I agree with everything that Abdul Hakim Murad says in this lecture. For me Sh Abdul Hakim Murad is one of the most eloquent articulators of "Classical Islam" and (as Hamza Yusuf rightly said) an authentic ayatollah. I took shahada with him.

I am not sufi, nor do I agree with much as in the poems or dancing. Yet as an American born revert, I appreciate his balanced delivery, calm demeanor and wide knowlege of Islam in general.

Diane Stetson. I am also not a sufi but a lot of we hear about Sufis are misrepresentations. For example some of the concepts in metaphysics may be against basic Islamic principles yet they never use them that way in a real sense. Similarly, they sometimes develop a cult like devotion to their leaders but so do others. In fact their begets critics the salafism are the worst. Sufism represents the essence of Islam. It's a great way to soften hearts

Diane Stetson Sufism is not about singing and dancing. Sufism is about purification of the self. Restraining from sin fighting your ego and desires. We all need Sufism in our lives to become better people

I would like to remind myself that the current Christian concept of God as pure Love is only a recent vision of the Supreme Being ... Let us not forget the Nineteenth Century preachers who preached ' Fire and Brimstone' on the pulpit . A more balanced view of the Attributes of the Almighty .
A point for Abdullah K ... True , some sufi mureeds are excessive in devotion to their teachers , and some deviant teachers seem to encourage this . However , we start with no master to our wayward selves , the Sufi Masters devise an intermediate stage where you have a tangible authority in the form of the teacher with whom you practice 'obedience' while you are introduced to Allah and made to shift your obedience to Him . Sufi practice is all about taming our wayward self into a true servant with responsibility to take part in 'looking after' the World . To 'act up' as Vicegerants of our Lord .

Subhanallah, I think this might be one the shaykh's defining lectures. Certainly a necessary one for me at this stage in my life. Im like that ant that was mentioned in the poem travelling across the carpet. In the midst of the carpet (hardship) it doesn't make any sense all the bumps and imperfections the ant percieves. But to the creator of that carpet he sees all the interweaving that makes it perfect. Subhanallah what a allegory. Thank you shaykh, truly may Allah bless you and forgive you.

A very moving exposition of the Islamic Faith by a learned , coherent teacher who exudes the very serenity that he speaks of .
I find the 'mature converts to Islam' from other faiths have a much deeper grasp of the essence of our belief and a perfect understanding of total reality as we are prompted by our Islam to see existence.

Masha Allah, a beautiful lecture by Shakyh Murad. My only comment is that even though we are pleased with Allah's Decree we should still try and change a situation that is not as it should be. For example when u are sick u should take the means to get better, if you are out of work you should look for employment, if there is no Islamic society we should work to bring one. So contentment is in the heart but the limbs must take the means. This also is part of Ibada.

Greetings from South Africa! I seem to have come full circle in my pursuit of knowledge about Islam. When I stumbled upon Sh Abdal Hakim Murad's lectures I felt I had arrived in a safe, tranquil place. As I continued to try & understand the differences between Islamic groups & sects, & to search for more on a central Islamic doctrine, I decided to look into a figure I could relate to from my youth - that of Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)'s journey into Islam. And here I am, once again at the feet of Sh Abdal Hakim Murad! Coincincidence? I think not. My sincere gratitude to Allah (pbuh) for another opportunity to learn from this great scholar.

Absolutely. We've all witnessed it from others and perhaps ourselves... that if we pursue Duniya (the Life of this World), we will never be satisfied (at heart). Our desires are too big and this world is too small. The only true happiness and tranquility is to submission to the One True Lord = Allah. Truly a beautiful lecture.
