I have one powering an R4 in my car so I thought it somehow got removed in newer years. To be fair though its in a spot people really dont look at unless you are crawling in the footwell.
Back in the early 90's I was a traveling salesman in the South. Car was a gray Volvo 145 station wagon. Was heading from Atlanta to Tennessee on I75 and in left lane running about 85. Radar detector went off when I was passing a red Pontiac Firebird was in center lane. I hit the brakes and the cop stopped the Pontiac. I just keep going. So YES color and car do matter!
With radar detectors you usually have to tune them otherwise you get a lot of false alerts. You can look online to find out which frequencies to tune out and then it’ll be accurate. For example, here in New York I only have certain KA frequencies and laser turned on, no K band.
Valentine seems to have an issue with picking up parking sensors on the front of the car. I borrowed my buddies uniden r8 recently and it's awesome. My other buddy has an r3 and it works pretty well. Definitely go with uniden

I found that uniden is by far the best at radar detectors and the tuneability of them. The amount of filtration you can do to get the desired outcome is awesome. Mine almost never goes off for false positives. The occasional confusion sometimes throws an MRCD code, but thats rare, and of course, the K-block feature seems to only work on cars prior to 2020 so maybe I need a firmware update, which I have never done.
I used to drive about 2,000 miles a week and went Uniden off independent testing. I have a video of a 4.5mi hit on a New Mexico trooper lol. Was moving in panhandle Texas about 110mph and started getting slowly increasing rear hits, probably a 1-1.5 miles away. Gave me the opportunity to dippity dip before he ever got line of sight. Just hated the actual physical build quality. Plastic didn't like 700+ mile days in Texas heat
CHP officers are pretty well trained and usually rather chill. It's the local PD that pops off. I am surprised the Turo guy you rented the cars from doesn't have front plates. That's another ticket in CA, and they will pull you over just for that.

"my radar works just as fast as your detector" does he not realize that radar bounces a lot? if he pinged any cars in front of the car with the detector it should easily pick it up.. if its good. and setup correctly.

Cobra was good... 10 years ago. They don't keep up with current frequencies, and are shit for blocking out basic radar. Like GPS years ago, you need to get updated stuff.
Cops are too advanced now to just run a detector. You have to pair it with something that has real time data like Waze. Radar detectors will not beat instant on or laser. Laser has to be stationary so everyone with live data knows where they are. With instant on you just have to be behind the car that they first check when you are in range. If I had to choose one I would pick Waze over a detector.
At the end of the interaction with the cop I think you could've been a bit nicer (but I mean who am I) because he cut you an easy ticket and he was cool. Just my opinion, kinda rude at the end 😆

Georgia troopers now run laser almost exclusively.

I believe the reason radar detectors have so many false alarms is because of the blind sport sensors in newer car’s mirrors
The nice thing with a lot of the new ones is you can go in on your phone and change the settings so they don’t alert to those
