Flute Mali - Another US Concert - Fabulous

  • Two of Mali's US concerts are well known and available elsewhere. There is the one at Columbia University in 1978. Then there is the one in Los Angeles organized by violinist Dr. L. Subramanian which is commercially available in CDs. Here is a third one, and IMO, the best. The whole concert is excellent, and you can sense that from the beginning prelude alapna to the Bhairavi varnam. But Mali seems to transport himself to yet another level in the ragamalika portion of the Begada RTP, particularly in Kambodhi, Sindhu Bhairavi and Kapi. The normally aggressive Rukmini, who is usually open to any challenge, is awed and reduced to the role of providing sruti on the violin. The recording ends abruptly during the Kapi unfortunately. In terms of recording quality, this is one of the best I have.
    Enjoy! If you don't have time to listen to the whole concert, go to the last half hour or so to the ragamalika portion of the RTP. You will be rewarded.

      Mali played with flutes that have a relatively thick wall with high grain density. There is greater resistance to blowing and therefore requires stronger blowing, but the result, once you have mastered it, is deep and heavy natham, especially in the mandra sthayi. This is one of the many things that make Mali's music special.

    You have mentioned Smt. Rukmini was reduced to keeping Sruti on the Violin 🎻 during the RTP. Just realized that the Fiddle vidwan didn’t play at all for the entire Kalyani alapanai. Had it been Smt. Rukmini, she would have diligently followed Mali throughout the alapanai. Can only hear the Shruti during the entire alapanai with the Violin no where to be heard which essentially makes me wonder, if Smt Rukmini was the accompaniment on the fiddle at all in this concert! She would have not been so aloof and cutoff like this had she played, knowing fully well that she is not one to shy away from any curve balls that Shri Mali may throw at her!

      Yes, you can often tell from the initial few minutes how a concert is going to progress. The best part of this concert, IMO, is the last half-hour or so.

    Yes, this is special. One of Mali’s best concerts. Such awesome music!! It was held at the Sathguru Sangeetha Saba in Kozhikode (Calicut), Kerala, India, in 1985. I can’t recall names of accompanists, but not Rukmini and Shankran. Mridangists were a father-young son duo.

    Can someone tag the pieces being played? What’s the piece immediately following Viriboni varnam and before the Nalinakanthi? This is amazing. I have not heard much Mali. The opening strains of the Bhairavi alapana made my hair stand on end. Sounds otherworldly.

      The piece after the varnam: Ennadu Juthuno - Kalavathi raagam. If you have not heard much Mali, go to the playlist where I have selected 10 of his gems. That would be a great start.

      When Mali Sir is in the mood, there is no musician that comes close to him on the impact he has on the listeners. This comes from a combination of enormous practice at a very young age, intense concentration, unmatched musical ability and awareness of what makes music beautiful, and perhaps above all, a highly spiritual approach.

    Listen to the brief exploration from 2:33:50. A hint of Hindustani. I'm raga challenged but mishra pilu? I strongly believe the violinist is M. Chandrashekaran.

    • @bestofcarnaticflute2736
      @bestofcarnaticflute2736  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The violinist is definitely T. Rukmini. MC never toured the US to play for Mali. If it were MC, you would have heard a lot of "oohs" and "aahs"!
      I think the phrase you are mentioning is the long meend-like slide from ma to antara ga. The emphasis for Pilu is more on the lower ga. I think he is still sticking to begada and trying a new ma-ga combination which frankly is not working and taking one away from begada. There are at least 4 different types of ornamentation to the ma used in begada, with one in particular called the "begada ma". He is trying to introduce a new one and this touch alone disturbs the begada mood - so experiment failed, in my opinion.

      Sorry, I have no idea who it might be. It would take some detective work and interviewing people associated with organizing the concert (or someone who attended it) to get more detailed info. Or someone who is conversant with the styles of various mrdangam vidwans to listen and identify the playing style. @@bestofcarnaticflute2736
