I ordered this filter because as you said, it seems like the best all around filter. My only concern was the skimmer because all my fish in my 29 are babies. Thank you for showing it is possible to make that safe! Exactly what I needed to know! Good luck with your channel. Much success!
Thank you. I got up this morning with a neon tetra stuck in the inlet part. I removed the entire filter and managed to get it out. It was half-dead, so i dosed the entire tank with a double dose of stress guard. I immediately searched on google and came across your video. Followed your sponge suggestion and got everything going again.
Hi there, sorry to hear about your tetra, never nice seeing a tetra in trouble. Possibly the bottom where the motor is but hopefully the sponge does the trick do help it prevent it happen again, fingers crossed🤞
Hi all, my first review. Got a great little tip to keep your wet pets alive and well. What's your favourite hang on the back filter? Please like and comment and if you haven't already, please subscribe to follow me on my adventures in fishkeeping. Mark G
I really appreciated this video on how you put the pre-filter on the inside. I use the larger Seachem Tidal on all my tanks but I have one 20 gal. tank that I hesitated getting the 35 because of the filter intakes. I ordered one for $40.64US after watching your video. Installed it tonight and my first impression is I love it. Thanks Again!
Nice video - thanks a lot. Was going to spend all sorts of time modifying a Tidal 55 for a shrimp tank and now I can just get this and stick in some extra foam. I kept watching the partially open door to see if at some point someone looked through. It was starting to freak me out ha-ha.
Hi Mate, love the review you do. I bought the tidal 35 for the 10g nano a couple months ago nice little filter but one fault I found with this filter it does a bad or non existent skim of the surface bio film. Having been in touch with sachem about a month later for a reply there only advice is lower the level of water or raise the filter. So it's a no for me.
Hey Simon, I do like the filters, but I didn't like dropping my level so much for it to be able to skim. I use them on a couple of plant/fish holding tanks. I'm surprised by the long wait for a reply that they pride themselves on customer service. Next time I chat with the guys, I'll mention this.
Great video. I know I'm 9 months late but THANKS SO MUCH for the idea to keep shrimp/small fish safe. Hadn't thought of that. I have an sponge filter that will be sacrificed for this purpose. IMHO the skimmer does nothing on the 35. Might do something on the larger models but when my tank was new I had a bad biofilm on the top and it didn't do anything about it. Turning up the flow did more to control the biofilm by churning up the water more than the "skimmer" ever did. Was about to sell mine because I couldn't find a good shrimp solution. Using another more shrimp-safe HOB from JBJ but the water return points straight down so all the water motion is directly under it. Hate that. Will be dusting off the Tidal35, making it shrimp safe, and we'll live happily ever after.
Great video and I am in agreement with you the girls are too big it’s a great idea that you came up with specially when you’re breeding guppies and shrimps love you video thanks JD
I done the same with the intake sponges, but your gonna have to remove the whole Filter when its cleaning time and often, but it is no big deal. BUT i would then suggest removing the media media full stop and you then get so much more inside it and no awkward shapes etc PS What Canister Filters do you use?
Hi there, I keep my bio media in nets making it easier to remove and rinse. I use Oase Biomaster Thermo canister filters. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Depends on how heavy you stock with fish, this wasn't too bad, The whole insert pulls out and easy to clean, especially with the media in a net. Quick rinse in water removed from your tank👍😊
Sorry misread your question. They weren't too bad but I only used them on a lightly stocked tank or shrimp setup. Haven't needed to use this filter in years to be honest.
Nice review, Mark! I have my eye on the tidal for my future cichlid tank (55,75,or125gal I haven’t decided). Can’t wait to see your new set up in action! What are you using to filter your cichlid tank? Would you ever consider the tidal for cichlids? -also lol at tossing the directions, I’m the same way!!-
Thanks Mitchell, here's the link from an old video with a rundown of the Malawi tank, pretty much the same apart from the smaller JBL filter has been swapped for the Oase Biomaster Thermo 350 which is now my fave filter of all time👍 th-cam.com/video/K6J9XhOu-iw/w-d-xo.html
if its a larger than 35 you should get the marineland magnum internal if you want a hang on the back tidal is the best and the fluval filter is decent too www.chewy.com/marineland-magnum-polishing-internal/dp/196163?Marineland&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4dr0BRCxARIsAKUNjWSLvY-fItA3mfG_dSjPnKED_s41bYGw4u2lZPIppsCiezWDdAIFoosaAjClEALw_wcB
Love the filters, I have the Tidal 75 aswell, haven't needed to add the sponge as there are no shrimp. My only concern is the sponge may eventually damage the pump. As long as sponges are kept clean I had no issues and I'm glad it's working for you👍
@@GEORDIESCAPER My apologies, I haven't bought the filter yet. Just trying to find a good auto priming HOB with good flow. Currently using an Aqueon, but I need an upgrade.
I see....like I say I had no issues adding the sponge but I suppose making your own adjustments/improvements has it's risks and effects the warranty, which with the Tidal is 3+2 years which is great.
Is there a way to disable the surface skimmer? If not, would evaporation become an issue in an open top, rimless aquarium that gets water changes once a week?
Hi Duncan, unfortunately on the 35 model there isn't, not sure about the bigger models though. The skimming section is quite tall so there's quite a bit leeway before evaporation will take it under skimmer level. I fill my tanks up quite high to begin with. Hope this helps.
@@GEORDIESCAPER Okay. Thank you. This helps a ton! I was afraid of having to constantly top off the tank. I was ready to set up a sponge filter. Glad I don't need to!
Couldn’t you just put something underneath it to have it sit higher on the tank so it can surface skim with your higher water level? Granted it’d be a little bit fiddly to do but eventually you’d find something that it could sit on.
Great vid used these since they came out have to say fill it with pumice stone and it will do a flex but not much more they really exaggerate the clean ability but great vid as always
Thankyou, glad your enjoying the video and appreciate you taking the time to comment. I'm using it on my 30cm cube at the minute, filled with loose matrix....that's a video to come soon👍

Pronounced See Che = Sicce Fluval Aqua Clear Filters. Fluval also makes a C series HOB. I am sold on the Tidals though.
Yeah learned how to pronounce it.😊😊👍
How do you find the surface skimming it does bugger all on my tank.
