Dr. Demento introduced me to so many of my favorite musicians: Zappa, Devo, B52’s, The Residents, Talking Heads, and Shel Silverstein (his solo songs).
I wonder how many young kids like me owe their first exposure to these geniuses to his eclectic show. There was no other way to come across them on the radio back in the 70’s.
Fun fact: my friend Craig gets to make the official B52s documentary with the band next year. I’m lobbying him hard to include Dr. Demento’s contribution to their national discovery. He was INSTANTLY onto them and had to be the first to give them national radio play.

So? Is the good Doctor given his due by the B52s??

I really wish I could hang out with that guy on the left. He seems like my kind of extreme ectomorphic music weirdo.

I saw that tour with Tom Waits opening too (in San Jose). I remember wondering why this guy was doing a comedy act imitating Jack Kerouac. Later I got hipper (Tom and Frank had the same manager, Herb Cohen). First time I saw Zappa was the Petit Wazoo mini-tour in San Francisco, December 1972. Good good stuff.
