PARK, cause it litterally used to be a park.. And a farm.. and a public road
Never realized what a cool track Pre-War Donington park was. I’ve never really seen a racetrack with a canopy that completely covers the track, except the straight leading to ascari at Monza. And even then, the trees don't cover the track quite like they do here. It would be amazing to see a modern racing circuit travel through a forest road like this.
I wish the guy and girls at Kunos kept going with Assetto Corsa content. Their cars models were second to none. 50's, 60's and 70's DLC would be amazing. Sports car and Formula 1 cars from each era so we could have proper grids with a good mix of cars.
This is so weird, was watching some old footage of this car the other day and thought "I wonder if Jimmer has done anything like this in VR" Keep up the awesome content dude :)
I tried for weeks trying to get under 1:29 at historic monza GP in this car for that one time trial. I think I managed a low 29 before I just started cheesing it on the wall because I wanted that damn achievement. Jim Clark was a monster.
I'm into the SimRacing business and like to try old historic cars... One word...they were CRAZY literally crazy to drive those things, at those speeds and on those tracks. I mean it was beyond suicidal, it was simply an hour or so constantly at a whif from death or being seriously handicapped for life.
This are the sickest Cars of Car History. 400Hp. And when you build out the Engine and the Tyres 2 Guys could easy lift the Car. This was some Rocket on Wheels without any Grip.
Looks like the driver's position, at least in this video, is significantly off-center and is moved to his left. Is this intentional, or a limitation of the onboard recording, or just where AC positions the driver, or what? and btw, as someone who spent hundreds and hundreds of hours in GPL back in the day, this is just the absolutely coolest video. :)
that car is a riot to drive. i feel like i cant get anywhere near what its capable of because four wheel drifting is how you go fast so you have no room for error if youre going for 100%
The Lotus 49 is my favorite racing car possibly of all time. But somehow I don't like the way it drives in either AC as Pcars1. They are just very different from what I would imagine it to be, with both I felt like there was no rubber on the tires. However I do think Pcars 2 has almost nailed it, even with historic tires. It took me right back to the days of Grand Prix Legends.
Would love to see you have a crack at some GPL...there's a cracking rework of Spa these days and Spa's only around a month away so, you know, get practising 👍
Great Video, thnx Jimmy. I joined & started to follow. Sorry for the newbie dumb question, but A) What is this game called? & B) Are there other games out/available where you could drive as or vs the Who’s ‘Who’ of Racing’s Golden Age? Without a doubt Jim Clark is The George Washington of Racings Mt.Rushmore. My last dumb question C) Does a game exist to race during Jim Clark’s Era in World Championship Gran Prix’s & The Indianapolis 500? Thank you for any info for the above!
Looking left, watching the red Ferrari get completely airborne across the main straight.. breathtaking. Why the hell have I not driven here?? Oh yeah.. I don't have a death wish. Oh well.. time to give this charismatic classic a go.
What's the clutch actually like when you're using pedals? Is it like a real one where there's a bite and it's like... 'gradual' or is it like... a button. if that makes any sense? Only clutch ive used in games is on a gamepad, which is literally a button obviously haha
Is there an option to race the "49" with it's "aero package" (Don't think Jim Clark ever drove that version though). Respect to anyone who sat in one of these cars for real, let alone raced it in areal Grand Prix.
I'd love to see Hamilton, Vettel, and Shumacher go at it in these cars. Before you say "oh they could never drive a car like that" remember this. Great drivers can drive whatever you put them in.
Tragedy at Donington today as 23 drivers lose their lives in a single GP.
Some of them twice
Jim Clark, arguably the best race car driver of all time. No matter what the car is, he would drive its wheels off
he also enjoyed a reputation for "mechanical sympathy" meaning he was fast and didn't break the gear doing it, in a time when structural failure was a huge issue
Jay Calloway
For me Ayrton Senna is the very best racing driver of all time but Senna's idol was Jim Clark! So I respect your argument.
His laptimes were also very consistent. With those bathtubs made of knives it's impressive.
Absolutely true, and if he had lived he would have won the championship in 68, 70, (71 if Chapman hadn't gone 'inventive') and 72 at least. And most likely he would be driving a tractor in Scotland as I write this, at 82.
I wanna see him and shelby race
Fun Fact: Donington re-opened long after the war in 1977 after the place fell into disrepair, so the greats like Jim Clark never got to drive these cars here. Though judging by the AI, it was probably for the best...
Jim Clark the legend! Also R.I.P. Sergio Marchionne
At least 3 AI drivers are literally killed during this video. Or they would if it were real, anyway.
iM3GTR And 2 are having a cuppa tea.
F
3:17 for sure And 6:47 idk
Big Balls simulator 1967......

"What's It Like Driving Jim Clark's Lotus 49?"
Scary.
..... and damage is turned off!
Wheel doesnt even deform from hitting your head on it, 0/10 bad sim.
buzz the engine 100rpm on a downshift and blow it up. Touch wheels with another car and suspension bends. 10/10 sim!
fun*
Fantastic. Love the track. My Dad took me to see Jim Clark race this car in New Zealand in the mid 60s. We were up close to a corner sitting in a stand looking down on the cars. Amazing.
Please, more classic cars like this jimmer!
Loved to see cars flying all over the place. One of the best videos I have seen in sim racing. This VR looks awesome. Congrats!

Love the video! 6 minutes on is just MAYHEM! Great inside pass and then buddy tossing his car through the grass to a amazing wood filled fight and a wonderful save on the grass! Kudos sir!
Love your commentaries. Really makes it exciting to watch. Keep it up mate!
Makes you appreciate Clark's talent when you watch his onboards. So smooth...
Wow, what an awesome track!!! :D
Don't think I have seen an old layout of Donington before!
Thank you for this!
And what an awesome car as well!! :)
Brilliant video Jimmy. Especially loved passing through the railway bridge
Great video Jimmy! you’re one hell of a driver, it looks so much fun and scary at the same time. Thank you for the awesome content, had a great time watching this
3:25 guy on the left gets some airtime!
Watching the suspension work was one of the things I really loved about Grand Prix Legends. Nice to see you in the old Lotus.
Lap around Nürburgring when?
Oooft that is some real graft
Would be totally legitimate, it did race there back in the day.
The patience have you not.
I would like to add that it's awesome in VR, especially with an H-pattern
With the wings please, if an option.
Amazing Driving Jimmy, Love the Old School Track & Car. Tanx for the video & look forward to many more ;-)
Jim Clark belongs to the pantheon of very talented drivers that never got a championship, definitely on my top three on that list alongside Stirling Moss and Gilles Villeneuve!
You may want to go and look up 1963 and 1965.
Wicked awesome throwback.
Awesome driving fellow Pleb.
Amazing to see these old tracks, they were more a rally stage than anything and I can't imagine how scary it was to drive F1 cars around there
Btw now I understand why it's called Donington PARK, cause it litterally used to be a park.. And a farm.. and a public road
3:22 YEEEET!
He just got yote

I'm older ... love these 60s cars - thanks for posting this :)
looks like alot of fun.. keep up the good pace mister jimmer..
Engine Status:

CalumF1 automobilista has this but they don’t have any of the licenses so they can only do custom liveries
Mods my dude theyve got you covered
@@perfectentrytrading yep , there are planty of very fast coffins from the past days of racing .
This is so weird, was watching some old footage of this car the other day and thought "I wonder if Jimmer has done anything like this in VR" Keep up the awesome content dude :)
Oh, man. The track side trees and the stone bridge. Serious motivation to keep it on the tarmac!!
That yellow car flyin off out the back looked awesome.
I tried for weeks trying to get under 1:29 at historic monza GP in this car for that one time trial. I think I managed a low 29 before I just started cheesing it on the wall because I wanted that damn achievement. Jim Clark was a monster.
Dude even with your no off you drive like a madman well done as always Jimmer!
brilliant.... great driving Jimmy...what a circuit....
I'm into the SimRacing business and like to try old historic cars...

I mean it was beyond suicidal, it was simply an hour or so constantly at a whif from death or being seriously handicapped for life.
Just found your channel, holy shit man, what awesome videos you produce.
I saw that car at Watkins Glen in the late 60's. I saw Jim Clark from about 20ft away. I was 7or8 years old. I have a good memory!!! I'm not kidding.
As an old GPLer I must say that this it's the best representation made of the 49 since then.
3:22 I checked the comments the moment I heard it
When F1 was crazy ass dangerous. Love it!
When sex was safe, and cars were dangerous...
This are the sickest Cars of Car History.
400Hp. And when you build out the Engine and the Tyres 2 Guys could easy lift the Car.
This was some Rocket on Wheels without any Grip.
This is by far my fav car in assetto. It's so much fun!
One of my favorite cars for a Sunday drive through the Scottish Highlands.
This was quite entertaining, sir!
Beast! The Lotus is pretty crazy too
6:49 *Chris Tucker voice from Rush Hour 1* WOOOO, YOU KNOW HE DEAD
Bobsled with a bomb on the back
for me, seeing Donnington in that layout is just as thrilling as the car
Man, that's just a beautiful track.
F1 cars jumping! Say CHEESE!
JESUS! how EVERY driver back then wasnt killed i don't know... mad respect for the people who raced these cars and tracks.... legends
This is the kind of content I love
6:45 R.I.P yellow car driver
Yellow Car Driver
2018-2018
R.I.P. "He went out with style"
Yeeeet
3:16, *car casually flipping "THATS A LOTTA DAMAGE"
Been waiting years for this!!! Thx jimmer!
Jim Clark the greatest F1 driver of all time.
What about trying Grand Prix Legends Jimmy.
Carlos Fandango GPL is so much harder than AC,
Carlos Fandango yes. GPL! Everything else is everything else.
Great stuff well done 👍🏻
Looks like the driver's position, at least in this video, is significantly off-center and is moved to his left. Is this intentional, or a limitation of the onboard recording, or just where AC positions the driver, or what?
and btw, as someone who spent hundreds and hundreds of hours in GPL back in the day, this is just the absolutely coolest video. :)
its like that in real life in this car
6:20 listen very very carefully at the gear shift because i think i hear a turbo dump valve
Never seen this layout before. Reminds me a bit of Longford.
What an awesome, insane looking track!! The older racing just looks crazy. How did they not all die??
Imagine that track in today F1... Vettel will loose it at the bridge and crash out and Le Clerc will try pulling a 360 while driving through it!
Paul Shepperd and stroll will pay it too only let him trough
Kimi would probably drift just before the end on his 2 purple sector qualis run
that car is a riot to drive. i feel like i cant get anywhere near what its capable of because four wheel drifting is how you go fast so you have no room for error if youre going for 100%
Holy hell, that bridge is an absolute deathtrap.
I believe there used to be a speed limit and no overtaking rule at copice back in the day since it went through someone’s garden/ driveway
Funny to think of how many race tracks used to be basically endurance tracks, but over the years they’ve downsized.
I'd actually argue that modern F1 has retained this aspect; of being a long-distance endurance race, but now FAST and ultra safe.
This one has grown, not downsized, it used to be 3.5km and the current track is 4km
Would love to see you have a crack at some GPL...there's a cracking rework of Spa these days and Spa's only around a month away so, you know, get practising 👍
3:15 so was hoping Jimmy would go back and take a look at that one. That was a big ass wreck
I would love to see you do something with the Caparo T1!
Great video Jimmy... my dad named my brother after Jim Clark. 😎
Jim Blo?
When you started the race my phone screen change to night mode and I was like 'shit I feel just like I'm in the past'
100% thought you were dead at 8:50
3:22 Unmarked product placement? *hard thonking*
Lotus and Jim Clark, WOW !!!!!
Excellent! Thanks!
Does anyone know the name of the tune playing at the beginning of the video while Jimmy is talking? Really like it!
those 60s cars were awesome
Great Video, thnx Jimmy. I joined & started to follow. Really good one that jimmer x
Anyone here remember Grand Prix Legends and how fast Jim Clark AI was?
Yeah, played that game to the extreme and even in that game the AI eventually became too slow. Only place to race was online.
Amazing how this only looks slightly better than some mods for Grand Prix Legends from 15 years ago.
jesus christ these men were certified insane. racing was a deathmatch with fate every lap!
Jimmer will u ever do a GPLegends playthrough?
Looking left, watching the red Ferrari get completely airborne across the main straight.. breathtaking.
Why the hell have I not driven here?? Oh yeah.. I don't have a death wish. Oh well.. time to give this charismatic classic a go.
Beautiful Jimmo
What software and wheel are you using?
The commentary deserves a second 👍🏻
🤣🤣
Thanks that track is amazing O_O!
What's the clutch actually like when you're using pedals? Is it like a real one where there's a bite and it's like... 'gradual' or is it like... a button. if that makes any sense? Only clutch ive used in games is on a gamepad, which is literally a button obviously haha
Cadwell is a track I'd like to see you do. It's one of the best tracks in the world

Hey Jimmy, guys here
