History of "Dance of Yao People" Inspired by the folk songs of Yao people, Liu Tieshan composed Long Drum Dance of the Yao People during a visit to Youling village, Sanpai town, Liannan Yao Autonomous County, Qingyuan, northern Guangdong province, southern China in 1951. Mao Yuan, another composer, adapted this piece into an orchestral work in 1952. In the late 20th century, the song was used as the basis for several pop songs, in both China and the United States. The first 18 notes of the 1998 song "When You Believe," as recorded by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, are based on "Dance of the Yao People," although the Chinese composers of the original work were not credited.
What is crazy is not that the composer of Prince of Egypt (Hans Zimmer) used 瑶族舞曲, it is that he borrowed a CHINESE melody for an animation called Prince of EGYPT. If the movie was even remotely about China, it would have been fine.
"It was composed collaboratively by Liu Tieshan (刘铁山) and Mao Yuan (茅沅) in 1952, inspired by the long drum dance (瑶族长鼓舞歌), a form of traditional festival music of the Yao people of southern and southwest China. It was premiered in Beijing in 1953." "The first 18 notes of the 1998 song "When You Believe," as recorded by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, are based on "Dance of the Yao People," although the Chinese composers of the original work were not credited." - Wiki

Nice folk tune, with ethnic Chinese intonation. Ha, caught an issue - at the 3-minute mark, editing/splicing boo-boo, a note not in the composition I bet was there.
I still remember in the 80s when I was learning Erhu. My teacher used to play this song when I was so impressed that I try to imitate as a beginner. 8 years later, I joined a local Chinese Orchestra and have a chance to take part in playing (as Gaohu) the version you are hearing. I was so glad and thrilled. Thank you for the composer. You've inspired me for my interests in Chinese music for the past 25 years.
The orchestra really brought out the spirit of the song, though it was played slower than the version our school played. AHHH when can we ever play the song so well? *_*
"oh my god the first part of this song is also the first 18 notes of the song When You Believe by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston and???who copied????hahahaha
@m00nk00ki3, We should say the reverse, 'Prince of Egypt' is a lot like this song. This is because when this song was composed, many other nations are still wearing banana leaves covering their body..
One of the song i love best in Chinese Orchestra~ Had the conductor score and it's really a good arrangement.. Heeez.. Can hear the Sheng very clearly during their solo too~~ ^-^/

Heeey! The Prince of Egypt stole this masterpiece and I love this so much more! Thank you so much China!

As a Chinese girl who has studied guzheng for five years,I'm really proud of our instruments and music.
The song was created in 1952 first time. and you can check it.

( th-cam.com/video/OxHNyZs1gvI/w-d-xo.html )
Correct the first time I heard this was on the Commodore 64 back in 1985 and it is brilliant the original music is from 1952 just a great tune
One of the most beautiful, emotional songs ever composed!
Hearing this makes me cry with happiness. Beautifully well done!
2:14 & 5:50 *_The Way of the Exploding Fist_* (C=64)

"When You Believe" 's Original version
I can see a Chinese ballerina on stage dancing to this. With her fan it's beautiful music
Nice folk tune, with ethnic Chinese intonation. Ha, caught an issue - at the 3-minute mark, editing/splicing boo-boo, a note not in the composition I bet was there.

Wonderfully conducted.
Touching, dynamics wise and skill...what else can one expect from a national level orchestra.
The conductor is very confident and the music is great.

The orchestra really brought out the spirit of the song, though it was played slower than the version our school played.

The rthymn is so beautiful. It makes me feel landing in a fairy land.

it is originally composed for the symphony orchestra, but of course there are many other versions of it arranged for different instruments.
So serene & calming can imagine almost anything!
I really love it!
OOOOOOOOOO BELLISIMO SUUUUUUUUUPER HERMOSO
@Lyunz93 it's called 革胡(Gé hú)
some professional band will use this intrument, others will use Cello instead
@Lyunz93 its a laruan, most orchestra uses cello, thats why its not commonly known.

Fantastic and awesome moments to relax with the good music for our ears
@godwatelsecani
Beautiful
Wow! This is really great! Even their conductor conducts with much style!
"oh my god the first part of this song is also the first 18 notes of the song When You Believe by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston

thank you uploading this beautiful music.
Yes i agree with you. However, it's not composed for the Chinese orchestra originally, but for the symphony orchestra.
The laruan is like a substitute for the cello, used in some Chinese orchestras. You can see a few of them in this video.
SPECTACULAR!
