If his managerial career ended in Oakland, he WOULD be in the Hall now. The 3 remaining Yankee rehires and the drama and lack of success killed his legacy.
I was in California during the BILLY BALL era. It was magic !! I'm no A's fan by any means. But what Martin did was miraculous and without precedent. Nice work, Billy !!!
When George Told Joe Torre how to make out the Lineup. Torre would tell George " Yes Sir ". When George told Billy how to make out the Lineup. Billy would tell George " Go to Hell, I'm the Manger. "
I don't know if I'd want Billy as a neighbor but I'll tell you one thing he was a best damn manager and the best entertainment I've ever watched in baseball. The billy yankee years were the absolute best and I really really really miss them. This Boone is a clown.
This documentary brought me back to a time that baseball was my number one pastime. Went to many games at Tiger Stadium and saw Billy Martin in action. I knew he was a Bad Boy of baseball, however, this really summed it up nicely. Great work and great commentary. Can’t wait for your next one
Thanks for this wonderful video. Despite Billy's anger management issues he gave me much enjoyment both on the field as a player and his manager years with the Yankees. In the mid 80's I had the unexpected pleasure of sitting next to and conversing with Billy and the Mick at the Bull & Bear Bar below the Waldorf in NYC where I was told they frequented every Thursday. At one point I, without thinking, mentioned that I was a Boston Red Sox fan. Even though I was twice his size I momentarily feared that I might have sparked an anger management moment. But Billy and Mick were perfect gentlemen and laughed. I think they sensed my 'oops' moment. Baseball could use more like him.
As a Yankees fan growing up in the 1970's,I lived the proceedings in real time. There is no retrospective on that period that can accurately describe the frustration and chaos of the time.... despite the 1977 and 1978 Championships. Much fun was drained out of winning as a result of the tumolt
Very well done documentary! Not only did I learn more about Billy Martin but I enjoyed hearing more about the history of baseball and seeing all of the photos you included. Great job Christian!
Cooperstown doesn't like to induct managers because they prefer that their inductees are inactive when they are inducted. The Football HOF and Hockey HOF's are very similar. So to get inducted as a manager 1. you have to be so old that they KNOW you're never coming back, and 2. have a long career/legacy with multiple championships, or have numbers that can't be ignored. (The John Madden rule as he had the best winning percentage in NFL history for coaches with at least 100 games in spite of only one Super Bowl appearance and win.) Billy never managed a single team for more than 3 full seasons in succession, and the bullcrap with Steinbrenner absolutely destroyed his legacy with each passing rehire. (And BTW I don't think George deserves to be in even though he is enshrined in Cooperstown.) Because of that 83-88 stretch, he's only remembered for the drama he caused and not his successes like Dick Williams is.
Awesome job Christian!!! You have a natural way of communicating stories. I really enjoy listening to you on your channel. I also didn’t realize he was more than a coach!
It's tough to capture the essence of Billy Martin in just one word, but I'm going to try. I would say that Billy Martin was "passionate". What other manager would bench his team's star player for not hustling, and then be willing to "throw down" with that player, even though he was nearly 20 years older, and 50 pounds lighter than his potential opponent? A person could make a case that Billy Martin was "baseball's honey badger".
There was the special on ESPN many years ago play interviewed 2 Retired umpires from Billy's managing days both of those guys said he was tough but he was fair they said he never came out in question something that was obvious they also said he knew the game far better than most managers. They spoke about the Pine Tar incident with George Cry-Baby Brett and both of those umpires agreed that call of him being out should not have been overturned. The bat was illegal yes only pine tar but Billy knew the rules
35:05 You mentioned that Billy retired and took up farming. Then you said that since the farm was in New York, that left Billy susceptible to a phone call, from Steinbrenner. What does that even mean?? Did I miss an important fact, along the way? Are you saying, that if Billy had bought a farm outside of the state, that Steinbrenner would not pay for a long distance phone call?? lol I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt but you are going to need to explain that better because as is, it makes very little sense.
Well first of all it’s called a metaphor, perhaps you’ve heard of one? Also this was the 1980s no cellphones. So if Billy lived in California instead of New York for example, it would of been harder for Steinbrenner to contact him. He would of probably had to send him a telegram, mail a letter or even physically fly out to where Billy lived. All I’m saying is that since Billy lived in New York it made it very easy and convenient for Steinbrenner to turn to him when the team was at its most valuable and needed a jolt of energy. It’s honestly not that deep lol.
New York & big City reporters in those days need their ass kicked more. They asked stupid questions & looked to build drama on purpose, so they were lucky they didnt get beat up more really.
Reggie was not shipped from Oakland to New York. He left Baltimore for free agency. FACT CHECK PLEASE! I also thought Jackson was benched because he just couldn't hit Splittorff., as was shown in the documentary The Bronx is Burning by ESPN. That one may be debatable.
Billy was the best manager ever. Good effort on this video. You need to work on your read timing, it sounds like you are randomly putting commas everywhere. Considering you can edit all the audio together and you didn't one take anything longer than 3 sentences it shouldn't be so stilted.
I appreciate Martins ability as a manager but people need to admit he was an asshole. If he managed a regular business he’d have ended up unemployed and in jail or drunk in an alley, not held up as some “firey leader”
reading these comments is like talking to someone in recovery with a bad case of euphoric recall, mediocre player at best, never had a HOF season leave alone career, managed 6 teams with 1 ring, whole lotta folks in front of him for Cooperstown....................................

It was very good to watch!!!
The master should be in the hall of fame. If he had lived through the 90s he’d probably be in the hall of fame by now.

Yes he should
Fantastic leader thanks for this hes my idol
Billy Martin should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, he was a great manager.
I fell in love with baseball as a kid in the 1970s. Billy Martin was a HUGE reason why. He brought toughness and grit everywhere he went. RIP Billy ⚾🙏
He's definitely a one of a kind!
That was about the best story I've ever heard about Ole Billy. Good job

Billy could turn teams around quickly....but he was crazy.
But rubbing the owner the wrong way while doing it

Fantastic. Stratigest
Billy and my dad grew up together in Berkeley...got in tons of trouble together 😂😂😂❤❤❤
That’s is hilarious. 😅
Correction: Yankees got Jackson after a season with the Baltimore Orioles.
Yes , you are correct . Jackson was a free agent in 1976.
martin and weaver understood that they had to put on a show for the fans
especially if the game was televised

Most definitely!
I just recently got his rookie card for my collection. :-)
I remember reading about the Marshmellow sales man incident haha. Cant make this s**t up, can ya ? lol.

Thanks Gio! I appreciate!!
Jackson was "infuriated and stormed into the dugout"; this kid simply won't let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Alfred Manuel Martin Jr was Billy's name, and belissimo is what beautiful in Italian means.
Cool
Baseball is too corporate and vanilla for a Billy Martin today. He is a legend and should be in HOF.
Agreed, Billy Martin would win every World Series but people would be mad cuz he probably hurt their feelings 😂

Reggie Jackson was on the Orioles bro....then to New York.
He did but the story was more about Billy than Reggie. That’s why I skipped that part
Thank God, I'm a Country Boy. Not a cowboy, get the song right.
The fact that Billy Martin is not in the HOF is a fucking travesty. It's a pathetic joke.
When players cared about the game.
That’s true
Hall of Fame? They are missing a GREAT opportunity
